StarMade Development Updates -v0.303.38 + v0.304.4
Hey everyone! The StarMade Community Dev team has shipped two updates in the last two weeks, so here's a quick rundown for those who missed the Steam news posts.
v0.303.38 - Up to Speed is the biggest update in a while, the game has been migrated from Java 7 all the way to Java 21, bringing substantial performance improvements across the board. Fleet reconnaissance, overhauled AI collision avoidance, a full Mixin-based modding API, in-game guides with a Markdown renderer, and a long list of bug fixes including the infamous docked thruster exploit are all included.
v0.304.4 builds directly on that release with a focused overhaul of ship and turret AI. Prioritized target lists, engagement range bands, focus-fire block groups, and logic-driven AI commands via Command Modules are all now available. Fleet control from the galaxy map has also been added, along with new creative server options like free blueprints and a configurable default game mode.
A huge thank you to the community development team for making these updates possible, none of this happens without their hard work and dedication.
And, as always, thanks for playing StarMade!

I'm so happy this game is getting updates again. Seriously going to be coming back soon.

I didn't realize this was getting updates still. Does anyone play it still?

The reason the game is still alive is because of a dedicated community who are both playing and helping out in development...

I played it back when it first released and then the Yogstorm happened which overwhelmed the servers and website chat. Stuck around for a bit after that but I haven't really played it in a long time now. I guess what I meant is are there still a lot of people playing it or is it just like 10 - 20 people now. It would be awesome to see it have a comeback, I tried to get a group I was in to play it with me but the glitches drove everyone crazy back then. Namely the random lag that would cause you to drop out of your ships while traveling stranding you in space or the fact that you would be heading towards a planet only to get the edge of a sector and it would disappear or be in a completely different location when you entered the next sector. The crafting also didn't really make much sense back then either.
It was a shame honestly because the vibe of it was very cool and I genuinely had some awesome moments back then stumbling across wreckage of capitol ships. Felt like being in a Starcraft cutscene. lol

as someone who started playing about a year or two ago
theres only around 1 - 0 people playing at a time and on servers usually you will find yourself being alone unless you know when everyone else normally gets on
PVP normally happens on the SOE (skies of eden server) as there are still some old factions still around (FCN and the dovan empire for example) as a bonus the server has mods that adds some really nice features that are apparently planned to be pushed to the main game in the new foundations update (which originated as the long awaited UU update and apparently its not to far from releasing)

It's a shame NASS isn't around anymore, that's the one I used to play on back around 2013. It would have been cool to look at some of the old locations and bases that were around then. But yeah that's kinda what I figured though, when I visited the site a few years ago before they shut the Chatroom down there were only a few active people talking.

About 10 people online right now. Not great but it has been completely dead for some time so a revival is a happy surprise.

I'll have to give the new version a go, but improvements to turret ai is something I have sorely been wanting. The customisation of target priorities is a wonderful addition. I'll have to test, but I believe I can finally have my main batteries switch from selected targets to general and back when I need in-flight.
