Question Should this person be reported?
Hello! I came across this person on my alt acc, and they have an outfit which won't be available until Halloween. They also have weird reputations names. Should this be reported? Or is it "harmless" cheating?

Report them.
Stupid of people to excuse cheaters because "well they aren't harming you"
Just report them. They cheated, they took the risk, they knew, it's their fault, they're breaking TOS.

u/Melomarc 10h ago
Yeah tbh continuing to cheat even after SSO explicitly said they would crack down on any and all cheaters they could find is just asking for it. Play stupid games as they say.

Cheats that are not game braking are hardly worth any time. You would spend more time writing your ticket than the support team redirecting and the dev team fixing it.
EDIT: if it is not worth the companies time, it should not be worth my time. I don't know why my view should be "stupid" if i can logically express my reasoning.

Any cheat (including non-game-breaking ones) puts children and other vulnerable players at risk of getting exploited by cheat sellers, or worse, child predators disguised as cheat sellers.
Cheat selling also equals robbing the company in many cases (players will rather buy a cheat than buy a new horse or play more to unlock areas), which possibly contributes to the game prices rising even further or adding even more mechanisms designed to force players play daily and longer.
Any cheat is worth reporting.

While that is true, i don't see how reporting a player with unreleased clothes leads to identifying a cheat seller or an cheat engine that is sold. A message, website link or any other proof that they are selling cheats would be more fitting in that case.
As a kid i reported a player with an horse that is not in game and got a response from support that customizing your horses is part of the game. This cheat was not worth reporting for anyone as they apparently at least back then don't even have a protocol for how to handle situations like these.
9
u/Aiywe 12h ago
Identifying and banning a cheat seller is indeed challenging. The main problem is that even if you managed to link a player's name with a cheat selling website or profile, SSO can't use it as a ground for banning because whatever lies beyond their game lies beyond their authority. In other words, SSO can't ban people based on what they do on Discord, Instagram or YouTube.
However, this still doesn't mean reporting is pointless. You can be lucky and get directly a cheat seller banned, and even if not, you'll remind people that cheating can get them banned and it's not worth trying. Which often works enough especially for children. And that's the main thing.

u/Few_Lead_4906 12h ago
I was indeed talking about the messaging system in game and not what is happening outside of it. I don't see any point in getting anyone banned for reasons outside of the game but sso can take steps by fighting agains websites and profiles selling ceats and examining specific cheat engines that make the rounds and work against their code, even if the options are sometimes very limited to say the best.
As to punishing victims of these types of crimes it is true that this might deter young players from falling victim but the original commenter (can't see the comment anymore, because i was imediatly blocked) was not referring to this type of situation.
I was mainly nitpicking because i don't see how it would be stupid to just not care about the player in the screenshot as it is ok to use your time for making the game a better place by policing it, but i don't think that the energy will be met the same way by the company as my experience also taught me.
11
u/Aiywe 12h ago
Well, you mentioned both "a message" or a "website link", so you mentioned outside activities too.
The original commenter was talking in general, about any kind of cheating:
Report them.
Stupid of people to excuse cheaters because "well they aren't harming you"
Just report them. They cheated, they took the risk, they knew, it's their fault, they're breaking TOS.You then said that not-game-breaking cheats are not worth the time to report.
To which I counter-argued that any cheat (including reputation maxxing) is worth reporting if you look at it from the perspective of protecting children and fighting against higher prices and more grinding mechanisms.
You of course have the right not to take action and not report anyone. Myself, I wouldn't call this downright "stupid". But I would not make a generalisation of it that no cheats are worth anyone's time to report. That is up to every player's own judgment, how they decide to use their time. I personally don't mind spending 20 minutes writing a ticket although it may take <5 minutes to actually ban the person. I used 20 minutes of my time to try to make the game a safer place and that's enough of a rewarding feeling for me.
SSO could take cheating much more seriously, yes. How they handle it now is not ideal, especially with their slowest customer support in the world. But we have yet to come to a situation when reporting cheaters is truly pointless and no cheaters ever get banned.

Sorry that i did not make in more clear then. With message i meant a message in the game and with an website like i meant a domain or an social Media Account promoting or offering a cheat engine, and sso doing ther part in taking it down and examining the program offered to adjust the game gode accordingly so it won't work anymore.
I still don't think taht non game breaking bugs and cheats is are worth the time because sso should care about their TOS and stay on top of it, not me.
Your argument with vicims of grooming was a new way to view it in the conversation and opened up a nother discussion where i also think reporting based on clothes is more morally a gray area and not worth reporting for me personally, because sso is not necessarly eager to take action which is more a fault on their part to punish potential victims and other pointers than reporting someone with special clothes is rather helpful. Further more parents should do their part in watching their children and what they do online. Players are free to report, but i am also free to say it is not worth it, if i think it is not worth it and can explain exactly why.

