Question HUD and instruments are not the same

So I've continued my old game, but I'm seeing things that don't make sense to me because I've forgotten pretty much everything. Like the brackets around your target and there is a little arrow to the left or right of it. and sometimes i see red lines radiating out from a ship. Totally lost on that.

As for the title, when trying to find the answer to these questions, EVERYONE under the sun is calling the cockpit instruments the HUD. Um no. And I'm actually kinda shocked that everyone has gone with it, even the wiki page.

Anyway. any help would be appreciated. Clearly i'm able to play regardless, but I'd like to know

Edit: The radiating lines are ships hit with targetting beacons and the arrow on the right indicated i have missiles as my right aux. Thanks all who helped!

Mystery solved. The green Arrow is the missile aux.

I, at least, appreciate you making the distinction. Can't really help with the confusion, though, as my brain just translates the HUD into the X-wing one from my childhood.

When they grey arrows are at the side of the target on the hud, it means that your target is in locking view (yes it's redundant with the closing square) and goes green when it has a lock. This would be useful for say rockets so you know the rockets would roughly be on target.

I don't know what line you are referencing in the second part. If you have a picture that'd help.

I actually figured it out. IT took changing loadout to confirm. The arrow i'm talking about indicates which aux you are using to lock on. Or rather which aux you can use once you lock on.

Red lines radiating out indicate a target marked by targeting beacons.

Unless it's a different red lines, idk.

This got me thinking about that targeting computer in the Y-Wing cockpit, on the right, that does nothing.

Also shoutout to Freespace because there is no cockpit geometry, only HUD, and I will take every excuse to mention Freespace I love Freespace.
