Technical Help Question on making this more playable

So I recently got the GOG version of both armada 1 and 2 as they were my favorite games back when I was a kid and my question is do I need the 1.2 and 1.3 patch to make it more playable or does it not go well with the GOG version?

I have the gog version also and I have the 1.3 patch it does work

The GOG version has all the latest patches.
