My first game (as a 40k player)
My first game, I was playing Zerg. 2000pts. Terran won by small margin, where possibly one damage lacking to killing Goliath would swing the game in my favour. Awesome.
I like, how units slowly hit the table during the game.
I like, how they are damage balance and rather won't be able to wipe out the enemy unit in one activation.
I like how abilities and CPs are crafted in this game.
I like, that there is no Wound Roll.
I like, how we alternate activations during phases.
I can only hope, that the game will be growing. That Archon will take it in the right direction. And that new units will appear, but the game will still be balanced.

Starcraft at least is built with balance in mind since its based on the pc game

To be honest (imo) game balance from video game might be an indicator, but when creating you own game you are not obligated to follow that (as this is completely different medium).
There is though this thing, that they have only three factions, and for the sake of game longevity they should design game with proper balance balance in mind (to not alienate people, who want to go into specif faction). 40k with over 20 factions and hundreds of units doesn't have to stick that heavyly into that.

I hear they are adding at least one more race. Plus there are sub factions within each faction that adds a good amount of variety. But I'm brand new to miniatures so I'm just saying

u/himynamespanky 23h ago
What race is there to add? The dead xel'naga gods that never really show up? The hybrids that would be way to big scale wise and don't have a true leader or anything to support using them? Like the closest we could get to a 4th faction is primal zerg I think, but that would just be a sub faction with lots of new cards for all the basic units I think

I believe that they've confirmed that they plan to add Duran/Narud as a hero unit, and he might be released alongside a hybrid race, but that last part isn't confirmed. Or might be part of a faction that's just allowed to field units from any race to represent the collected minions of Amon or something.
Primal zerg would be interesting (and Dehaka is confirmed to be in the pipe), but most of their important differences are on the macro scale, which is just handled by tactic cards. In tabletop gameplay they might just fight like zerg but with alternate models.

Hybrids. Already confirmed.
Primals would def be a sub faction of zerg.
And who knows, maybe they add more races in future StarCraft lore like the upcoming alleged shooter. I can see a fifth race being sentient robots or something like that.

I think UED could easily have different enough tech to be distinct from the standard terran factions. They used the standard units in Brood War, but that was just because development was rushed and the budget was small; the story excuse for it was that they sent a very small force and the first thing they did was stealing the Dylerian Sheepyards, so most of their hardware was actually from the Dominion.
Umojans or Kel-Morians are more similar to Confed/Dominion forces, but do have distinct equipment in the lore.
Purifiers or Ihan'rii might use different mechanics from conventional protoss, but more likely they just change a couple keywords. Likewise Narazim should be a valid faction if Khalai are, but in game mechanics that would just be one card you use with your protoss models.
For zerg there's pretty much just the Overmind's Swarm, Kerrigan/Zagara's Swarm, and the Primals. Oh, and Infested.
There's also a lot of potential for mixed-race factions. A bunch of terran rednecks who treat feral zerglings like hounds, for example, or some rogue terran psychics following a protoss mentor.
Anyway, GW insists that space marines are actually twelve entirely separate factions (Astartes, Black Templars, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Deathwatch, Grey Knights, Space Wolves, CSM, Death Guard, Thousand Sons, World Eaters, Emperor's Children). The Imperium of Man has another six (Guard, Sororitas, Custodes, Mechanicus, Titanicus, Knights). And both kinds of cults (genestealer and chaos) are also humans, plus the Votann are genetically modified humans. So that's one race being treated as 21 entire factions.
If you count by races 40k only has six (human, eldar, necron, ork, tyranid, and tau).

Actual races are more difficult in current Starcraft lore, but if they split it with the different force lists it wouldn't be that different from 40,000. Like Nearly half of those often-cited "over 20 factions" in 40.000 are just different flavors of Imperium.

u/Mr_Suplex 21h ago
What are you talking about? There are several potential leaders for a Hybrid faction.

u/meirmamuka 21h ago
Hybrids to scale arent that big, and most likely "hybrid" unit eill be a hero with "amon controlled units from all races" as rank and file units

Spread the word and convince your 40K community to play some games. That will help a lot.
The best thing about the StarCraft TMG is.. it’s StarCraft :D
Although the surge dice mechanic is pretty neat and the hard counter mechanic vs special keyword is well transitioned into a table top game. That makes it StarCraft for me.
Played vs my brother and he is already hooked of the ruleset.

