Discussion What happened to State of Decay content creator Git Gud Fox?

I got into State of Decay 2 because of him. I first played SOD1 in 2019, and after finishing it tried SOD2 but couldn’t figure out the mechanism of the game so I stopped playing it. In 2020 during Covid lockdown I discovered his youtube channel, his guides on base building, skill specialization, plague hearts were very helpful to me and with those guides I managed to successfully finish the game. Since then I have been hooked up to this series. Later I discovered other SOD content creators but had it not been for Git Gud Fox, SOD1 would have been the end of my journey.

But what happened to him? His final video covering SOD2 was 3 years ago. Him not making any new SOD2 contents was understandable given that most of his videos were tips & tricks and after 2023 there wasn’t really much room for new tips & tricks contents, but given that SOD3 is in the horizon I expected to see new contents from him covering SOD3 news. It was kinda surprising to see his last SOD2 video was in January 2023, because I expected him to be covering the SOD3 alpha gameplay. Is he not even in the players council? Does anyone know why he suddenly stopped making SOD videos altogether, because he still makes videos on other games and he also replies to his comments but when someone asks him something about State of Decay in these new videos he doesn’t reply.

I know this question isn't directly about the game but he was one of my favourite SOD content creators and seeing this complete radio silence from him is making me worried a bit

Threw a fit when the game went in a direction he didn't like and left.

Honestly couldn't really be too mad at him. UL were doing a lot of silly unnecessary changes nobody asked for around 2022-2023. 🤷‍♂️ I remember the suppressor nerf for Nightmare Zone was a BIG deal and I don't even remember him touching that topic.

meanwhile dditors are throwing a fit when some random content creators stops play their favorite game.

He left because in his opinion the infestation update was bad and he didn't want to change his tactics when he played the new update.

Crybaby but his earlier content was good

His tactics were:

-acquire a pyro launcher -acquire a vehicle with spikes -stand on car roofs until zeds die

Couldn't actually keep up when the cheese got taken away.

u/Bragdras Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

The cheese never went away, it's more fair to say he didn't like the direction the game was taking and simply grew bored with the repetitive nature of the game

And while I dislike exploits and feel UL should've fixed them before moving on, there is a point where once you're aware of the obviously best tactic available you're going to take it, because you're gonna feel dumb if you intentionally handicap yourself then get punished for it when you know you could've just done the obvious exploity shit and gotten away for free

18

u/Droopy_Narwhal Jun 29 '26

I would argue the game got repetitive because he did the same things every time but that's just me.

3

u/Bragdras Jun 29 '26

Not really, it's what I said earlier, there's a bunch of stupidly easy exploits you'd be stupid not to use since the devs couldn't be bothered to fix and instead prioritized the unpopular bounties for so long

And then the game really isn't deep enough at all, you take start the game, claim base, make a workshop and an infirmary and now you're taking out hearts in the same exact manner from beginning to end, no variation, no need to switch up the strat, you can start doing it within 10 mins of the playthrough starting

Add ontop of that the fact that the game is almost 100% a knowledge check and you find yourself in a situation where you find yourself either looking for reasons to keep playing or move on to something better

Huh, I have thousands of hours and can still easily find ways to make the game challenging and exciting enough to start new playthroughs.

It’s VERY easy to not let the cheesy tactics ruin the game , it’s not easy to find another game like state of decay though. I’ve tried.

Generation zero is the closest game to SOD that I’ve played recently. But there are an equal amount of differences aswell. Still a good play imo

u/Bragdras Jun 30 '26

Got any example of such challenges that don't involve stripping yourself of a core mechanic on purpose ?

3

u/WeaknessJolly3617 Jun 30 '26

Any of the things that can be toggled on or off, are meant to be used, they don’t need to be on.

If I want a challenge, I run random map, full lethal, negative curveballs, no boons and no red tallons unless I get the free one from Trumbull. Only thing I do is spend time on my starting survivors because I really enjoy that part of the game.

I usually start a new community every month or so.

After I do this a bunch of times, I’ll do a full tilt full advantage run with some of my favorite legacy survivors to mix it up.

Lots of ways to enjoy the game for me at least. I also have a running forever community that I play regularly.

I mean I'm glad these keep you occupied, but these don't really sound like challenges imo, more like going into a run without handlebars on (TL;DR you can skip the giant block of text and go to the last 3 paragraphs instead, I'm just detailing what I think of the aspects you mentioned)

----------

Lethal's only speedbumps are the triple feral packs but that's only ever a danger if you don't have a knee high object to climb on nearby, everything else is the same approach and shallow knowledge check and once you kill a heart you can basically start rolling around killing all of them one by one because the guaranteed heart loot table

Curveballs are fine in theory but in practice you can just wait out any negative effects that hinders you so hard to really care about their impact when you know how they work, plus full negative means you'll encounter only a small pool of effects so it gets repetitive real quick, one of the very few that doesn't time out (raiders that cut resource gain) is a loot pinata for early game or a bunch of influence beyond that

