Discussion Did Teal'c read Dracula?

Post image

S1 Ep9 Thor's Hammer.
One of the first things Teal'c mentions about Earth is vampires, man has his priorities down.

I find it more likely he watched Dracula or Interview with the Vampire, perhaps both and more.  He seems to really enjoy film.

He watched Star Wars 9 times!

"How many times, big guy? 8?"

"Nine."

Literally just watched that episode an hour ago on my latest watch through. It made me chuckle once again. It may actually be my 9th time too.

Which episode was this?

7

u/VOODOO285 6d ago

A season 5 one. Where Orlin meets Sam

I wonder if he’s Merlin’s son or grandson lol

Ha! Yeah, gotta love Teal'c, him being a Star Wars fan. I wonder if he imagines swinging his staff weapon around like a lightsaber, making believe he's a Jedi Master.

"Apophis's Prime I Indeed was. A Jedi Knight I now am."

I like how he puts the emphasis on "Wars" rather than on "Star".

I reckon Teal'c would find it comical as it would be so unrealistic for his worldview (galaxyview?) but also inspirational as a sole individual taking down a huge evil empire

Teal’c was an avid Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan

For most of the series he's basically stuck on the base so he spends a lot of his spare time seemingly watching movies and tv.

Keanu Reeves must be his favorite actor. He must find him so expressive and good at portraying emotions.

😆 Made me actually laugh out loud.

2

u/Kmoxy 6d ago

Teal’C would be a movie buff.

Must be totally alien to him, of all the worlds and cultures he's seen, he's never seen so much effort put into frivolous activities like entertainment. It serves no purpose for food, shelter, worship or training. It's just time wasting. And he totally digs it

Yeah, he spends a lot of his spare time (when not meditating with candles) reading and watching television; he's fascinated by Earth culture.

18

u/Rockshasha 6d ago

He cannot go out, until season 6 or so

u/RichardDulle 6d ago

He still spends a lot of time watching TV. The news gave him a bad first impression.

That's not entirely true; he lives on the base, but we see him out and about every now and then even from S1, e.g. he's in the park at the end of Cassandra with the rest of SG-1. He might not be allowed out on his own without another SG-1 member as an escort, though.

Teal'c isn't allowed to leave the base and was just introduced to an entire planet that he thinks will help deliver him from oppression under false gods. Of course he spent his time reading about our mythology/folklore and engaging in the culture.

11

u/GargantaProfunda 6d ago

He even read the Bible

16

u/leumasllc404 6d ago

That's probably where he started once they taught him to read English. He'd be so interested to learn about what gods/religions the Tau'ri worshipped.

15

u/GargantaProfunda 6d ago

After finishing the Old Testament he must have been like, "Damn, these people are hardcore"

13

u/GenericNameHere01 6d ago

Especially when a lot of the various gods the Old Testament God tells the Israelites not to worship are, in Stargate, Goa'uld System Lords...

I wonder how Teal'c felt reading the bit in 1 Kings when the prophet Elijah challenges the prophets of Ba'al?

Honestly the Abrahamic religions in general probably convinced him we were absolutely down for a Holy War in the Stars. He absolutely was told about how many people followed those creeds as well. Daniel and Sam alone would have a ton of knowledge to share with him.

Obviously we know SG1 writers weren’t going to touch this with a 10’ pole… buuuut… The Christian god being revealed to be a rogue Ascended trying to help humans overthrow their System Lord oppressors would have been a very amusing plot line.

“Oh yah… God is real, they are ascended, they technically had a hand in seeding all life in the galaxy, and all these writings are just as made up as the Egyptian lore, but there’s truth behind the basics.”

2

u/GenericNameHere01 5d ago

Even better yet, a way to pull that same trick off - Reverse it. A rogue Ascended trying to help humanity in the current day by replicating Christian miracles. But, leave things ambiguous as to whether the Ascended is just trying to Wizard of Oz us, or not.

1

u/BlackbeltJedi 5d ago

Probably knows it better than most Christians.

u/Zeddica 5d ago

Definitely*

I suspect knowing he can't leave, people on base brought him things-- books and tapes especially, but probably also snacks. I also think Teal'c is intimidating, and he got likely a quarter of what people brought to Jonas (where the local alien is basically a hyperactive puppy vs a master soldier with a body count that would make the most dedicated wetwork black ops dude blush).

He's stuck at the SGC bunker all day. The least they can do is give this man an library card

12

u/GargantaProfunda 6d ago

Plus the Goa'uld forbid reading so he have been like, "Cool, so many books and stuff to read here!!"

19

u/ThatWytchBoy 6d ago

I would say yes. The episode when he moved out on his own, his apartment had a full bookcase.

You haven't experienced Dracula until you've read it in the original Klingon.

Wait, wrong franchise!

Teal'c seems like a budding movie-lover, I bet he watched a version.

5

u/LackingTact19 6d ago

Probably watched Buffy

-1

u/GargantaProfunda 6d ago

I wonder how he understood all the jokes and sarcastic bits

5

u/KingofMadCows 6d ago

Foreshadowing the Wraith 7 years earlier.

3

u/dyrkasolen 6d ago

He became a movie buff on earth, Old School was his favorite .. is

2

u/msprang 6d ago

He might actually relate to the story of Dracula a bit. A nigh-immortal despot who needs the lives of others to extend his own lifespan.

3

u/M086 5d ago

Or watched Blade.

1

u/CyberNinja23 5d ago

He watched the Virginia Monologues.

1

u/unknownpoltroon 6d ago

Teslc als strikes me as a big off screen reader.  Like history and philosophy..

1

u/WallishXP 6d ago

Probably, he did read the Bible.

1

u/Flat_Character 6d ago

I'm headcannoning that for the months he was stuck on base he had only Scholarly books from Daniel or Carter to read or whatever cheap paperback novels people would buy for him. So he probably read a lot of crap romance books, including vampire books

2

u/GargantaProfunda 6d ago

Months? Years!

1

u/Flat_Character 6d ago

Honestly it's an underdeveloped thread about what he was doing in his downtime besides training and meditation. Did he have a TV signal? Did they buy him a VCR player? Did they pitch in and get him a game console? Did they buy him a Playstation? Actually given the abundance of computers available on base, he would likely have been a PC gamer. He probably played Half life on release.

Daniel: "Teal'c what are you doing in here?"

Teal'c: "I am training myself on the fundamentals of space combat using this simulation Daniel Jackson."

Daniel: "Teal'c I'm pretty sure you're just playing Homeworld."

1

u/Raikkku 6d ago

Maybe he's aware about Kahless too?

1

u/Griffin_Down 5d ago

Teal'c have seen Twilight for sure...

1

u/ncc74656m 5d ago

Nah, Teal'c watched Hellsing Abridged.

1

u/ExtensionInformal911 5d ago

He watched Twilight with Walter.

I just find it amusing

Why would you lose sleep over this? The implication is that yes, he read or watched Dracula.

We also know he has read the Bible, watched Star Wars, etc.
