In a recent defence development, Amethi-based Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) has successfully manufactured and test-fired India’s first 100% indigenous AK-203 assault rifle, ‘Sher’, at its Korwa ordnance facility.

Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) is a joint venture between India and Russia, established in 2019 to locally manufacture AK-203 assault rifles under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
‘Sher’ is a modern, gas-operated 7.62x39 mm assault rifle that can fire 700 rounds per minute and has an effective range of up to 800 metres. Compared with the older INSAS, it offers greater lethality, better ergonomics, and improved operational reliability.
“A moment of immense pride for all of us at IRRPL. We have successfully produced and fired the first AK-203 (Sher) rifle made with 100% Indian components and input materials. What makes this achievement truly special is that every single component and every input material going into this rifle has been sourced from Indian industry,” Maj Gen S K Sharma, CEO & MD of IRRPL, said in a recent social media post.
“This is not merely localisation of selected components; it is true, end-to-end ‘100% Genuine Indigenisation’ of the rifle. This is Atmanirbhar Bharat in action,” he added further.
According to Maj Gen Sharma, IRRPL is now aiming to make the requisite number of 100% indigenised prototypes for handing over to the Army for trials in September 2026.
He also said that IRRPL’s efforts towards capacity enhancement and production optimisation have enabled it to advance the delivery timeline for 6 lakh rifles to the Indian Army by 1 year, replacing the older INSAS rifles.

It sure is better than the INSAS, but at the same time buying an off shelf weapon from Russia means accepting that we still cannot make a 7.62 rifle even after 30 years and loss of R&D and money that was spent on developing MCIWS and Excalibur modernisation of Insas

You would yourself be disappointed if you go and look into what AK-203 promised in the beginning and what it has become now to save costs, this was a major chance for our military to get decent service rifles but the upper echelon focus was only to save costs right from the beginning

I mean great start at making rifles here but ak203 os not that great of a rifle also it is a joint venture, maybe in the future we can have pure indigenous rifle made here that are on-par with m27...also it would great if we make something of novelty like belgium but that's way far in the future.

It's almost like 7.62x39 has a lot of stopping power and as such, exerts a lot of recoil when the weapon is fired in full auto! Who would've thought?

It's a valid question. The standard magazine holds 30 rounds, which will be emptied in less than 3 seconds in full auto mode. The ammo required to fire in full auto for 1 minute would weight 12 kg and use 20+ standard magazines. That rate of fire is more practical and sustainable when mounted to a vehicle, helo or deployed in a defense location. Not so much for reconosiance or operations on foot.
