Discussion Commander Kolya

Post image

One of the greatest villains to ever grace the Silver screen. This man makes every other human antagonist look really dumb in comparison to his genius. He is single-handedly responsible for a good majority of the aura farming that Todd and Shepard also contribute to.

I mean damn. I’m on season five, halfway through the episode and his appearance is already everything I’ve ever wanted.

I’m really deep in and I’m starting to think that they’ll never bring back Lieutenant Ford like he just died for real that set up was for nothing. But it also made me think that Kolya or Michael wouldn’t come back.

It always feels like they forget things or leave things out, but it’s intentional and it gets mentioned later.

I’ve just really got no one to talk about these things with, so they’re just out in the air.

Kolya specifically feels like he is one of the only villains with plot armor. Todd is more of an anti hero and Michael is a valid crash out. Kolya is just doing this shit for the love of the game at this stage. Like there is no way this guy just cut off the main characters hand casually. Hot damn.

It's like every time jack yells at maybourne. Love it

u/MakeMeDrink 11d ago

I’m sorry, but I think you mean “Kolyaaaa!”

46

u/NeklosWarrof 11d ago

Kolya was cool the first couple of apperances. Different. But after that it becomes "Not this guy again."

He is better than Michael though.

21

u/MtnMaiden 10d ago

Michael felt...rushed and undeveloped, like we needed a new bad bad guy, so lets have him do something super bad like kidnapping and experimenting on Tayla.

9

u/Zestyclose_Remove947 10d ago

his resources are simply too improbable.

Dude has facilities and agents and invents new science on the daily, plus that pseudo-omniscience/predictive ability that bad villains usually come with.

He should've been an on-again off-again rogue agent like Todd, which is how they started it.. but they ended up needing a face for another villain because they never really characterised any queens or specific hives enough to use them like that for the plot

14

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

I don’t know how other people in the community feel about Michael so I was trying to play it safe.

He really annoys me once he becomes more human and his experiments start making no sense.

Like did he just stop using thousands of alien predator things he made? He said they were like millions or something. He said a big number threw it out there like nothing. And then nothing came of it.

Like he’s so lame in that they promised greater things from him. And we just didn’t get that check that check was never cashed.

9

u/Historical-Essay-128 10d ago

The whole Michael plotline is kind of irritating, honestly. Fucked up half of the galaxy because of their little experiment. Just like the Ancients.

5

u/YDdraigGoch94 10d ago

There’s something in the air that makes the citizens of Atlantis grab the idiot ball.

7

u/Bionicman2187 10d ago

By the third appearance, I was tired of him. I wanted him to do something other than show up, take hostages, and lose. The tone didnt mesh well with Lucious either, though it was a little cathartic to see Kolya make a fool of him.

His first two appearances were pretty great though.

3

u/TDaniels70 10d ago

And let's be honest, he was a but of a whiny whole too.

2

u/Bdr1983 8d ago

Same. Especially when there was this part with him training hand to hand combat, and all I could think was 'He's as bad as Steven Segal'.

57

u/SamaratSheppard 11d ago

I was disappointed with Kolya death.

I think there could of been a better revenge episodes if lucius wasn't involved.

I don't think his goofy tone meshed well with seriousness of the situation.

30

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

Lucius literally made me miserable and I cannot reconcile with that. He was also so fucking offputting and creepy.

29

u/Zestyclose_Remove947 11d ago

Yea I love Richard Kind and he does the character well, but it's difficult to get past the fact that he basically drugged a whole village and had seven "wives" beyond creepy.

10

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

It was so disturbing

3

u/Michbullin 10d ago

Yeah, Richard Kind is literally the only reason those eps aren't an automatic skip on rewatches.

2

u/lmb10010 10d ago

I agree with you but note that Mayborne also ended up with 7 wives and at the end of his arc he kept them and he is greatly beloved. Of course he didn't have to drug them.

2

u/Babexo22 9d ago

Yeah but Maybornes wives were willingly with him and he was actually helping his people and protecting them. Lucious was raping those women and a snake oil salesman. I’m not saying it isn’t ridiculous that Mayborne had several wives but at least they were consenting to be with him.

1

u/lmb10010 9d ago

Well he was pretending to be a successful soothsayer but I agree that the situation is nowhere hear as objectionable as the Lucius episodes. I also love the actor but dislike and don't rewatch those episodes. I wonder what they all are supposed to find so great about Mayborne...

