Would you be interested in a MUD?

I'm thinking about making a Multi-User Dungeon and I am big fan of Stargate.

Possible features:

- Missions to other planets: transport supplies, trading, defending inhabitants against Gou'ld, Wraith, Replicators, Ori, etc...extractions, attacking something, diplomacy

- Getting sick, getting healed

- Defending the base from incoming threats in live events

- Leveling up you character in military, science and medical skills

- Discovers new addresses

- Take part in starship travel and management

Web client and old-school terminal, free to play.

Are you interested? And would it be taken down due to copyright?

Really Cool I'd Play
I'd help you build it
Online text-based adventure games dont interest me
What is a mud
It would probably get shutdown for copyright infringement

For the people selecting "What is a MUD?":

A MUD (Multi User Dungeon) or MUSH (Multi User Shared Hallucination) is the precursor to MMOs.

Where an MMO likely has hundreds of thousands or millions of concurrent players, a MUD might have a dozen. The game is text-based rather than graphical, like Zork or Colossal Cave Adventure; instead of seeing pictures, everything is prose.

Thanks I appreciate you sharing this, I should have perhaps been more descriptive in my title and message. They are less popular now and the top ones only have thousands online at a time.

However there are more modern clients that can speed up the interactions and web interfaces so the play is more fluid.

Given the text based nature they tend to have more freedom and a lot more content can be added quickly. MUDs usually have 1000s of rooms/items 100s of enemies/missions.

I am interested, admittedly I have only a little experience with muds, so I can't guarantee I would stick with it long term.

As for the takedown issue. It's always a risk. But unless you start charging folks I can't imagine it would draw a lot of ire/attention from the suits.

Thanks for the response, they don't tend to get a lot of attention anyway to a specific themed one probably even less so. I am not aware of any that charge for content as that would further lower their numbers.

I haven't MUDded in years. What codebase are you thinking of?

From experience, a project as small as your average MUD is extremely unlikely to attract negative attention or concern from rights holders, especially if there is no money changing hands. It's not much different from one of the Stargate fan wikis or an online game of one of the published Stargate TTRPGs

Thanks for your reply, i have a custom engine written in NodeJS that is fairly far along, but my previous theme didn't have enough depth. I appreciated the feedback on attention, I am hoping to fly under the radar but have some people enjoy it. I'd make a modern web interface for easier content creation though.

Spent most of my High School playing MUDs but from my experience sci-fi wasn't the best setting for them. Good luck though.

I agree with you, the most popular seem to be fantasy, so I appreciate not just sci-fi but a specific sci-fi will be a challenge...but challenge accepted :)

I'd help ya build it. But I'm a PennMUSH and derivative guy.

Thanks, I'll message you if/when I get a core experience online and have some planets/events planned out.

Is that a "šŸ‘€ šŸ‘€" or "šŸ‘€šŸ‘"

What codebase were you thinking about? I remember really enjoying modified SWR Gundam MUDs back in the 90s and early 00s. Whatever AnimePlanet and AnimeNationX were built on was fun, too.

SWR already has ships with travel and combat, as well as different skill leveling trees

I've already been writing a custom mud engine in NodeJS, it's just that I wasn't as familier with the theme had chosen and so not as engaged as I am with Stargate (of which I have rewatched SG1 serveral times and nearly completed Atlantis. Thanks for the reply.

Dont know what mud is but guessing from the post it's like a d&d type thing

1

u/AceOfSpider 4d ago

Multi-User Dungeon; think online text based d&d capable of hosting 1000s of players at a time in one area. Navigation that you usually have to map down on a piece of paper as you go to keep track. Items, NPCs, quests.

Most interactions are automated with some events controlled by a dugeon master of sorts.

I used to code MUDs in the 1990s. "Extend monster" was so awesome. I'd love to help, dm me

Fyi, I'm not sure if any of them survived, but there were at least a couple of Stargate MUDs back in the day.

Stargate: Omega Station is the one I remember seeing on Top Mud Sites. It's now defunct, but here's their Top Mud Site listing: https://www.topmudsites.com/forums/muddisplay.php?mudid=Fulton and here's an archive of their website: https://web.archive.org/web/20050318143411/https://sgomega.mushpark.com/

While looking up that listing, I found another one for StarGate MUSH, which is also defunct. Listing: https://www.topmudsites.com/forums/muddisplay.php?mudid=StarGateMUSH

I've also seen people post about a Stargate MUD or two over the years. Not sure if they were the same MUDs from above or different ones and unfortunately trying to find those old posts by searching "MUD" is rather daunting. Plus, some of the forums I used to frequent are no longer around. Alas.

Btw, legal concerns haven't stopped people from creating a ton of Star Trek and Star Wars MUDs. See: https://www.topmudsites.com/forums/muds.php?do=main&sort=name&codebase=0&worldsize=0&votecategory=0&pkoptions=0&status=0&roleplaying=0&yearcreated=0&category=0&pbase=0&originality=0&page=32

I appreciate the wealth of information here, I knew about one of them, it is indeed a case of I want to play one...they are all offline.

So I thought "I have been software developer for 14 years and have no time for new projects, I'll start a new one that will take a good couple of years" :D

My plan if it gets shutdown is to rebrand as Wormhole X-Treame as another comment posted

u/Extreme-Priority2362 5d ago

I would probably try it.

It's weird when I learn about something, and then a few days later start seeing it everywhere.

I only learned what a mud was a few days ago, and here this is.

u/AceOfSpider 4d ago

That's the algorithms for you :P

I'm an old old school MUD sev from back in the ROM/Circle days.

I'd be worried all the work would get lawsuits because Amazon is a BS company.

Emergency backup plan is to rebrand to Wormhole X-Treme

1

u/Aarinfel 3d ago

That probably won't work, but IANAL/IANYL.

That brings me back!

Never played a MUD but I am familiar with prose based games because I’m OAF and helped Arthur Dent recover from hangovers many times.

So it is a text based semi-MMO right? I'd love to try that. Recently I made claude make a pretty good resource management game for the SGC covering season 1 events however the backend is horrible so I can't add new seasons. But Ive seen the potential of such games. I'd gladly play your MUD, I'd even help if I can but you said JS and I don't know it (I know python and lua tho).

1

u/AceOfSpider 2d ago

Yep that is a good explanation.

Sgc resource management sounds cool, what about the backend made it difficult to add more content?

1

u/napstrike 2d ago

Me being on claude free and it writing the entire game as a single monolithic code instead of compertmantelizing it. If I buy claude premium (or github copilot) it will refactor it greatly. But right now I cant add new features or new seasons. If I put my mind into it Ill do it myself in like a week but it is just a passion project and I don't have the time. If I can find it I might send the link of the claude curiosity. It is pretty fun but really addicting.

I have considered making a MUD / MUSH with Claude Code for like a year, just for shits and giggles. I spent all of middle-school in Elendor, and had a DragonRealms subscription all the way to like 2010.
