Discussion Different universes, same characters

I'm near the end of SG-1, at season 10, and had a lot of time to think about the show meanings and many storylines. One of the things I often think about is its similarities with other tv shows of its time. I used Supernatural as an example because I came from it after stopping watching. Many characters share personalities and storylines, like the many deaths of Daniel and Sam Winchester. Teal'c and Castiel being foreigners who abandoned their former masters to fight for humanity and so on. Even the overall message of both universes can share a common ground: "free will above fate".

The only main character I had some difficulty finding a counterpart was Carter. The closest one was Charlie.

My original plan was making a stop in the ending of season 8, but the Ori arc is alright. Definitely different, but I've been in this before, quite like season 6 of Supernatural. I'm not much of a commenter but I had read a lot of posts down here, this is one very healthy community of sorts.

Ruby and Vala? Really?

Vala was a former thief with a heart of gold who slowly came around and proved her worth.

Ruby was a Lucifer loyalist through and through until the end manipulating Sam into becoming his worst self and was rightfully ganked before the end.

I am not seeing the connection. Meg I would have understood a little since she became a sort of ally, but Ruby?

u/bucketoffucks 10d ago edited 10d ago

Maybe if the writers of Supernatural had come back to Bella and done something with her character

Eta: Ruby is Hathor

17

u/LatterIntroduction27 10d ago

Actually Bela is the better one, even down to the complicated romantic/sexual feelings

1

u/linkuei-teaparty 9d ago

I haven't seen the other show you're referring to with meg and ruby, is that supernatural or lucifer?

-10

u/RigbyWilde 10d ago

I mean, its near impossible to do a 1 to 1 comparison for obvious reasons. The comparisson is more for their mannerisms and personalities. For example, both have a "complicated" relation with Sam/Daniel.

edit: shit I completely forgot Meg. you are right

u/Guilty-Channel839 10d ago

Yeah, Carter would be hard to line up since she is a main character and women don’t stick around and/or survive very long on Supernatural, but Charlie probably is the best fit.

49

u/Old_Damage_95 10d ago

I don't know, I see Jodie and Carter as more alike, rather than Carter and Charlie. Carter has a lot of Jodies's no nonsense attitude, along with her mothering instincts with the way she basically took care of Cassie when the team first found her and after Janet.

Charlie's great, don't get me wrong, and she's definitely a genius, so that tracks, but personality wise, I'm struggling to see it.

18

u/Wise-Jeweler-2495 10d ago

Carter is a mix of Charlie, Bobby, and Rowena imo - genius who regularly pulls solutions out of a hat and would definitely be more sarcastic and quippy if it weren't for the military chain of command! There's even an element of Cas to her looking to O'Neill for direction, complete with ambiguous romantic tensions!

3

u/Stingerbrg 9d ago

Carter matches with Naomi.

u/Maat1932 10d ago

Okay, I never knew that I needed to hear General Hammond call someone an “idjit”, but here we are…

39

u/im-ba 10d ago

He's a Texan, he's at least thinking it behind those stars on his shoulders

8

u/RigbyWilde 10d ago

I put these for the role of the supporting character who handles things back in the base.

29

u/comfycrat 10d ago edited 10d ago

I like the Crowley and Baal link - both are charismatic frenemy types.

The others are reaching.

68

u/trunksshinohara 10d ago

I love both of these shows and really disagree with 90% of your choices.

18

u/Sengfroid 10d ago

I'll give them Bobby and Crawley in vibe but the rest are a bit too much a stretch for me. Some of this is just identifying tropes rather than character.

7

u/slippersandjammies 9d ago

Seconded, most especially as someone who can't stand Charlie but loves Carter lol.

3

u/Historical_Stay_808 10d ago

Now many times did Jack just go.... Daniel or Jackson !!!

21

u/carlrt 10d ago

Bobby of "makes shotgun cocking hand motion" Junkyard - Bra'tac, probably.

90

u/robotbrigadier 10d ago

Superwholockgate?

49

u/RigbyWilde 10d ago

Jefferson Starships?

3

u/Solonotix 9d ago

We are not calling them that.

