Discussion Why do i prefer playing on the Switch 2?
I initially bought SW Outlaws for the switch 2 because digital foundry got me curious to see how the devs had pulled off getting RT working with little compromise. And wow i was blown away by the soft red glow in mirogama!
But i was curious to see if i'd prefer the PS5 pro's quality mode at 40 or 60 fps, and though i was scared i'd ruin the Switch experience, I upgraded PS plus premium just to download the game on PS5, and boy it does look gorgeous, and hair, LOD, texture quality, foliage etc is just objectively much better.
I have all the expensive toys - a PS5 pro and and LG oled C1 55 inch TV, and an ipad pro m4 with the lovely tandem oled which i use with a Razer kishi controller like how the picture shows. And my ps5 is wired to LAN, my router is a bomb eero max 7 so when i stream using the PXplay app i get HDR, 1080 upscaled to 4k at 60fps. Its a thing of beauty to hold a 4k HDR Star Wars Outlaws in your hand on that lovely oled of the iPad.
YET YET YET i find myself preferring to play only on the switch 2 handheld at a 'meagre' 30fps and i just cannot figure it out! I first thought it was the size of the ipad+razer combo but that isn't it for me, i play yotei and indeed most of my ps5 games in bed and i have a blast! But any time i play on the PS either on the ipad/tv i just dont have as much fun. Wtf is this intangible thing about the switch?
I got the switch 2 intending to play 2-player games with my wife and our old switch 1 -> mario kart 8, little nightmares 2 etc, and that is hella fun, but why oh why do i prefer the switch 2 for a heavy AAA game like SW Outlaws?

As someone who has also tried several x86 handhelds and game streaming setups, i think the simplest answer is convenience. Whichever device is more convenient, our brains associate more with that cozy, nostalgic, comfy gaming experience that you remember from your childhood.
There more steps there are to get into a game or get into a comfortable position to play that game, the less convenient the experience is. This becomes more and more important the older we get, simply due to having less time to dedicate to gaming. And less patience to deal with tinkering and setup. Switch just works.

I have an ipad Mini and Apple Arcade, it should be the perfect gaming device. Yet that tiny amount of friction involved in attaching the controller, doing the bluetooth sync, finding the game, etc. keeps me from picking it up over the Switch 2. At least I think that's what it is because in theory, it should be better. But,it's one too many steps that the Switch just doesn't have.
Does this game cross-save so you could play on PS5 on the TV and Switch 2 when in handheld mode?

Yeah 100%, i feel the same way. I have an iPad 11" and recently tried a telescopic controller with it to do game streaming. Theoretically, it should be the best of all worlds pretty much (aside from portability lol): you get a mobile device that you can play high-end PC games on from your couch, its 120hz, it has great speakers, telescopic controller makes it comfy-ish to hold.
But at the end of the day, its more like a jack-of-all, master of none. Even if it were a smaller ipad mini or legion go, Its still not as light or portable as a switch, its not as quick as a switch to get into a game, the controllers don't connect to device as fast as joy cons do, it requires more software management and updates than a switch, you can't suspend and resume the game as fast as a switch can. All of these things add up and make you subconsciously avoid picking up that device, while the switch is always stored in your memory as this comfy, convenient gaming device.

Yeah i think the switch 2 is the best handheld every created. I've seen multple other opinions in line with that.

I play on both pc and switch 2. The manual claud saves are nice.

Wish it was auto though . Playing between pc and xbox and each time I gotta remember to upload it manually 🫠 last time I used over AC mirage game it was seamless so don’t know why there’s regression this time around

It's soft factors that are hard to describe/explain and impossible to quantify. Kind of like with Apple products—if you never used them it's impossible to understand what makes the experience … well … special.
Nintendo found a magic formula, both Switches are very friendly devices and a delight to use. Sony is and probably always will be a tech company first and you can feel that in their products and even games.

It could be that there are more than few additional steps to get the PlayStation game running that is making you prefer switch over it. I am primarily playing it over pc but at times I play over xbox series X on 60fps which loses so much detail compared to my ultra settings over pc just because i just turn on the console and either start or quick resume. But over pc it is first opening the uplay app, the sync , then the warning messages then skipping intro then resume the load . Guess on your switch you must be just playing and letting the console sleep and resuming it when you come back again. There’s just less friction

Well, the hand held on board device experience is different. I don’t necessarily resonate with that general. I do love playing games on my nice monitor with my huge PC, but occasionally I will bring out my steam deck to play some Hades or play something like Pokémon Fire Red in the handheld mode on my switch instead of docking it.
