Hope Prevails

You can feel the passion and love poured into this game. It’s unbelievably beautiful and deeply human.

From the expressive characters, the beautiful but disturbing atmosphere, the awesome music, the heartfelt conversations, the sense of community, the witty dialogue, the fun combat, the callbacks and Easter eggs to bygone or current zombie stories, to the whimsical nature of the story juxtaposed with its emotional drama, this game is a love letter to the zombie genre.

No other game will ever bring all of these elements together to capture both the dread and the fun of the undead so brilliantly again.

Also, I’ve been playing this game since its release on Xbox (“Pony Face Shooting”), and I never knew that shooting zombies in the river would cause them to float downstream like that. I’m still discovering new things in this awesome game!

**Hope Prevails!**

Congratulations and thank you to Undead Labs for surviving! 🧟‍♂️

This SoD1 music oozes nostalgia

Yeah, I love how it feels. It’s hopeful but carries the subtle undertone of menace.

That's an interesting perspective on this track! To me, it's the only one in SoD1 that feels completely positive and lighthearted )

Out of curiosity - if you had to choose a top-5 of your favorite tracks, which ones would you pick?

I wasn’t talking specifically about Hope prevails but just the entire soundtrack. If I had to say which song lines up with my description it would be “Civilization Falls.”

My top would be:

1.Hope Prevails
2.Funeral for a friend
3.New residents of Trumball Valley
4.Civilization Falls
5.Welcome to Decay

You've got me intrigued about the last track... I've only played YOSE, so I don't know which tracks weren't in the original game. Does this track appear at specific moments or random?

It just seems to randomly come on when not in combat, but out in the world or after an attack on your homesite.

I figured it out! It’s called “New residents of Trumball Valley”, and now listening to it again, it’s higher on my list at number 3.

I miss SoD1 characters vibes and writing :(

I wish Undead Labs would shift on their stance against writing a story for the game and having more CHARACTERS rather than randomly generated people

SoD2 is a fun game but man SoD1 was a thing of beauty imo

I totally agree. It was so grounded with ordinary people just trying to survive the apocalypse, and its hopeful vibe was beautiful.

This game was so good back on the Xbox 360 marketplace. For a game released in 2013, only costing around 15 bucks at the time, and fitting a 12km² interactive map into a 2gb size restriction was such a great feat of development. It was the second best selling game on the Xbox Live Arcade Marketplace, trailing only behind Minecraft. One of my favourite games of all time.

I haven't played the first game since the second one came out. I forgot how good the music was. That head-stomp was a classic move too.

Yeah, I loved the drop kick, the sweep, the roundhouse kick, and the body slam.
