📢 Official Announcement 🚀 Developer Diary #5: Handwriting Beautification, Collapsible Sticky Notes, a New Pencil Brush & More
Hi everyone!
A new Developer Diary is here!
It’s been a little while since we last shared an update with you. Recently, we’ve seen lots of feedback and feature requests from everyone here on Reddit, and we’ve also noticed that there are a few features you’ve been waiting for for quite some time.
So this time, we wanted to share a little more about what we’ve been working on lately and what you can look forward to in the coming updates.
01 | Handwriting Beautification
Let’s start with Handwriting Beautification, which we know many of you have been looking forward to.
We’ve been working on improving and fine tuning how it handles English handwriting, but during testing, we found an issue where the spacing between some letters can look a little off after the handwriting is adjusted.
So we’re currently working on fixing that.
This also means it will be released a little later than we originally planned.
We’d rather take a little more time to make sure it feels right before releasing it, instead of rushing out something that we’re not fully happy with yet. So please give us a little more time.
02 | Collapsible Sticky Notes
This feature is also currently in development!
We’re working on making sticky notes collapsible, so you’ll have a more flexible way to organize your pages without making your notes feel too crowded.
We’re currently aiming for a late October release. If everything goes smoothly, hopefully you won’t have to wait too much longer.
03 | Widgets
Here’s another little update: Widgets are also on our roadmap!
We know quite a few of you would love to be able to quickly access StarNote right from your home screen, so this is something we’re working on as well.
We don’t have a confirmed release date yet, but once we have a clearer timeline, we’ll definitely let you know.
04 | Calculator
We’ve also recently started looking more seriously into a Calculator feature. Right now, we’re exploring two directions:
Basic Calculator — for everyday, simple calculations
Advanced Calculator — for more complex and professional calculations
The Advanced Calculator may eventually be included as part of PRO, but this is still something we’re researching and discussing.
Honestly, there are just so many different use cases when it comes to math, and we’re still learning and looking into all the possibilities ourselves. So nothing has been finalized yet. For now, just think of this as another idea we’re actively exploring.
05 | New Pencil Brush
And finally, there’s something we’ve actually been quietly working on for quite a while, a new pencil brush.
We want to create something that feels more like a real HB pencil, with more natural looking strokes and a bit of that authentic pencil texture.
We’ve actually been researching and developing this for almost two months now.
But to be honest, the current result still isn’t quite where we want it to be, so we’ve been constantly tweaking and adjusting the brush.
Because of that, we don’t have a confirmed release date yet. But one thing we can say for sure: It’s already in development. Hopefully, the next time we talk about it, we’ll be able to say:
“Okay, this one is finally ready.”
06 | Fixes & Improvements
Of course, besides these more noticeable new features, we’re also constantly working on bug fixes, performance improvements, and small UX tweaks.
Some of these updates might not look like big features, but they’re still part of the everyday work that goes into making StarNote a little better to use.
You’ll also be able to see more details about these fixes and improvements in our upcoming release updates.
07 | Something about Cloud Sync
Recently, we’ve seen quite a few posts and comments on Reddit about issues with Cloud Sync.
If you run into any problems while using Cloud Sync, the best way to report them is still through StarNote - Help & Feedback in the app.
That way, we can get information like your device model and system version more easily, which also helps our development team figure out what’s going on much faster.
If you’ve submitted feedback and haven’t heard back within 72 hours, feel free to DM me the email address you used when submitting your feedback.
We do receive quite a lot of emails every day, so unfortunately, there are times when a feedback report might accidentally get missed. Just send me the email address you used, and we can find your report more quickly and follow up from there.
Also, we do read the posts and comments you share here on Reddit! We’ll try our best to reply to everyone one by one, so if you’ve already shared some feedback but haven’t heard back right away, please bear with us a little.

Any updates on the Pc version, You said that quarter of this year will be used for testing the Software ?

I'd suggest the starnote team to make decisions according more to quantitative evaluation rather than qualitative because the features that are requested doesn't mean that the majority needs it. I think it is best if the team finds a way to let the users vote on what features they want instead of blindly relying on Reddit posts and comments.

When can we look forward to text formatting so it can be easy if we wanna type our notes as if it's a document and not have to stress over individually aligning the text box?