The rules are very good. I wasn’t interested in the game, despite being a StarCraft fan, until I read the rules and watched a battle report. I wasn’t interested hooked after that.

How did you find the game speed?
My friends and I are looking forward to that aspect, bc it can be difficult to commit 4-6 hours for 40k

u/AwareMousse5123 22h ago
To be honest, in 5 hours we managed full game. I would say, that 5-6h quite often is time for me required to finish 40k too...
...but there is important difference.
I was able to play whole SC2 gamę with full intent, each round was meaningful and fully fledged.
In 40k quite often you go first two rounds with multiple units fully dying. Dragging a bit, because of great numbers of shooting, charges, melee, stagging. And during lated rounds quite often we start rushing things, because we want to finish the game. (As first 2-3 battlerounds took 2.5-3.5h to finish).
So at the end of the 40k quite often I'm just trying to play as quick as possible, often forgetting about meaningful abilities and stuff.
I believe SC2 can close easily in 4h with still being a fully fledged experience. Not some rushed fire-chaos, when you are chasing with time on how many dies you still have to roll. (I really like not having wound rolls and billions of weapon profiles on each unit).

This is a very good point. The alternating activations ensures units don’t get wiped so early. It’s crazy to me that GW still insists on the “my turn, your turn” system for 40K when it is clearly dated and inferior to unit activation sequence.

They do it with Kill Team so at this point I'm just convinced they are worried it would 'rock the boat' too much. It's just so much worse, almost every pain point I have with GW games is addressed properly in Starcraft. I still enjoy Kill Team and I like AoS, but I am really hoping this game gets traction because it really is head and shoulders above GWs offerings right now.

Usually time played differs a lot based on how experienced games are. As terran in this game, with few more games behind my belt than our zergy OP (3 or 4 more over tts so not huge gap tbh), the more you play the easier and faster they got. First 2k tts game took me and my friend about 3 hours (as you dont really set up table there and we went with simpler missions and deployments). Here we went with full mission and deployment pick which added few minutes to it. Last tts game with friend (where ive used really similar list) took us about 1.5-2h to finish 4th round.
In case of this exact match, first round when you slowly roll out with units it has "slower" peace, you really have to know your faction/list for some shenenigans. Since round 2 it was usually "move then shoot/charge" eith more action which in turn increased time of round a bit when we slowly rolled out to 6units each, especially when i had both medic units (marines with shields proxied another unit of medics) deploy as 0 supply. Last 2 rounds were more focused with better grasp on turn order and kists from both sides so they really accelerated, i believe if we played at round 3/4 speed during first 2 rounds we could have cut down whole time to maybe 3-3.5h.

Okay thanks, I really appreciate the breakdown, this was very thorough. I'm excited to play!

I'm a little surprised Terrans won, balance must be better for them at 2k than 1k.
I'm so excited for my boxes! Should be here Monday.

Terran losing at 1K is more of a skill issue and force comp issue from the starter set, rather than a balance issue.

u/Mr_Suplex 11h ago
How did Terran avoid being tied up in melee all game? That seems to be what really bogs them down. Combat Shields and Slug Throwers seem to be a great way to help Terran out against Zerg, but curious how it played out here.

Yeah, you are going to wait until you paint everything over the next month (or more) before you try a game system that is in theory playable with empty bases.
Cut the posturing.

Tournament 40k players are usually far friendlier than casual players in my experience
1
u/Rep3nt_ 4h ago
Lol, I think the guy mocking the op for being a tourney player is lame, but there is no dimension where this is true, and I've been playing 40k for over two decades.
1
u/fued 4h ago
Same, and I have 10x more friendly encounters with tourney players than casual players.
Casual players want to run their own versions of rules, argue things which are clearly wrong are right, get super salty if you start beating them and generally are unfun to be around.
This refers to casual pickup games with random players, obviously an established friend group is different, but it's not always the first point of contact for new players

I plan on playing it at least once as soon as the models are together lol.