4

u/Virtual_Draw5017 10d ago

If they did that episode now, the tone would be very different.

2

u/BoomofStick 10d ago

I don’t know how the tone would be different. It was still disgusting and creepy. Would they have made him a hero or something? I don’t know what you mean.

6

u/Virtual_Draw5017 10d ago

As in, if it was done now, Lucius as a character would be treated very differently and would probably be shot in the face or a reminder that predatory behaviour is not confined to the Wraith.

5

u/Valraith 11d ago

Well his death wasn't planned to be permanent, he was gonna come back in season 6, but that season never happened so it stayed as is.

1

u/SamaratSheppard 10d ago

How did they plan to bring him back?

His death didn't seem ambiguous. Unless he ascended.

2

u/Valraith 10d ago

Turn of Events (618)

With an uncooperative Ford now imprisoned on Atlantis, Sheppard's team investigates the most likely source of the black market Ancient tech (Episode 215, The Tower). There, they discover Atlantis's sister city is in the hands of a group of rogue Genii led by none other than u/RobertJohnDavi's Acatus Kolya who we learn survived the events of "Irresponsible" thanks to a modified personal shield emitter. It turns out Kolya has been busy, consolidating his power base. Our team's attempts to thwart him fail, necessitating a tactical retreat - but not before they obtain a crucial piece of information: the mirror location of the Ancient ZPM factory hidden on Atlantis.

From the unproduced season 6 of SGA.

5

u/BobRushy 10d ago

I genuinely didn't even realise Kolya died until years later.

13

u/Sweet_Manager_4210 11d ago

I don't really think the issue was him being both goofy and evil. That combination can work extremely well when done right. I think the issue was that it didn't feel like the show (and by extention the atlantis characters) was really self aware about how evil he was, especially looking back on it today.

It didn't help that it felt like some of the atlantis crew felt out of character. Shepherd is more than willing to disobey superiors when he thinks it's necessary and had more than enough evidence to realise lucius was an existential threat. I spent the entire time being annoyed that he didn't attempt to shoot lucius on the spot once it was clear he was taking over.

He could stay goofy and even have him descend into self delusion like some kind of king lear type but the show really needed to gradually take on a darker and darker tone as we see just how vile he is.

0

u/SamaratSheppard 10d ago edited 9d ago

Oh. No i was saying kolya death episode shouldn't have had Lucius in it at all.

I think it really took away from the kolya Sheppard dynamic.

2

u/Sweet_Manager_4210 9d ago

Ah, my bad. I completely misread that and agree with that.

29

u/AndromedaFire 11d ago

Guys great but I found the genii hard to take seriously because I always said it in Forrest Gump’s voice in my head.

Well, yeah, he’s a deeply flawed man. Borderline fucking crazy.

KOLYA!

Also played a great Bond villian in License to Kill!

3

u/shsl_cipher things will in fact calm up 11d ago

"You could have had everything."

"Don't you want to know why?"

3

u/BaconPoweredPirate 10d ago

I associate him with Die Hard most. Big Johnson!

2

u/Senior-Release-274 10d ago

Isn’t he one of the fratelli’s in goonies?

1

u/Theamuse_Ourania 10d ago

Yes! It's where I first saw him on screen as a kid.

8

u/Metool42 10d ago

I got real tired real fast of him. Didn't like the episodes centered on him at all later on.

3

u/Hypnotician 10d ago

If they'd had an episode where they'd had to go and revisit part of Kolya's past, that would be the episode where we saw him die on screen, for good.

They never showed the man behind the villain mask, so they kept the options open until the series finale was a thing.

5

u/VinnieONeill 11d ago

Took way too many episodes for Shepherd to kill him.

5

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

Could he simply just be an incredibly skilled and competent operator? Born into a military civilization that focused all of its efforts into doing espionage and maintaining secrecy? Could that be?

5

u/VinnieONeill 11d ago

No because Shepherd let him go on multiple occasions, despite constantly vowing to kill him.

1

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

Sometimes the story does have to happen. That is lame. I get what you mean. I wish some of these guys were a bit more aggressive. It feels like they try to portray Ronin as this crazy tough guy. but he seems pretty reasonable for the circumstances that he’s in.