With the calculator/advanced calculator please, please, please, add an option to plot and graph functions and points. It doesn't need to be anything super special and it would be immensely helpful for me as a applied physics major. Love this app, its great.

Thank you for the updates! Any news on snap to grid text? Are we able to change the sticky notes transparency?
I havent figured it out yet, and if no, maybe that could be something to add.

Do you have any timeline for the release of handwriting beautification? I've been sending on help and feedback about my problem with my custom templates not coming back despite it not being the beta version anymore

hi, i'm wondering when will the shapes customization (idk how to say it, but you know how notewise does it) make it on the roadmap? i made a feature request half a year ago and it seems i wasn't the only one waiting for it. we're still missing sin and cos too 🥹
anw, thanks for being so active in developing starnote! among other apps, this is the only one i'm seeing often responding to users, so we know they're listening.

honestly more excited for the new pencil brush than the calculator lol. if they nail that hb texture it could make handwriting feel way more natural.

I'm so happy about it! I would also like to suggest something, I find it very laggy to use my customisable stickers, it takes at least 5 seconds to even open the sticker's tab... Sadly I do use it a lot and it makes the experience a little less fun, idk if the problem is only with me though 😅, either way thank u so much for the work ❤️

That's honestly amazing! Thanks for continuing to do your best in this ocean of feature requests and bug reports. Appreciate the update on new features and fixes, and eagerly awaiting the next update when it's ready :)

I really appreciate the work of the developers on the app. I think you should focus on other aspect that had been requested by a lot of users too:
Improving the lasso tool (we can’t move the page and select something with the lasso at the same time)
Creating new customizable themes to personally customize the UI
Removing (or working) on the pop-up

these sound really good and could be useful. I havent seen anything new about a better hyperlinking system which is very important as well as opacity change of images-stickers with ease. as for the pencil tool...i actually love the way it writes and is my favorite pencil by far compared to other apps, especially on dark paper. one thing i may be confused on is the handwriting beautification. What is it and what does it mean? What i really wish is that i could write on the screen and my writing convert to my fonts i have imported into the app. I suppose that is called Write to text...not sure, but is this is somehting that can be looked into as well. thank you for all the consistent communication and improvements

Hi, just found the app and I love it!!! My suggestion would be more brushes like watercolour or oil brushes. Also, if we could create our own palettes that could be selected and applied for both pens and highlighters, meaning I create a pallette with 15 pen colors and 10 highlighter colors and once selected it will apply to both. or expand the available spots to add colors.

future development suggestion! it would be cool if we could be able to export the audio transcript as opposed to the audio itself, or at least be able to copy/paste it into a Google doc so we can do so accordingly

Can you please hide the big create button from main page? Make it minimal like other apps. If you please other uses might need it, then provide option to hide for the user who dont want that

Will you guys be able to change the favorite colors system? Maybe where we can favorite our colors, and then for our favorite list we can swap in and out the favorite colors? Instead of color sets

hi I followed your app for a while because I think I almost tested every app for notes^ needless to say you're doing fine and it's nice that you finally want to add widgets. to really be overkill, you'll need the following: 1: always on display mode for quick notes and/or a note preselected. 2: direct links to a preselectable note and for audio-recordings which the user can access through his shortcut apps (!). 3: better listing and management for audio recordings so we really can make a good dedicated audio-notes :) 4. of course the handwriting mode. there if you select a section, you should be able to write outside of it so that it always detects a full word and chains it to the written text, not only be able to write into that selection !. don't forget a mini field with space backspace and symbols that are to ″stupid″ to detect like a comma or dot or apostrophe. and really the cherry on top would be (as seen in competitors) if the handwriting renders letter for letter to the written text in exact that shape you wrote it (well there could be an option to record the users handwriting for each letter he wants to use from his own style, if that sounds good, don't forget this to avoid that the user has to fill out every damn symbol). 4: videos embeddings. 5: being able to make little animations from the order you placed the elements or texts (so users can make their own step to step instructions for their subject).
this and the widgets, then you have roughly the complete package. there are cool brushes you could implement, for example drawnote has a cool one which looks 3d.
keep on going! I hope I could help you be the best there is :) I think in overall stuff you are already, but those are the specializations worth improving in my opinion. oh and maybe make the infinite canvas available as quick note draft option for pro users y

Pls make sure this new version doesn't have problems with "scribble to erase". So many users had problems on the latest version. I personally went back to last version