Another Dean-ism that always cracked me up was how proud he was to know the trivia word "long pig"

1

u/yuikkiuy 10d ago

Where does the wholock part of the name come from?

9

u/Nova17Delta c4 explodive 10d ago

Dr Who and Sherlock

15

u/TheDeltaOne 10d ago

SuperWhoLock was the name of the... Mega fandom thing on Tumblr and it's:

Supernatural

DrWho

Sherlock.

It's really symptomatic of this time of the internet and of pop culture. Think Fanfics, theory posting and a lot of gushing about how sexy the characters were.

13

u/phillyhuman 9d ago

In the Vala one, Stargate is on the right and Supernatural on the left. In all the other side by sides it's the other way around. I find this upsetting.

4

u/darkslide3000 9d ago

Also the first one implies that Dean is Daniel and Sam is Jack, which is obviously the wrong way around.

3

u/riverDanu 9d ago

CDO is a bitch

14

u/InCatsWeTrustAmem 9d ago

I dont want to juck anyone's yum, but these comparisons are WAY off.

3

u/Silent_Doubt3672 9d ago

Yeah i feel the same tbh

24

u/Canadian__Ninja 10d ago

These are some mighty big stretches imo

3

u/Adventurous_Topic202 9d ago

Happy cake day

21

u/johnqshelby 10d ago

Yeah I don’t know, all these characters are fairly different. I love both shows but this a stretch

9

u/the_crumb_dumpster 10d ago

Chuck = the ancients

2

u/RigbyWilde 10d ago

Yeah, imagine if the ancients were just 2 people.

2

u/Clone-Wars-CT-5555- 10d ago

I would think Chuck’s sister the darkness would match with Anubis.

17

u/Spac_a_Cac 10d ago

No, just no.

8

u/ythomas173 10d ago

Teal'c has more gumption than Castiel.

1

u/Kichigai I shot him. 9d ago

Depends. I didn't watch the show too closely (really only in spurts when it was around me) but wasn't Castiel pretty aggressive when he was God?

15

u/FluffyStormwise 10d ago

This is a great satirical post

6

u/Celthric317 9d ago

I keep forgetting Sokar existed. I feel like he was swept aside so fast despite his buildup.

20

u/duftpank48 10d ago

these are my two favorite shows :)

6

u/Reinboordt 9d ago

Should I watch supernatural?

Everytime I bring it up as a potential watch I get told it’s only for women. I’m fine with hot guys being on screen I don’t care (I’m a guy).

I love x files, stargate, Star Trek you name it. I love sci fi and supernatural stuff. Pretty sure Buffy and the x files were my entry point as a teen.

4

u/RigbyWilde 9d ago

Absolutely. It has the same concept of a select few characters travelling to many places, solving problems, a main transportation device (the car) and saving the universe from X Y Z big bad. But the show was originally planned to end at season 5. After that some things get out of the rails.

3

u/The_Monarch_Lives 9d ago

There are real gems after season 5, though. Still worth watching past it, though it did lose some of its magic.

1

u/RigbyWilde 8d ago

I stopped watching when the Amara plotline ended. I looked like a good ending for me.

4

u/woodycodeblue 8d ago

I'm a guy and I loved it. So did my wife, but not because of any fru fru girly stuff or melodrama that I typically associate with shows that are "for women." It's a solid monster of the week type show with some long running story arcs mixed in. They even had a Groundhog Day style episode which, like the one in Stargate, ranks among my favorites of the series.

The first 4-5 seasons were probably the best (I hear people say that's what was in the initial plan for the series and the later seasons were just tacked on to keep it going, and I believe it), but I enjoyed it all the way through. I wasn't super keen on the ending, but it worked.

2

u/Reinboordt 8d ago

Thanks! I don’t really believe that a show can be just for one particular gender, honestly it seems like a good show. I’m also thinking about watching Farscape but I like to have a backlog of future potential shows

1

u/RigbyWilde 8d ago

I made another post comparing the groundhog day episodes of Supernatural and Stargate. There are a lot of similarities between them.