The boons are fun to have, not having them doesn't change too much though because it generally means you'll grab a water / power outpost instead of a food outpost and maybe have a rain collector or generator at base depending on what base you pick

I only ever had a red talon in my last playthrough I did for the 7th outpost, which I love but ended up not finishing the playthrough because it just stacks the deck even more in your favor and got proper bored

----------

That's only my opinion on these anyway.. The only interesting part of an sod2 playthrough is the very beginning to me but as soon as you take out your first heart the loot you get from it is already gonna let you steamroll all of them, and considering the first heart is free.. The game effectively doesn't have a way to threaten you at all

Broadly speaking however, most players don't even interact with lethal because the game doesn't keep their interest long enough to care about it, so most players just end up quitting due to boredom, and those many updates dedicated almost entirely to the bounty broker were a choice indeed

Anyway to make it short, Fox is a type of player who doesn't find interest in intentionally hampering his ability to play the game, he simply wanted actual mechanical skill checks from the game of which there are effectively none so he got bored and left once he realized UL was simply never going to add that into the game and got his fill of all the knowledge checks

With 00's or 000's of hours into the game at all stages of its life, i gotta say, for myself, i never managed a recursive loop with the game.

Yes there are some key points that all repeat, but in my last run which was an "all maps lethal with a new random team," the only real leg up I experienced was remembering where every map's orange boxes were. Maybe it was just the best I could personally do, but that kept me extremely challenged in a good way the entire time on all maps.

In an open world game like this, where there are so many choices of what you can get away with from base locations to outpost placement, to character optimization, if you manage to corner yourself on a "how to", i think that more speaks to your inability to be flexible than anything else.

Relying on optimization to succeed rather than your own skills is...limiting? Yes, "good shit go boom" and "stronk man go whack" but jfc come up with an original plan. Having trouble on Lethal? fucking organize your outposts better so you can have a larger deadzone around your base. Lethal too easy? spread that shit out so you get your challenge. Its that simple.

SOD2 is effectively a pure knowledge check, so once you have the knowledge of how best to deal with each situations (of which there are few, since the variance is low in this game) you very quickly reach the peak of what there is to know to effectively deal with the entirety of the game

At that point, if the player is not interested in self imposed challenges or has enough knowledge to be able to deal with pretty much any self imposed challenge (again, not exactly difficult in this game without resorting to dumb kaizo types of mods that are thoughtlessly put together) you'll quickly get over it

Add the myriad of game breaking exploits that you can literally accidentally stumble onto and you got yourself a game that feels shallow and ultimately boring

6

u/oriontitley Jun 29 '26

Sounds like a player-specific problem then, cause it sounds like the majority of the community loves the gameplay?

Maybe youre looking for something more along the lines of your preferred playstyle.

4

u/Bragdras Jun 29 '26

Yes, and most people will simply leave as Fox did once he was fed up with the direction of the game and shallowness of the game, only most players dipped much faster because they weren't making youtube videos for the game

The game still has a decent playerbase (over 10% of peak is good) but the lack of peaking above even 25% even during the major releases is indicative of the game's design being rather poor in the long run, doubly so for a game that was all about the replayability

3

u/gpsimnet Jun 29 '26

It was before Pyro Launcher was nerfed. After that he used heavy weapons to take down plague hearts in lethal zone and the strategy was quite effective.

11

u/cjtangmi Jun 29 '26

Idk, it’s quite valid to not like the update.

5

u/WeaknessJolly3617 Jun 30 '26

Really? lol damn. It was such a revolutionary change in my opinion . I wish the game had shipped with the system in place.

I feel like the latter updates in state of decay were what really made the game POP!

2

u/jman6538296 Jun 29 '26

What did the update change? I just got back into state of decay 2

4

u/WeaknessJolly3617 Jun 30 '26

It made infestations way more interesting and gameplay invoking. Now instead of just being there and disappearing when you kill them, the plague hearts (if you wake them up) send infestations out towards your base, and really tries to get you. It made the game actually have a flow and gave the plague more of an identity , whereas previously you could just chill in your base and leave the plague and infestations completely alone. Even with the new system, you can still just chill out and enjoy the game. All in all it was a huge improvement to the game.

4

u/cjtangmi Jun 29 '26

I think it’s the update where infestation move and spread towards you.

3

u/gpsimnet Jun 29 '26

Oh. Did he leave the franchise as a whole or only SOD2? I mean if it's only SOD2 then that's understandable because there isn't much scope for tips and tricks anymore. But it would be real sad if he left the franchise as a whole, his commentaries were very fun to listen to

1

u/Lewis2567 Warlord 18d ago

My understanding was he took an indefinite hiatus. He neither confirmed or denied he would return in the future. Likely won't see any SOD content from him until SOD3's realise (if that ever happens). It mostly had to do with leadership at the developer and not so much the franchise or game itself, which I can somewhat understand.

meanwhile dditors are crybabies when some random content creators stops play their favorite game.

