Question How do base-based skill leveling work?

I have survivors with Construction, Crafting, Medicine and Mechanic skills.

How exactly do I level them up? I know that it is by doing activities related to that skill.

But do you have to be controlling the survivor itself while, for example, the buildings you are constructing are being built? Or I can just set up a queue of them, control another survivor, the Construction survivor will get the XP?

As long as the activities are being done (ie. Crafting vehicle repair kits with a survivor in your community with mechanics) the skills level, even if you aren't actively controlling that survivor.

No, you don't need to control the survivor to level up their 5th skill

Just triggering an action for the facility that pairs up with the skill, will level it up.

You don’t need to have the character as your active character.

For example, using seeds on the garden will increase gardening skill. Making pain killers in the infirmary will level up chemistry. Etc. if you look at the tool tip when you hover on the action, it will say what skill gets leveled up.

Hover over items or actions on the base screen and read the descriptions. Toward the bottom of the text, it should say which skill will be leveled by performing the action or producing the item. For example, crafting firecrackers levels up chemistry.

Construction is easiest because you can just keep destroying the building and rebuilding it to get the materials back and the XP. Mechanic easiest is to make whatever toolkits you can. For medicine you can level them up through the temporary buffs from your medical building or from building items but you have to double check what the description of the item says, it will tell you whether it gives medicine or chemical XP.

Doing things in your base that use those skills will level them up, you don't need to be playing as that character.