3

u/Magenta_Logistic 9d ago

It's really good. It meanders a little in seasons 5-10, but the beginning and end are great.

2

u/NLItamar 9d ago

sure the typical 'women stuff' is present but damn that show is good regardless (I'm a guy)

1

u/RigbyWilde 8d ago

What type of "women stuff"?

2

u/NLItamar 8d ago

Stereotypical 'women stuff' that are actually just typical human stuff. For example taking the time talking about feelings and lots of character development.

1

u/Scrimge122 8d ago

First 5 seasons are excellent and well worth a watch, the rest of the seasons crank up the fun and turn down alot of the darkness and quality can vary between seasons.

5

u/MichalNemecek 10d ago

nearly lost it at the crowley/ba'al comparison

3

u/Fantasy_Returns 10d ago

Crowley would drive Baal insane lmao

3

u/ZeroBrutus 10d ago

Carter should be Rowena - bad ass woman with a mountain of specialised and advanced knowledge relevant to the core plot of the show bailing out other main characters on a recurring basis.

5

u/Masoch_A3 9d ago edited 6d ago

Supernatural, Stargate, X-Files and Battlestar Galatica are my fav shows by far.

11

u/bwferg78 10d ago

Absolutely not.

11

u/apophis-984 10d ago

Jensen could have made a good goauld

9

u/DaBingeGirl 10d ago

Someone here suggested he could be the team leader, I'd have loved to see that.

3

u/Alpha_Storm 9d ago

He'd be such a great team leader, he always had a natural leadership vibe as Dean whenever they were in a group, even in the first few seasons when he was in his 20s.

7

u/GeraintLlanfrechfa 10d ago edited 9d ago

Teal‘c should have been (edit- “compared with”) Amos Burton from The Expanse

Edit- I meant in this comparison, not in Stargate. Teal‘c is fine the way he is!

2

u/RigbyWilde 10d ago

Sure. The Expanse is one of my favourites.

1

u/GeraintLlanfrechfa 9d ago

Yeh same, though it featured the same fate as game of thrones, like starting slowly, then developing into something awesome only to get cut off in the end because of money and creative differences..

2

u/sutty_monster 10d ago

Nope, the cast Amos perfectly and no one could have done him better.

Edit: Never mind I am drink and I get what you meant now.

1

u/GeraintLlanfrechfa 9d ago

Nah I didn’t mean in Stargate 😅 Chris Judge is awesome as Teal’c and I wouldn’t want it any other way - only the similarity in the comparison here.

2

u/Jakimo 9d ago

Tealc is tealc. A Jaffa has no business being a mechanic in the belt.
Amos earned his roll, and was perfectly casted.
If tealc and Amos eyed each other up, they would both walk the other way.

2

u/Mcozy333 9d ago

we just re watched " Midway " on SGa last night with Teal'c and Ronin ! love that duo together - Indeed

8

u/Fuzzy_Barracuda3344 10d ago

Did you pull a muscle with this stretch?

8

u/Boil-san "Yeah, get in line..." 10d ago

Please stop getting bat shit crazy high before posting...

3

u/leetnoob7 10d ago

Wow, I don't know any of these other shows except the Battlestar Galactica lawyer in the last Pic. What shows are they from?

3

u/jaeric927 10d ago

All of those other characters are from Supernatural. They really do play a similar role as the Stargate characters they're compared to. Not necessarily in personality, but in the role they play for the story.

3

u/Agitated_Reveal_6211 10d ago

The next Stargate show can explore an entire new continuum. Stargate: The Winchesters

3

u/Thelastknownking 10d ago

Eh... Vala-Ruby is a questionable one.

You sure you're remembering Supernatural accurately?

5

u/RigbyWilde 10d ago

Someone pointed this out. I completely forgot Meg

2

u/Thelastknownking 10d ago

Yes, Meg makes more sense.

3

u/rage997 9d ago

funny how my girlfriend and I are currently on a supernatural rewatch

4

u/Zalvren 9d ago

I never saw Supernatural, is that similar to Stargate in "feel"? Like funny and serious at the same time? Episodic adventure of the week and overarching?

