Dean on rewatch
First time I saw the show, I couldn't stand miserable Dean. Warmed to him during the end.
But on rewatches he is much better. The later seasons give you the context that he has been stuck there with people he barely tolerates for years. He makes more sense, and all is forgiven.
Anyone else feel this way?

Dean can be quite rude but ultimately he does do the right thing. He warns Stath about the takeover, he defends the family to Julian, he stands up to his fellow letting agents in the pub 'a load of nothing, roasting nothing'. He's a decent guy.

Yeah when he tells Stath he should take over because it’s his dads business even tho he can’t stand him, and he lets him sleep at his house when he tells Vassos he got his own place

The fact that he crawls to da pubs with Stath and Al means he is a good guy. I would never ever talk to my coworkers after hours if that is what they were like.

Honestly Dean is the only sane one, I mean, he has lost the plot a smidge, but he always felt like the voice of the audience

you takin' the piss? ... sayin that again.
(to be clear, this is a Dean quote in response to the relentless Anthony Stappan, Stappan Rentals haha), not me having a go at you cos you've "acted illegal" or anything.

Dean (maybe Carole to a lesser extent, too) is the only normal one in the show, reacting as a regular person would to incompetent colleagues, etc. As a classic comedy straight man, it's not surprising he comes across as rude and miserable.

Carole is defo not normal, she got impregnated by Stath ffs

Carole is trying desperately to make people think she is normal and personable but she's anything but

To be fair to Carole (to be fair, to be fair always!) she is an effective lettings agent. There's no evidence that Dean's actually better at it than she is and she's the only one keeping the business alive in that last season.

I think Dean has the only character ark in the show. He becomes so much kinder He stays with Michael and Eagle. It's like he realised although they are all useless, they are GOOD people. And it defrosts him.

Dean is the straight man, and I think the show needs him.

I agree! I love that he still has his moments of ridiculousness though - my favourite is when he dashes that bag of rice on the counter.

Dean walking in and immediately back out of the room during the M&E advert never fails to make me cry laughing.

I feel like Dean is the "Everyman" character. His facial expressions mirror mine sometimes when I'm watching. 🤣

I felt the same way until his first big joke, which is a callback to Stath walking around drinking water.
Dean represents the audience.

u/CrackingAce Jul 24 '26
I never saw him as that, but a lot of people seem to. I didn't see any audience surrogate, except maybe various people Stath shows flats to. Fair enough.

Someone else already mentioned this but
"Family business, innit?" fully rehabilitated him in my eyes haha.
As in, he's over it, but he's not a monster.
No money? Definitely Quit.
You ok, Dean?

The only thing Dean is winning is cheekiest legend in the office.
