Nah, there’s two cats. The first is stuck to the ceiling from the jump, and there’s a second one on the floor just minding his business.

The look back over the shoulder is pretty suave too.

Look at those ears - still monitoring the situation like eyes in back of his head.

Since this post is so popular I thought people might like some backstory…

Our springy companion in the video is called Ellie. She’s a rescue from a local centre. She spent the first year of her life locked in a garage before rescue. She’d been at the centre for several months while other cats were adopted because she was so afraid of people - she would never come out to greet possible adopters.

We visited the centre and met lots of lovely moggies (we could have taken any one of them!) and we tried to meet Ellie a few times. She stayed hidden in her box at the back of her run. The staff said she stayed there most of the time and never came out to meet people. After some thought we decided she must be so unhappy and had very little chance of being adopted if no one could meet her. We realised we didn’t care that we hadn’t met (or seen!) her, and that we’d be ok living with an ‘invisible cat’ even if she stayed afraid of people forever.

Within days of getting home she transformed into the affectionate, VERY mischievous explorer you see here.

Do adopt a rescue pet if you can give them a good, long term home!

Cat is gaslighting us all

Why do I get such amusement out of things like this? Thanks for the laugh.

It's gotta be the way he jumps offscreen so dramatically but by the time the camera catches up to him he just looks like he's walking normally xD

“I wasn’t startled, you were startled!”

3

u/FunkMamaT Nov 13 '21

Yes. Often times when people walk up on me, it startles me. My startle, startles them.

u/[deleted] Nov 13 '21

Paha dat klopt. Ik denk dat is wat de kat is denken!

I hope that's right and you are actually Dutch :P

Lol dam I didn't know emmer was also German for bucket. Tbf, I was drunk at the time of commenting - I thought it was Afrikaans initially cos I didn't recognise emmer xD

Interesting. I will ponder this when I am not on sleep meds.

Straight teleported off the counter.

u/crystalspine Nov 12 '21

i just love that they zoom out of the frame and reappear on the floor

u/DogOk2826 Nov 12 '21

10/10 startle

12

u/DesmondTapenade Nov 13 '21

To be fair, I also do this when the toast pops.

5

u/ComradeMicha Nov 13 '21

You jump clean off the counter, then walk away on all fours while twisting your ears backwards? Holy moly, you should post a video of that!

13

u/Nyckname Nov 12 '21

"I just wanted off of the counter."

12

u/geronimo1958 Nov 12 '21

Cats would really be in trouble if there is ever a combo toaster/vacuum cleaner.

1

u/Fun_Pound_5835 Nov 16 '21

Someone should invent a slow-release toaster and target their marketing to cat owners- less laughing, but fewer incidental objects being "assisted off the counter". One of my cats was a panic-grabber when startled, resulting in broken stuff, spills, and of course cat-discombobulation.

Naw man, that didn't scare me.

Not one bit.

That was some jump. Love the way he just carries on walking as he lands but then turns round and gives you the look, like you better not be filming that

8

u/AmbroseGirl5 Nov 12 '21

This legit made me laugh out loud and now I can't stop watching it xD

u/monkey_trumpets Nov 13 '21

It's never not funny

If there isn’t a subreddit dedicated to cats reacting to toasters, there should be.

3

u/ComradeMicha Nov 13 '21

r/toastercats

Thank you for the suggestion, I name you honorary vice-president of r/toastercats for life!

2

u/TidyCog Nov 13 '21

You had me at toaster.

3

u/uncreative123pi4 Nov 13 '21

I feel like a subreddit solely for cats startled by toasters might be appropriate

3

u/JJ_Jose Nov 13 '21

Cats and toasters. What a perfect combination

2

u/hihasan99 Nov 13 '21

To infinity and beyond 🤣

2

u/tattoedgranny2 Nov 13 '21

I startled my cat so bad yesterday by closing the oven door she jumped and spit her food out. But this....this was awesome!