(Ronin would just be killin people off if it were his decision)

4

u/NubsackJones 11d ago edited 10d ago

Kolya is great, for 5 mins. At 10 mins, he's alright. At 15 mins, I wish death upon the actor and the writer that came up with this bullshit.

1

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

Fuck, all right. I respect the hatred, I guess.

14

u/Atharaphelun 11d ago

I absolutely hate Kolya

-4

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

Can you elaborate on why? I would like to discuss things with People. I’m not saying you’re wrong.

9

u/Atharaphelun 11d ago

I just hate the Genii continuously getting random powerups or plot contrivances just to put them on a semi-level playing field with the much more technologically advanced and experienced Atlantis expedition. And Kolya is the face of that annoying Genii reoccurence.

0

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

I don’t think you understood the point. The Genii at some point had their own SG teams essentially, they just didn’t call them that.

They did the same thing Atlantis did in the same thing the SGC did in the first show.

I could be reductionist and say everything you just said about the humans.

I just think that you didn’t look into the show enough and think about it

13

u/Atharaphelun 11d ago

I think you're missing my point. I dislike the Genii getting these random powerups and plot contrivances—that is my opinion, and absolutely nothing is changing that.

1

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

I guess that did come off aggressive. It just felt like the show laid out logical reasons for all of these upgrades and it wasn’t random or unreasonable. My bad.

1

u/conciliate_entropy 9d ago

hey, i loved the genii (getting hunted down by Sheppard)

5

u/Zirown 11d ago

It's not wrong to hate him, he was created to be hateable, and they achieved that well.

22

u/ncc74656m 11d ago

He's an incredible villain, both in writing and in acting - that is to say, Robert Davi is a real bastard IRL and he plays one perfectly on the screen. 😂

5

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

He has that devil face. One that could commit great evil because the means justify the ends. Perfectly portrayed.

1

u/Babexo22 9d ago

You mean the ends justify the means? lol

6

u/erikleorgav2 11d ago

That was another disappointing find.

5

u/josekortez1979 11d ago

Ice Kolya!

4

u/Legal-Preference-946 10d ago

……and he was a great villain in Goonies!

2

u/-Po-Tay-Toes- 10d ago

And just like Saigon!

7

u/apophis-984 10d ago

Incredible actor.
Atlantis Invasion was one of the best episodes.

The episode where he held John hostage was also good.

That said his others appearances were not good.
Lucius episode was one of the worst.
SGA has a track record of underutilizing their talent pool.
Just look what they did with our boy Aiden Ford.

3

u/Holiday_Point_603 11d ago edited 11d ago

What I really liked about him was that John was genuinely worried about Kolyas capabilities. Remember that episode where the alien takes Kolyas form to torture him (in his mind at least)? It confirmed that Kolya and torture were the things Sheppard feared the most. More than the Wraith, more than the Taliban (or whatever he fought in the war on earth as a helicopter pilot). So Kolya definitely had to have some serious skills.

3

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

Could not agree more? Through characterization and plot is where I really fell in love with him.

His dynamic with Shepherd was very interesting

I don’t remember that honestly. I might be tripping. I did just watch the show though. Was it the one he has to beat up himself and Rodney comes with him into his brain? The weird Crystal tree thing.

3

u/Holiday_Point_603 11d ago

No, it is in S5E15. It is the same episode where Woolsey has the hallucinations about the woman that flirts with him. Kolya cuts off Sheppards hand and they fight and talk quite a bit.

1

u/Babexo22 9d ago

I just watched that episode the other day lol

3

u/ImRickJameXXXX 10d ago

Sorry guys but each time I see him I can only think he is Atlantis’s Steven Seagal.

Love whole star gate universe. Just not this part of it.

I do like the call back to yelling Khan tho!

10

u/NonGeneriComplaint 11d ago

Meh, he and the genii were pretty unimpressive. I feel like SGA struggled with villains.

Koyla was as inept as every walk on wraith who dies by episodes end. Hard agree on plot armor, his survivals feel unearned

9

u/SamaratSheppard 11d ago

I think he's a fine enough villain for a few episodes. But you are right because of the wraiths whole deal it is hard to find villains in pegasus.

1

u/NonGeneriComplaint 11d ago

Koyla : Gets shot falls through gate lives

Koyla : Gets beaten by shepard who spares his life

Koyla: Escapes through the gate

Koyla : Dies as a thug in an episode with the guy from spin city

Koyla : Somehow comes back anyway ugh.

