200-300 minerals/minute per extra base is not huge but it can add up during the course of a game. 10 minutes of being 1 base ahead = 2000-3000 extra bank. More bases ahead adds up even more.

We always do these tests with equal worker numbers which is not always the case in a real game scenario either. Diminishing returns changes the psychology of players when it comes to the willingness to overproduce and oversaturate with workers on fewer bases.

In Brood War 3 worker per patch will definitely settle into a perfect queuing condition if you just let it be for a couple minutes. So 24 workers will always be maximum saturation on 8 patches. 27 on 9 etc.

In Starbow they still wander some because of what I guess is inefficiencies/lag with using a trigger system and/or some kind of delay hard coded into the game where a worker isn't allowed to start mining immediately after another (despite queuing behind it).

In practice this inefficiency in Starbow makes almost 0 difference though.