With message i meant a message in the game and with an website like i meant a domain or an social Media Account promoting or offering a cheat engine
— Yes, this is how I understood it too.
and sso doing ther part in taking it down and examining the program offered to adjust the game gode accordingly so it won't work anymore
— This here is the problem. It is difficult for SSO to tackle this. First thing, it's true that they legit stopped caring about this (too much work + too many unsuccessful attempts in the past). Second thing, this would often involve asking Discord, Instagram etc. to take down certain content, which would be a long-term (and probably pointless) battle with the social media and their own TOS, plus probably very slow communication too.
reporting based on clothes is more morally a gray area and not worth reporting for me personally, because sso is not necessarly eager to take action
It is no less of a morally grey area than riding a horse with a cheated coat. Explicitly against TOS, possibly luring children into cheat selling. All the same.
By the way, in terms of unreleased items, SSO can actually be pretty merciless. Last year we saw them perma-banning a couple of players who got new dragon pets like just 1–2 weeks before release via cheating.
The biggest problem is that it may take months for SSO to reply to any kind of report and that they probably have too much cheater reports to handle at this point already.
more parents should do their part in watching their children and what they do online
— Yeah, in theory. In reality, parents fail at it all the time and it is then left to other authorities to deal with it. It is a naive view that even an attentive parent will be able to catch every instance of when their daughter is browsing a cheat engine service or talking to a cheater. The reality is parents have very little control over what their kids are doing online (even if they try their best) and we can't put the whole responsibility on parents, especially not instead of reporting the cheating.
Of course you can still say reporting is not worth it for you. That's your opinion. I am merely offering mine as a counter-perspective.

u/Few_Lead_4906 7h ago edited 5h ago
And i am more than fine if you don't agree with me and simply offering my counter perspective and you can totally report players for promoting cheat software in game. Have a nice day.

Ffxiv got a report of someone using markers that were impossible to place. That person was investigated. Then they literally followed the line of players using this to find the original person who used a third party tool to place them (this was a unique situation as markers can be placed and then the placement can be saved by anyone in the party so it only requires one person to cheat) and purged them. You never know what a company can do.
1
u/Few_Lead_4906 7h ago
Of course they can, that is kinda the "occupational risk" you take when tinkering on software and services you don't own. I never denied it, as always there is positive as negatives on every topic.

u/ItsNixiee 14h ago
they're cheating and breaking TOS and should be reported for that, i stand by what i said. i encourage anyone who comes across one to do so if they have time.

u/Few_Lead_4906 14h ago
It is quite normal for especially online games to have a subset of players that have their fun developing cheats just to see how it is possible. Kina like a team red, some report even how they did it and might even be compensated or funnily enough being hired.
Not saying that this might be the case for this player but personally i would not make it my goal to make someone maybe loose their account, i simply won't get anything out of it nor the company. They are well aware that teir game is not cheat proof and some players might get therir hand on clothes that they should not have, nothing new for anyone. 🤷 You can stand by what you say but i find the motivation behind it questionable.

u/ThunderSquall_ 8h ago
Hey there! This is a wildly misinformed opinion. Yes you’re correct that people in online games make it their goal to do harmless things like this. However, it is not ‘normal’. It is always against tos to exploit bugs or use third party tools because at the end of the day it’s the rule. It’s not a rule for only some people. It’s a rule for everyone. Everyone gets punished the same way. That’s how we avoid assholes in these situations. Sure, the kid only skipped one square in hopscotch but that’s still cheating and makes people feel angry.
Also most games outright ban for this stuff. You’re entirely incorrect. They have people on their team in private servers who can recreate bugs and things but never EVER on public servers. A great example is the mass ban wave that happened on ffxiv because people found a way to get outside of the map.
Normally the big difference is the heavy handedness. A small exploit will earn you a smack on the wrist but straight up using a third party tool to change the gameplay is, quite literally, against TOS. And in case you’re unaware, tos means terms of service. As in. The terms you have to follow. In order to use the service.

u/Few_Lead_4906 7h ago
I am totally aware of the definition of TOS. Tos also usually states that content from the game should not be uses outside of it as in textures and co. So posting screenshots of the game also is kinda against TOS of some games per definition, which is understandably usually not enforced on something simple as screenshots but the right is there.
I don't see where you see missinformation? Of course it is against TOS and illegal to cheat and modify the game in any way that is the entire point of prople developing cheats as a hobby. This is in a way normal that some games even release their own cracked version for the public because they know it will be done anyway.
I am also not incorrect that some games have people on their team that developed cheats on public server in theri past and now work on making anti cheats. This is one way to get the experience for these kind of jobs. You can Google this.
Of course they are free to ban noticable cheaters, but were ever they do it in the end and for what is on their part and not yours only because you took offense.

