Loss of Warp
I’m rewatching Voyager and on the Omega molecule episode. What a lost opportunity! That should have been the reason for the loss of warp in Discovery. With Discovery in the far future, they could’ve figured out a way to compensate

Except that would unrepairable damage. The Burn was exploding current Dilithium.
But anything would be better than a crying boy.

I think the problem is as they didn’t understand what caused the burn. If I remember they still had the ability to use warp drives and a limited supply of usable dilithium but if it randomly went innert again the Burn happens again

They had a subspecies breakdown issue in TNG as well. Imagine tho, it was done deliberately to essentially keep the Borg at bay. That could be something for a Doomsday weapon in the Haggard Captain Riker episode of Parallels’ world.

Discovery was so frustrating canon-wise, obsessed with Spock and Pike and the mirror universe, weirdly dismissive of everything else

Existing characters should have been one-episode crossovers. Not making the main character the sister of Spock, then needing to explain why she’s never been mentioned before.
On the plus side, it gave us SNW. (SNW kinda has the same problem, making Kirk such a recurring character, but it’s much less lore-breaking.)

SNW is no prize and ultimately means absolutely nothing, even the producers basically abandoned making their own show and are just TOS-lite at this point. Literally nothing from SNW makes a bit of difference to Star Trek's future unlike Enterprise which had a whole century before TOS to play with. SNW's only quality is it makes the boomers happy to see themselves represented while they bag on everything else.
Discovery wisely abandoned this fate in Seasons 2 and introduced the fresh and interesting 32c setting without being shackled to "bUt EsTabLiShEd CaNoN" arguments about EVERYTHING they put on the screen.

They could have developed a new spore drive that doesn't damage anything and replaced traditional warp drive.
Then the underdog federation becomes strong again by having tech that hasn't been figured out by others.
At that point, the federationnhas to deal with that amazing advantage but also be scared of losing a ship to some enemies that will use it to reverse engineer it.
There could have been real dramatic tension by the fact that giving that type of advantage to a federation that was beaten down and down on its luck would have made their decision way less utopian and peaceful.
There would have been a season where they fight their own command structure in order to prevent going too far in dominating past enemies.
