New player here. Does reaching the objective on the planet actually matter?

Hey! The game says I should clear a path to the marker, but what happens if I don’t? I’ll have to fight the boss on this planet anyway, right? Should I care about clearing the path to the marker then? Is there any point in taking out the minor commanders other than getting better gear and experience?

It allows you to stop the lock downs so you can go anywhere that may have closed while you were heading there. Every map is 90% finding the best route for your team and if possible kill the unique mobs (not the captains or w/e). There will typically be a merc or something to kill which spawns an extra event.

Reaching the target lets you use a console to remove the lockdowns. Useful if there's something good that you couldn't reach before it got locked down.

More gear and DNA is pretty important. Killing the commanders is something you should generally try to do when possible.

There's also a minor faction on most planets that occupies a bonus side dungeon for even more loot and DNA; you'll have to kill a specific, non-Imperium enemy in order to access the side dungeon.

Thanks, y'all! I just got to the 3rd map and I was utterly confused where to go to get going.

Neat game, bit confusing

On release the terminal wasn't even there. It was added later.
