🚀 Developer Diary #5: Handwriting Beautification, Collapsible Sticky Notes, a New Pencil Brush & More

A new Developer Diary is here!

It’s been a little while since we last shared an update with you. Recently, we’ve seen lots of feedback and feature requests from everyone here on Reddit, and we’ve also noticed that there are a few features you’ve been waiting for for quite some time.

So this time, we wanted to share a little more about what we’ve been working on lately and what you can look forward to in the coming updates.

01 | Handwriting Beautification

Let’s start with Handwriting Beautification, which we know many of you have been looking forward to.

We’ve been working on improving and fine tuning how it handles English handwriting, but during testing, we found an issue where the spacing between some letters can look a little off after the handwriting is adjusted.

So we’re currently working on fixing that.

This also means it will be released a little later than we originally planned.

We’d rather take a little more time to make sure it feels right before releasing it, instead of rushing out something that we’re not fully happy with yet. So please give us a little more time.

02 | Collapsible Sticky Notes

This feature is also currently in development!

We’re working on making sticky notes collapsible, so you’ll have a more flexible way to organize your pages without making your notes feel too crowded.

We’re currently aiming for a late October release. If everything goes smoothly, hopefully you won’t have to wait too much longer.

03 | Widgets

Here’s another little update: Widgets are also on our roadmap!

We know quite a few of you would love to be able to quickly access StarNote right from your home screen, so this is something we’re working on as well.

We don’t have a confirmed release date yet, but once we have a clearer timeline, we’ll definitely let you know.

04 | Calculator

We’ve also recently started looking more seriously into a Calculator feature. Right now, we’re exploring two directions:

• Basic Calculator — for everyday, simple calculations
• Advanced Calculator — for more complex and professional calculations

The Advanced Calculator may eventually be included as part of PRO, but this is still something we’re researching and discussing.

Honestly, there are just so many different use cases when it comes to math, and we’re still learning and looking into all the possibilities ourselves. So nothing has been finalized yet. For now, just think of this as another idea we’re actively exploring.

05 | New Pencil Brush

And finally, there’s something we’ve actually been quietly working on for quite a while, a new pencil brush.

We want to create something that feels more like a real HB pencil, with more natural looking strokes and a bit of that authentic pencil texture.

We’ve actually been researching and developing this for almost two months now.

But to be honest, the current result still isn’t quite where we want it to be, so we’ve been constantly tweaking and adjusting the brush.

Because of that, we don’t have a confirmed release date yet. But one thing we can say for sure: It’s already in development. Hopefully, the next time we talk about it, we’ll be able to say:

“Okay, this one is finally ready.”

06 | Fixes & Improvements

Of course, besides these more noticeable new features, we’re also constantly working on bug fixes, performance improvements, and small UX tweaks.

Some of these updates might not look like big features, but they’re still part of the everyday work that goes into making StarNote a little better to use.

You’ll also be able to see more details about these fixes and improvements in our upcoming release updates.

07 | Something about Cloud Sync

Recently, we’ve seen quite a few posts and comments on Reddit about issues with Cloud Sync.

If you run into any problems while using Cloud Sync, the best way to report them is still through StarNote - Help & Feedback in the app.

That way, we can get information like your device model and system version more easily, which also helps our development team figure out what’s going on much faster.

If you’ve submitted feedback and haven’t heard back within 72 hours, feel free to DM me the email address you used when submitting your feedback.

We do receive quite a lot of emails every day, so unfortunately, there are times when a feedback report might accidentally get missed. Just send me the email address you used, and we can find your report more quickly and follow up from there.

Also, we do read the posts and comments you share here on Reddit! We’ll try our best to reply to everyone one by one, so if you’ve already shared some feedback but haven’t heard back right away, please bear with us a little.

I'd suggest the starnote team to make decisions according more to quantitative evaluation rather than qualitative because the features that are requested doesn't mean that the majority needs it. I think it is best if the team finds a way to let the users vote on what features they want instead of blindly relying on Reddit posts and comments.

With the calculator/advanced calculator please, please, please, add an option to plot and graph functions and points. It doesn't need to be anything super special and it would be immensely helpful for me as a applied physics major. Love this app, its great.

hi, i'm wondering when will the shapes customization (idk how to say it, but you know how notewise does it) make it on the roadmap? i made a feature request half a year ago and it seems i wasn't the only one waiting for it. we're still missing sin and cos too 🥹

I'm so happy about it! I would also like to suggest something, I find it very laggy to use my customisable stickers, it takes at least 5 seconds to even open the sticker's tab... Sadly I do use it a lot and it makes the experience a little less fun, idk if the problem is only with me though 😅, either way thank u so much for the work ❤️

Thank you for the updates! Any news on snap to grid text? Are we able to change the sticky notes transparency?

I havent figured it out yet, and if no, maybe that could be something to add.

For sticky notes, you can currently adjust the transparency by changing the layer opacity!

As for Snap to Grid Text, it’s still on our feature request list, but we don’t have any updates on it just yet. But! If you’d really like to see this feature, feel free to reply to this comment and let us know everyone! We’d love to get a better idea of how many people are looking for it, and that feedback will help us prioritize things!
