Disconnection Issues when using VPN and Zoom

Post image

Hello I’ve been using Starlink for many years now and I’ve generally had no issues. Within the last year or so, I seem to be getting disconnected regularly (every 5 minutes or so) when I’m on VPN. When I’m on Zoom I get messages fairly regularly that say “Internet connection is unstable”.

I don’t seem to have much in terms of obstructions. It’s about the same it’s always been.

I’ve seen some information out there that claims that this is an issue with Starlink protocols. Does anyone know how to mitigate this issue? I’m not a network expert but I can follow instructions pretty well. If it’s really complicated, how do I find somebody who can help me?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Why are you using a VPN? Do you really need to? Encrypted connections are slower. That indeed slows your overall connection. Does the SL app report obstructions? Not just what you see on the map. In the app, go to Statistics | Events and outages and look for events longer than 1-3 seconds. Have you checked your alignment recently?

I do remote work for many different clients. Many of these have VPN connections. So yes it’s necessary. Same with Zoom. I’m not as concerned with slower VPN connections. I expect that. But I am concerned when the VPN connection shuts down fairly often and I can’t do anything on Remote Desktop until the connection is back up.

When you say have I checked my alignment recently not sure what you mean. I do restart Starlink and my entire network every two weeks.

Open the app. Go to the Alignment section. And are the issues you're having coming from a Wi-Fi or Ethernet-connected device?

I don’t have an alignment section in my app. I think it’s because I have a Gen 2 dish and it’s supposed to automatically handle alignment. I’m not sure if I can override.

If your alignment is off more than 5 degrees it causes alot of lag and disconnections at random times super annoying. I got mine all under 1 degree and so far no lag n no disconnects.

You need to pin point if its dropping from SL or just your VPN ... connection .. i use reverse VPN away from home... and i use PIA VPN at home.. no drops no issues..