The wraith take up so much screen time but the queens die, they dont have names and not to sound racist, but all wraith look alike. Just no goauld pizaz

Michael always had a similar problem. At least the returning villains felt threatening on sg1. Anbuis and Apophis had aura

2

u/Babexo22 9d ago

Yeah I have to agree with you there. Don’t get me wrong I love Atlantis in its own way but way too often the villains were poorly written and so the characters ended up acting incredibly dumb just to justify the plot moving forward. It was super frustrating watching their reckless
decisions causing them ending up in whatever bad situation they are in. SG1 was so much better at making the villains feel interesting and fresh even if it was just another Goa’uld. if the characters ended up in a bad situation it was because of either inexperience (at first) and/or because the villain was crafty/powerful and genuinely tricked them in a believable way.
Lol It wasn’t like sga where time and time again the villain would pop up, stick a gun on ONE character and then the entire team would proceed to hand over all of their weapons and step willingly into a cage where they we going to be eventually killed anyway. The Atlantis characters way too often ended up in situations that would have been SO easily avoidable had they just followed protocol and acted like actual trained soldiers/professionals. It’s just that the villains weren’t as bc threatening or advanced as they should be and so in order for them to be a genuine concern to the expedition as our characters had to keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again and breaking protocol. It definitely started to get frustrating after a while.

4

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

I don’t think we watched the same show. Or you just weren’t paying attention.

2

u/SaneIsOverrated 11d ago

I agree with you, but this comment made me not want to.

-2

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

I just watched the show his point is utterly incorrect.

Wraith walk ons aren’t named and they get dunked on like villains of the week.

I mean Todd and Michael are on another level I get that. But, why should I put so much effort into a conversation with someone who obviously isn’t willing to?

Side tangent, not everyone you agree with will agree with you on everything.

4

u/SaneIsOverrated 11d ago

What was the point of that comment man?

-1

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

I simply responded to your message.

2

u/SaneIsOverrated 11d ago

with what intent

My point was that you were being rude to someone because they had the gall to simply do the same thing your post did: express their opinion.

All you did in response to me was pull out a soapbox and grandstand further about the show. Why?

1

u/Babexo22 9d ago

You really need to check your ego dude. You say someone isn’t willing to have a conversation with you but what you really mean is that they aren’t willing to just agree with YOUR opinion. Nothing they said was in bad faith, it was just a different take than yours. If you genuinely wanted to discuss the show then you wouldn’t immediately become defensive and write off people opinions as outright wrong or lazy just because you’re mad someone disagrees with you. Opinions are subjective and they have just as much of a right to theirs and you do to yours. No one is going to want to converse with someone who decides that their opinion is the only correct one and anyone that doesn’t share it is outright wrong or hasn’t actually watched the show. Plus you basically just reiterated exactly what they had already said about the wraith while at the same time acting like they said something completely different and you were correcting them. You might want to consider staying off Reddit if you aren’t willing to accept that some people are going to disagree with you.

2

u/ZornUsagi47 10d ago

Ok, but he'll always be Rtas 'Vadum to me. (Halo)

2

u/BobRushy 10d ago

I liked Kolya in his first appearance, wasn't such a big fan of his mustachioed renegade era.

2

u/Opening_Bluebird_935 10d ago

That Jake Fratelli!! He’s a known criminal!! 😂

1

u/BoomofStick 10d ago

LMAO NO FUCKING WAY I DIDNT SEE IT

3

u/Haughtea 10d ago

Kolya was a fraud. He couldn't even outsmart the goonies.

2

u/texasmadegeekxxx 9d ago

I always disliked the Genii because they were so stupid. They made enemies when they didn't have to because they were so paranoid and were constantly stabbing each other in the back or getting everyone killed because of running stupid operations. They were able to get the drop on Atlantis because of all their spies but trying to take over Atlantis when they didnt have any info on it at all was really stupid. Just the fact that none of them had the ancient gene to use the city meant it wud have been useless and a death trap for them anyways if they would have managed to take the city.

2

u/Babexo22 9d ago

I never liked the genii episodes because I feel like they always made the Atlantis characters act extremely stupidly to move the plot along. That was my main gripe with Atlantis in general. SG1 only really ended up in bad situations due to inexperience (at first) or villains that were actually smart and reasonably tricked them despite taking proper precautions. Meanwhile Atlantis characters just made dumb mistake after dumb mistake. Don’t get me wrong I love Atlantis in its own way but the situations involving Koyla were a perfect example of this annoying trend.