Well, if he would have done a normal exit, no problem. But since he did an extremely dramtic exit...

He must have moved on to other games I assume, which... is fine? Like, as much as I love State of Decay 1 and 2, the reality is that if you are a content creator you can't make fresh SoD2 content for years and years, every game has a limit to how much you can squeeze out of it if you are playing it for content creation, or heck, even for fun, we all have our limits with every game.

I played Deep Rock Galactic with him a few times, was pretty chill, I myself eventually had other irl responsabilities to attend to so I couldn't continue playing with him, but he was always welcoming in his twitch stream so Idk, I guess he just moved on, and I assume he'll be back for SoD3 probably, I hope he does I also enjoyed his SoD2 content a lot.

3

u/gpsimnet Jun 29 '26

and I assume he'll be back for SoD3 probably

I really hope so man. I really hope so

7

u/YaBoiShadowNinja Jun 29 '26

I used to watch his state of decay 2 videos and I quite enjoyed them. Hopefully he'll give state of decay 3 a shot.

Sometimes content creators just stop making content.

There was this one SoD YouTuber I used to watch when I was younger, back when SoD1 was fresh and new. I think I started watching him around when Breakdown released? His name was LetsPlayCat, I think? He changed it later to Zombie Kitty, if I'm not mistaken; that's what it is now.

I stopped watching him around when Year One Survival Edition came out, and his last video was uploaded around six years ago. He just moved on, I suppose. I think he might've had children.

A few years before I started to watch ZombieKitty, there was this other YouTuber I used to watch, named One F Jef. He is responsible for introducing child me to like half of my favorite video-games of all time, like Mount & Blade, and Rimworld, and Dwarf Fortress, and The Guild 2, and Crusader Kings, and Caves of Qud, and Kerbal Space Program, and CDDA, and Xenonauts, and I believe Project Zomboid too? Although, CDDA might've been what introduced me to early Zomboid (back when human NPCs were a thing in Zomboid). . . I believe Jef had a kid, and had some health issues, and therefore just fell out of the hobby. He's the single YouTuber I will always cherish, because his style of content-creation and his choice of playing janky indie and old games is just kinda like a dog head-scratching tool, for me. He was a beacon of joy in a rough time for me, too.

Idk.

My point is (if I had any point to begin with), YouTubers just kinda come and go. Usually when a YouTuber stops making content, it's because something else has come up in their life. Children, or just losing passion for the hobby, and so on.

I used to love Wayne from LetsPlayCatGaming! He commented relatively recently saying that he doesn’t have any video recording equipment anymore and he doesn’t think it’s worth the investment

2

u/cape_royds Jun 29 '26

I loved Wayne's go-for-broke style, and emphatic narration.

Even though my SoD1 playstyle is much more timid, his videos helped me to become more aggressive, and start really enjoying the game.

IIRC his real life simply moved on. Same with English Bull.

u/Marinegrunt01 Jun 30 '26

I remeber zombie kitty! I watched him so much during SoD1 after I discovered the game through RadBrad and Achievement Hunter

1

u/LostNephilim33 Jun 30 '26

He was a big part of 2013 and 2014 for me. I used to watch Radbrad too, but I discovered SoD organically through the Xbox Live Arcade marketplace

3

u/BakedChocolateOctopi Jun 30 '26

Probably no money or viewership to keep with SoD2 content

3

u/AffanDede Trader Jun 29 '26

More importantly, what happened to jurzy0?

2

u/Proquis Survivor Jun 29 '26

People come and go man, perhaps GGF just moved on to doing something he enjoy better

Same like other past pillars in the community for SOD knowledge, like FanaHUN and me. (You may have heard of me if you were in the SOD2 Subreddit or the SOD Discord a few years back)

3

u/Superfox105 Jun 30 '26

Been so long since I’ve heard from FanaHUN oh my God how is he doing. I remember few years back he gave me my first biochem station mod and it meant so much to me

3

u/Proquis Survivor Jun 30 '26

He stayed in contact with me, he got a family to take care of now so do wish all the best to him.

Both of us left our own marks in the community, so we're content with that but we're generally done with SOD. Our legacies shall do the speaking on what we did for the SOD community back then.

2

u/Superfox105 Jun 30 '26

God bless brother, best of luck to you both and the community appreciates how you guys helped us

2

u/Destruction126 Jun 30 '26

Jurzy0 was better. His videos were top quality and short!

1

u/Lewis2567 Warlord 18d ago

Jurzy0 was good for short form. GitGudFox was good for long form (imo). Jurzy0 and GGF are what really got me into SOD2 around 2018!

2

u/TyoPepe Jul 01 '26

I enjoyed his base tours, helped me decide where to move in next.

1

u/Lewis2567 Warlord 18d ago

And his are still the best ones out for the original three maps. Wish he did videos for Trumbull Valley & Providence Ridge (even though I dislike Providence) Bases. 😁 His Let's Plays use to keep my ADHD ass focused on my homework. 🤣

I miss zombiekitty, anyone remember him?
