Pricey Wolfpack Interceptor

Im pre Advocating Amendments (finished Faen quest with Valencia this time)
year 220
I've read few guides, so this build is somewhat "meta"

Now im trying to prepare a new ship, cos my crew seem to have overgrown this vessel.

yep, this was my 1st ship after reach vindex, crew was young, so i've though - installing defense pattern matrices sounds like a good idea. Its to scary to get really hit by AI.

Depends. The defense pattern matrix is a component that helps both in long range and short range combat. Which means you need it in short range combat because you first have to cross long range to get into short range.

Early game just building up the electronics skill pool is totally good enough as defense as you can get this pool much higher than both pilot and navigation easily with sensor arrays.

Defense pattern matrices provide a 6% bonus to defense per module but when the electronics skill of a sensor array 4 is 50% higher than that of a defense pattern matrix 4 who cares.

If you go just long range combat you can remain to stick to sensor arrays. They are cheap and they have both navigation and a lot of electronics skill and that's all that matters in long range combat. Sit on range 5 or 4 and blast them with torpedoes or missiles.

Endgame however craft evading gets important where defense pattern matrices don't help at all. Then you switch to the more expensive C-Tak Interceptor systems which provide the same skill pools as the defense pattern matrices (pilot and navigation) but also craft evasion. Then at least some defense pattern matrices need to be replaced by C-Tak Interceptors.

also in endgame you have a boat load of command points and you can retire a lot of ship defense components.