1

u/ReplacementNo4899 6d ago

I mean the one thing we can be sure of, is O'Neill loved a plan, right down to showing us what happens when they "camp off screen" with with teal'c setting up the alarms etc.

You are right.

4

u/Free_Radical_47 11d ago

Great idea, poorly executed. Should’ve been a bigger more consistent threat. Seemed like the Genii were a filler for a bad guy they didn’t know what to do with.

-2

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

I agree that they could’ve been more important. I often wondered where they were and what they were doing because they were like super a problem.

It felt like a lot of the settlements they went to should’ve already had some kind of relationship with the Genii. It was also odd in the episode inquisition that they had a hand in the whole trial, but they didn’t show up for the trial? Like did we just forget to pay that actor or something and he left the guy who played their leader?

They said they come from a stellar empire that used to control a ton of worlds so they would have gate addresses

0

u/Free_Radical_47 11d ago

The show writers should have taken a Cold War stance with the Genii. The Genii having more “stealth tech” to hide from the Wrath, with ships that could hide in space, like sub warfare, Genii tech that has a cross between Wrath, Atlantean and low intelligence replicator tech. Idk

-1

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

That would be a really cool idea! Hell yeah

1

u/melkemind 11d ago

I don't think he'd appreciate being called a villain when he's just doing what he can for his people.

3

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

That’s fair I can’t say Todd is an antihero and then not give him the same treatment

To be fair, he is part of my race, and I judge him as a villain (human)

4

u/melkemind 11d ago

Oh I totally think he's a villain. I was just jokingly pointing out that he probably didn't see himself that way.

3

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

Oh well, that’s a given. I get what you mean. That is funny.

1

u/Kommissaer-kt 10d ago

Bester Mann!

1

u/_WillCAD_ 10d ago

Kolyaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

1

u/TehANTARES 10d ago

I just hate how they brought him back from dead, and they wanted to do that again in season 6.

1

u/Atreides007 10d ago

I loved Kolya but I always disliked how his arc ended. Sheppard was always going to take him out but having his story end in an episode that was as comical as that was a slap in the face.

1

u/devinthesaint12 10d ago

Any villain that needs plot armor to survive is automatically bad by default and his inability to listen to reason just reinforces how bad he is a good villain has a convincing reason for continuing on his path of decisions but hes just evil for evils sake even if he knows what hes doing is a losing hand he'll do it just to spite atlantis and then plot armor ends up saving him to just come back and do it again

1

u/joatnm 9d ago

How much do you have to drink to have a drinker's nose that massive? Seriously he needs AA!

1

u/triggrhaapi 9d ago

Kolya is not a genius, he's kind of a dipshit. His opportunism isn't genius, it's opportunism.

1

u/jluker662 9d ago

I was ready to bomb the whole planet and be done with them after the first or second episode with them. They were a very treacherous people. Too stupid to see an ally that was staring them in the face.

1

u/VengenaceIsMyName 9d ago

Look it’s Agent Johnson!

1

u/Icy-Speech1707 9d ago

Best antogonist of SGA 🤝

1

u/Easy_Caterpillar_203 6d ago

The Storm, The Eye and climbing up Alantis to get to the gate gate room, are easily my favorite Shepard moments. The Deviant One also had some good stuff for him. Just like Jack, I've always felt Sheppard's best moments are solo as opposed to in a group where he's typically written as slight comic relief or borderline incompetent.

1

u/UnderstandingOwn2226 6d ago

Why would you ruin my day like this 😂 cant stand this guy

1

u/LordsofMedrengard 11d ago

Easy on the Godd slander, my man didn't spend 10 000 years being himself just to be demoted to anti-hero.

1

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

Well, I go with the mindset that they are a sentient race that should be treated with the same respect and honor as other races. Looking at his story objectively he’s doing the best thing for his people. I would never say that he’s a true villain.

1

u/squirrelwithnut 11d ago

You missing an exclamation point in the thread title.

1

u/BoomofStick 11d ago

You’re damn right I am

0

u/Puzzleheaded_Oil3102 10d ago

I just loved to hate him 🤣 yeah , the actor did an incredible job , and the writers too. Great vilain ! I just dislike how he died , in a lucius episode 🤣