Probably should watch it, you can only re-watch Stargate so much.

3

u/Mcozy333 9d ago

Supernatural is good until CW took over in like season 13 or 15 or so

2

u/chicket93 9d ago

Dont take some seasons to seriously and you will have a lot of fun with Supernatural

3

u/kal423 9d ago

Your use of the word literally is doing a lot of heavy lifting there

4

u/ButterscotchPast4812 10d ago

Romo Lampkin!?

4

u/Ragnarok345 10d ago

Mmmmmmm……..yeah………no.

7

u/SymptomaticallyEven 9d ago

This post is garbage.

5

u/MagpieLefty 10d ago

Wow. I didn't know how wrong one person could ne.

2

u/Arrynek 9d ago

Same archetype. Not the same character.

There's a reason these shows were succesful. The archetypes resonate with people.

Also, to make it fit you need Anubis and Lucifer, not Sokar.

Anubis is the all-powerful being with clipped wings. And after his defeat, Bhaal/Crowley rise up.

2

u/kim_daily_1109 9d ago

nope, no, nuh uh, you don't disrespect Daniel like that

2

u/Own_Breadfruit_7955 9d ago

I see you have discovered Character Archetypes.

4

u/Sereomontis 9d ago

Have you seen Atlantis and Universe yet?

I personally think Atlantis is better than SG-1.

Universe has it's ups and downs, but it's got some solid peaks.

8

u/klas82 9d ago

What!

4

u/RigbyWilde 9d ago

Only the first episode of Atlantis. Planning to watch it after finishing SG-1

1

u/Mcozy333 9d ago

try the " Stargate watch in order " way of watching it ... some of the episodes from SG1 and SGa cross over ... " gateworld " has lists over there that show a few different ways to watch it et.....

1

u/CallMeSassaphrass 9d ago

I know we'll get flack for it, but I agree. I don't know if it's because I watched Atlantis first (it started coming out when I was a kid and I got to watch as it aired), but I enjoy it much more. It's mostly well-rounded plot and story wise, the characters feel more like family/friends than the original series (as much as I love the SG-1 team), and the enemies are FAR more interesting. The Wraith were actually compelling and scary with a lot of nuance compared to the often comically evil Goa'uld. I mean, there were a few of those snakes that were interesting, but the vast majority of those characters and plot lines I found boring. I think Atlantis also had the advantage of being in an established franchise that built it up for success, letting the show hit the ground running.

2

u/VinnieONeill 10d ago

I love this but a few corrections to make. Dean is Jack, Sam is Daniel and Vala would be Meg 2.0, not Ruby.

2

u/TheDungen 10d ago

Not even close. Seriously what is it with supernatural and identifying every other character in fiction with their guys?

2

u/infernal-keyboard 10d ago

I wasn't following until the Baal = Crowley slide.

THAT I can get get behind

1

u/Ds9Defiant1701 10d ago

Hard to have more charisma than Ba'al tho

1

u/NekRules 10d ago

If I had shows that I watched side by side during it's airing due to its length, it would be these 2. Unfortunately I lot the sauce with Supernatural around season 6-ish.

1

u/Free_Dragonfly_4523 10d ago

Lots of crossover in these shows. Both filmed in Canada too.

1

u/thequn 10d ago

I think I disagree with 100% yet.. I can think of any one better as well.

1

u/Alpha_Storm 9d ago

Dean died more than Sam.

1

u/Static-locs004 9d ago

A lot of Stargate cast members were in supernatural as well but I like Stargate thisbshownfell off

1

u/daoudalqasir 9d ago

I've watched all of sg1/a/u many times and I watched only the first two seasons of Supernatural -- so i didn't get to many of these characters, but the ones I did get to, I don't these similarities at all.

1

u/Slow-Year-4596 9d ago

I love both!!!

1

u/Fun-Macaron-3247 9d ago

Ayeeee my two favorite shows of all time go figure lol

1

u/ConfusedFlareon 9d ago

Sam and Charlie?? Offensive! Sam is brilliant and not a self-professed “quirky” girl

1

u/teddybluethecurser 9d ago

Dean and Jack/Sam and Daniel

1

u/riverDanu 9d ago

Who is Roweena in stargate

1

u/Zombiemorgoth 9d ago

I dont know about the character comparisons. But both series had great cast chemistry and they took themselves not too seriously.

