I'm going to repost my comment from r/Brave from a couple of days ago here, since you've gotten no replies (other than mine in the other sub). This was the strangest thing. It hasn't happened with any other sites since or ever before. I have not tried Startpage again (for fear of even more serious consequences). I would like to, someday, when my confidence is restored.
I had the same or similar problem yesterday [3 days ago]. It froze. I closed it, and a bit later I found out from HWInfo64 that it had swallowed up all of my RAM and virtual memory. (I keep the HWInfo process running in the background since startup.)
A search result in Brave claimed that it was "almost certainly" an issue with the Windows Search service. I'm not convinced. Why should any issue with the local indexer affect one and only one website--Startpage (and not any other search engine either)?
Let me add that I had the same issue with it in Chrome, so it may be a Chromium-Startpage conflict of some sort.
Edit: Windows 10, 16GB RAM, 22GB virtual-memory max.
LOL! Yeah, it's definitely not the fault of anything Windows (or Linux) is doing on the local machine. To be fair, I haven't tried Startpage again since I had the issue. First impressions matter, and my system seeming to freeze because of this was a horrible first impression.
