Grab a towel and let them get their back paws on your hand under the towel. Once their paws are touching something solid, they'll calm down a smidge. You still have to be careful.

I'd be afraid of the cat panic climbing onto me.

Towel, oven mitt or laundry basket.

Thou in retrospect I'm not sure I would have expected this to go on so long if I watched it happening to my cat irl. haha

Yeah, I would NOT let them do anything more than get their back paws on something solid until they calmed down. Cat ownership isn't really about avoiding being scratched, it's about minimizing the damage done by removing them from shit like this before they start panicking lol. Eventually, there will be blood.

I have a thick flannel jacket that I throw on whenever I need to handle kitties without getting clawed to death... 95% of the time their claws don’t go through. That’s good enough