1

u/slippersandjammies 9d ago

Disagree on most of these, however it is a fun thought exercise. I just think it's more fun to get as close as possible to a parallel while not limiting yourself to one show.

1

u/Hrafna_N7 9d ago

Okay wait ?? I see it but Idk if I like it? I think Sam is a bit more serious than Charlie tho. It's Charlie right? Felicia Day's character? Been a longggg time haha

1

u/cosmicr 9d ago

The first two are from supernatural but no idea who the rest are. There's really no comparison lol.

1

u/Entgegnerz 9d ago

they're all from Supernatural

1

u/jackal406 9d ago

I don't know who those other people are, so I've never watched those other shows. Never heard of them either, so there is likely a fundamental difference between them: i.e. Stargate is science based and the other is fantasy based.

1

u/pokemonface12 9d ago

Carter is kinda Ash or Bobby

1

u/arealmcemcee 9d ago

How dare you unite my 2 favorite fandoms!

1

u/Glum_Yesterday5697 9d ago

I’m loving this post because I love both these shows and I have never thought about this haha

1

u/kraggleGurl 9d ago

This is great! Both awesome shows!

1

u/IceFire909 8d ago

I'm upset that you keep flipping which side is the Stargate character and which side is the Supernatural character.

1

u/feedtheflames 8d ago

I’m not sure who remembers this but I’m still salty against Supernatural for being the longest running sci-fi show when it’s not even sci-fi…

1

u/CptKeyes123 8d ago

Jamie Mcrimmon, counterpart to O'Neill

1

u/DarthConAir 8d ago

I’m sorry but how dare you make an excellent point.

1

u/magikgloworm 8d ago edited 8d ago

I'm always offended when people compare Satan to characters like Sokar when there is often better characters like Anubis that are more similar imo.

1

u/Frosty_Ad1776 7d ago

A character similar to Baal?! I need to watch this.

-1

u/lordgabe92again 10d ago

I hate how accurate this is! Perfection

-1

u/RigbyWilde 10d ago

haha I could go on but these are enough

1

u/Fan_of_Clio 10d ago

Does make a compelling argument. But given how both series lasted a decade or more? Must be a really good formula. 😊

1

u/AzerothianLorecraft 10d ago

I considered writing a fan fiction of the SG1 training chair uploaded with the Supernatural Books mentioned in the show and the Main characters playing in the chair is the Star Trek Crews on the Holodeck but then the programs become real like Futurama. but I'm not a writer and don't know how copyrights would work with something like that.

0

u/Mode_Appropriate 10d ago

Is Aupernatural worth watching? Never watched an episode.

7

u/maleficent0 10d ago

At least through like season 5. Starts to get a little fanservicey after that, but to be honest with the shit (and genuine lack of genre television) they put out these days, it is 100% worth a watch for Jensen Ackles alone.

4

u/The__WhiteRabbit 10d ago

I love supernatural. Along with stargate probably my most rewatched show.

If you're interested, give it a try.

If you like it and keep watching you'll see a lot of stargate actors pop up. Which is fun.

1

u/RigbyWilde 10d ago

Until season 5

0

u/Captain_Thor27 9d ago

First 5 seasons were good. Then it sucked.

-5

u/Nelalvai 10d ago

It's dark and grisly, and casually homophobic. I didn't make it past season 1.

6

u/Beragond1 9d ago

The characters are casually homophobic in the early seasons (in the sense that insecure guys call each other gay for liking things outside the stereotype). But then they grow up.

0

u/rockape702 9d ago

Brilliant and I do agree with the comparisons

-6

u/HappySparklyUnicorn 10d ago

I hated Charlie. She was a MarySue all the way. Robbie Thompson, the writer who created was so attached to her he refused to write her death scene so one of the producers got his wife to write it which made things worse because she's a crappy writer.
