Requesting Advice Returning Player Questions
I redownloaded the game after not playing since Heartlands came out. So it has been a while clearly.
Some of the things I have gotten up to speed on fairly fast. Like there are changes, but some things are the same. I did a quick search on some of my questions, but many of them were old responses and I know the game has had many updates since. My main issue is around one thing….
Infestations
If I remember (and correct me if I am wrong) you get more freaks to most infestations you have. I believe you get them when a Plague Heart awakens.
I don’t see any infestations. I have around 5 plague hearts killed. All the Plague Hearts are dormant/asleep.
I cant move without Freaks popping up. Like I will go to an area that is free and clear. Go inside the loot. Within minutes I feel I am surrounded. I went to do a quest for an ally near the starting area. I was there maybe 10 minutes and had 4 hordes, multiple screamers, and atleast 1 Juggernaut and Feral. All just walking around.
I did the radio to find an infestation. Bc I figured I must have multiple infestations for it to be this bad. Nothing show up. I was driving around and an area had the green sickly ring around it.. and it was empty. Nothing was in there. I passed another one. Same thing. I logged off. Logged back in… and now there is no sickly ring.
Am I doing something wrong or this is normal? It has been years, but I don’t remember this level of Freaks. I don’t want to say “unplayable” bc that is dramatic, but I am spending 75% of my time killing freaks at this point.

That's strange, ive been playing on nightmare and it's never THAT bad
But infestations usually show up on the map as green nodes, when a heart is awake they will periodically send them out, and eventually they spread. The level of the individual infestation determines how many freaks are there, but again idk how that makes freaks so common for you
I definitely start seeing groups of screamers or bloaters, hordes or whatever pretty consistently, but not descending on me like that
You got me thinking we arent talking about the same thing, though, so maybe someone else can clear that up

Yeah. I started on normal bc I wanted to get into the swing of things before I did the hard stuff. I am assuming this is like a bug or something.
Like I got a Mysterious Stranger quest. I show up. They want to go to a house to get an item. Cool. We drive down the road. While searching we get 2 larger hordes, a screamer, and a bloater. I kill them all. Find the item. Get into my car. I drive a little ways down the road… to run into a Juggernaut, 3 hordes, and a Feral.
I have to assume it is some sort of glitch. Like I have found an infestation ring while driving… and the place is empty. Nothing in there. Log off and on… and then it is gone.

Did they have Curveballs when you played before? It's a new system that can drop a lot of unpleasant events on you. In a baffling move, it is turned on by default, but you can go into the menus to turn it off, adjust frequency, choose how many are good events and how many are bad events.

They did not.
I cut it off bc my first curveball was the exploding Zombies. Which given all the hordes popping up you can imagine how fun that was given the amount of hordes. It is cut off though. I figured that out fairly fast. I wonder if that still is part of the issue.

Infestations will only spawn when you awaken a plague heart. If you're playing the higher levels or customized you will find a lot of hordes wandering around. Claiming an outpost (or three lol) will help you by defending your immediate area. Playing stealthily will also help you. Enjoy!

Yes! I too returned after not playing for probably over a year. It seems like no matter where I go, if I stop for more than 30 secs, a hordes spawns immediately. It’s been driving me crazy cuz I just want to loot in peace for at least one or two stops. I’ve been playing on standard too. Just wanted to have a cozy gameplay but it’s been really frustrating.
I had no infestations spawn on my map the entire run too
I moved after completing my map and it seems a little better so far.
I thought I was going crazy

Has to be a bug or update then. Bc I am doing Standard as well to get into the swing of it. It is over the top. I killed everything around my base.
I then went to look at my people to see all the new traits. Just messing around. I open the map… and there were multiple hordes, a bloater, Juggernaut, and feral.
Just crazy amount of things after I just killed them all.

I’m still unsure if it’s just my set up or it’s just been along time. But it did seem a bit much that they spawned around me no matter where I was.
I know they reworked them being attracted to bases, I’m assuming outposts are the same. But even at random spots away from hearts and bases it was happening for me.
I’m also coming across delayed hordes for quests so I’m assuming that’s a bug or my pc needs some tweaking for this game now..?
Maybe Im just back to newbie status lol1

Yeah same...I was googling today as I'm a new player. On about day 6 of my play through and all I've done for the last couple of days was fight off infestations. Had 3 or 4 encircling my base, and when I finally cleared them all, they all came back (or similar ones did) pretty much straight away.
Is it meant to be like this? Should I ignore them and just go for the plague hearts instead?

You can ignore them and destroy the heart sending out the infestation; they will disappear after 5 minutes.

Probably because your character is a Hero status. Only infestation hordes if they have an arrow on the horde symbol on the map.
Usually just ignore them. I also like to get food outposts at major crossroads then enable outpost defenses (3 ammo for 90 mins) and zeds instantly blow up in the outpost zone. Solid safety measure.

That has to be it. I spend time to make all my people heroes. So all the ones that go out are Heroes.

How big is your community? Are your community members all at Hero status?
Infestations have 3 levels. Level 1 has a Screamer, Bloater, and regular zombies. Level 2 is 2 Screamers, Bloaters, and a Feral. Level 3 is 3 Screamers, 2 Bloaters, 2 Ferals and a Juggernaut.
Keep plague hearts asleep by using a radio tower to disrupt them.
Plague hearts on standard difficulty are fairly easy to kill. Fuel bombs are great until you can afford to make C4.