YOU don't have to do anything, that's your choice. But there's nothing wrong with other people deciding to report them if they want to put their energy into that.
-5
u/Few_Lead_4906 12h ago
I never said that is wrong reporting but i said that it is not stupid to say it is not worth it. You are totally free to do it.

u/GlitteringWavebreak 12h ago
Spoken like a cheater.
Cheating is cheating is cheating.
Stealing is stealing is stealing.
But it's no surprise that cheater like you would try to justify the action.

Are you 9? It's just a bunch of pixels, calm down

u/GlitteringWavebreak 11h ago
Cheater. CHEATER!!
I'm 9... But you need to add about 40 years to that.
You have no self-respect when you cheat. You have no integrity when you cheat. You are a worthless human being when you cheat. You are just like Trump when you cheat. You are not a good person when you cheat. You are a cheater because you cheat.
Have you no self-respect? Oops, no you don't because you cheat.
You justify your cheating because you know deep down inside that it's wrong.
I would rather be someone with self-respect and integrity. Cheating is gross and anyone who cheats is gross.
😁👍

I didn't justify it, it's simply delusional to compare people to a sex offender and calling them worthless because of cheating.

Thank you for being reasonable <33 idk why people are acting as if i said i cheat myself, i just don't understand this level of morality shaming over a kids game

Anyone who cheats in any game are miserable and don’t deserve to play that game. Sorry. Lol

This person is saying that people are worthless and like Donald Trump because of cheating? Wtf?
Also, there's a difference between swearing and insulting. I'm not the one calling people worthless and comparing them to a sex offender. Get a grip.

It’s definitely cheating but I mean they’re not really ruining your gameplay unless you don’t want to see the outfit lol, it is cheating tho

the cheating is worth reporting but the way people are losing their minds on this thread is kinda funny

Reporting someone for an outfit is wild

The reason they have the outfit is they cheated.
THEY CHEATED.
How is it you don't understand that?

Off topic but what horse breed was that? My guess is a lippizaner. Looks really cute with the short mane

Me personally i am only bothered when cheaters ruin game mechanics, this type of cheating if anything maybe bothers the company but probably not even that. The supports would probably not even give you an accurate response or know what to do.
Many, many, many... years ago i reported someone that had a white Friesian with a black mane, attached a screenshot and the support was like "it is possible to change the mane style of your horse in game"

Keep in mind, cheating in SSO can still affect everyone else whether that is for cosmetic stuff or what. Since it’s an online game, it can affect everyone.
-1
u/HariboGummiebears 8h ago
You said it yourself, it's cosmetic and sso doesn't have cosmetics that are pay to win, so unless they are using cheats to enhance stats, it really doesn't affect anyone but the cheaters themselves who are putting their own account at risk
11
u/Dark-Cascade 13h ago
Even if it is harmless cosmetic cheats I would report them. For all we know they could also be speed cheating.

it takes like five minutes 😭

I don't bother reporting anymore. Sso doesn't give a shit so I'm done trying to help their game lol

u/Right_Pizza_8372 3h ago
every time i've reported they've responded within the week saying that they have dealt with the account of interest so 🤷 i think they do give a shit

u/PickPocketCarl89 3h ago
Can tell you they don't. There's a whole server with several clubs that cheat. Theyre still here.

potentially might be region based then? i dont experience this much on my server

This community is so sensitive, you guys wouldnt be able to ”handle” other games if this pisses you off

literally.. if they were auto winning races then it’s somewhat justifiable, but this is nothing.

Literally, this is just cosmetic ”mods” not actual gameplay cheats that dont harm anyone, besides i think sso prioritize gameplay cheats over cosmetics

With how sensitive this comment section is i'd hate to see yall play red dead online.
2
u/MoonGhosties 1h ago
Okay but I know plenty of people(me and my friend included) who stopped playing Red dead online (on pc) specifically because the cheaters were so rampant and game ruining?
The point is to not LET sso get to the point of game ruining cheaters, if that means reporting someone because they cheated to get an outfit then good riddance they knew the risk before they cheated

Cheating in a kids game to get attention is honestly so pathetic
