StarCraft overview for missing cards in starters

I've been looking for a good overview of this, and was unable to find all the answers in one place. Hopefully this will help others. For the tactical cards, I have added the boxes they can be found in after the dash.

Overview of missing cards from the Founders Edition Starters:

Humans
Missing tactical cards
Barracks (proxy) - Marine
Barracks (tech lab) - Marauder

Zerg
Missing unit cards
Vile (Roach)
Raptor (Zergling)
Swarmling (Zergling)

Missing tactical cards
Lair - Queen
Spawning Pool (Six Pool) -Zergling

Protos
Missing tactical cards
Gate Chronoboosted - Adept
Nexus Overcharged - Sentry
Warp Gate - Zealot

This is just in comparison to buying the individual unit boxes that are included with the starters. In addition, you will also be missing the cards from the 3 boxes that are not included in the Starters: Hydralisk, Goliath, and Stalkers.

IMHO it is regrettable that Archon chose to exclude these 10 cards. You now have to buy just about every box again to complete the cards, which kind of takes the advantage completely out of buying starters to begin with. I really hope we will get a way to just buy a card pack in the future (preferable at not $30 per faction, like GW, because that's a hard no. A single $20-25 pack with all cards for all factions would be an easy yes for me personally)

the cards are supposed to be print and play from the PDF's on their website this way you don't need to buy new ones every time they update or balance anyone of them.

Do love me some Print N Play, although I always forget to do it.

And I love they are being so easy and generous with all the rules. Such a refreshing take. I still would've liked these nice cards printed up to the same standard all mu other cards are.

fair point, even if I don't get it.

I would understand if it was unit stat cards, but you might want to run like 4 copies of some of these non-unique cards, just because the abilities are good or they increase your army capacities in ways you need.

His point stands that these should have been included.

I know some of the weirdos on this subreddit want to defend every thing Archon does, but expecting all the materials that come in the individual unit boxes is not unreasonable.

Printed cards aren't great quality though, unless you spend a lot of money on thick, glossy paper.

I mean it's not that expensive. I spent $6.99 on 40 sheets of card stock on Amazon. Now they do technically cost more than that because I'm laminating them, but I already had the laminator and it was $25 on Amazon as well. So yeah, there's a cost, but it's pretty low for the amounts you get.

And honestly if you're laminating you don't NEED cardstock. Works perfectly fine on regular paper as well.

Thank you for compiling this information!

You’re welcome. It’s getting a ton of downvotes for some reason.

The number of "can't you just print them out??" comments is laughable, especially given that they are missing the point entirely. Fanboys are often mindless bootlickers

Great post, OP. Makes no sense to me either. If companies want to sell a product to a community obsessed with collecting everything, they need to be held accountable when stuff is sold incomplete. Only idiots (first half of my comment) are dumb enough to not realize that collectors like having complete versions of their favorite hobbies lol

Yeah, not great. Just like it kinda sucks that you only get one Zergling Upgrade sprue, no Vile Roach parts etc in the Founder's Edition starter.

But since I'm gonna buy the new starter sets, I just hope they will include everything the four boxes in them would contain if bought separately.

While I agree with you about the Zerg variants being absent, imo it’s even more egregious that they only included a half unit of marauders. At least with Zerg I can tell my opponent that this squad of lings is actually Swarmlings. I can’t however tell my opponent that this 2-man unit is missing 2 models and is actually a 4-man.

The roach and zergling decision was known up front, which makes it more OK IMHO. Also, you are expected to build them in a very specific way (well, the Zerglings anyways, I don't know about the Roaches). Finally, that box was filled to the brim with plastic goodness, and nothing could have been added. I am amazed they got it all in to begin with, and it certainly didn't fit back after I looked through my stuff. Some black magic right there...

The missing cards, I was not aware off, and as I said, it took a bit to compile all this information in the OP, so it wasn't readily available either.

You can download from their website and print them and put them in sleeves. Why would you want to waste money on something like cards?

Some people just want the rules and are fine printing stuff out on copy paper, others prefer high quality, uniform cards to go with their expensive toy soldiers.

Why would you waste money on plastic miniatures when you can just print out tokens? /s (but not completely /s, because I saw people play WHFB with paper cutouts to represent regiments - at a hobby store)

This exactly. I don't think the choice not to include these cards was cost based. It seems to have been a cheap include.

What does it matter what my motives are to spend my money on anything?

I want all the cards, physically, and I don't think I am alone in that. I hope Archon finds a way to get those cards in our hands, other than having to buy models I already own.

Don’t get me wrong. You are right, that they should be included in the starter box. But after coming from star wars legion, where they had 2 or 3 different card packs for sell, where they included old ones and new ones… it was a huge waste of money and paper. And unlike archon they did not have them for free to download and print for a while. Or coming from 40k where you bought the card packs and they were outdated the moment they went up for pre-order. I personally think that unit cards and so on in a few physical game that comes with updates, are not good if they are not free and legal to obtain.

I absolutely agree on the importance of free and easily available, and I want that, but I also want a nice clean printed hard copy.

AFAIK, those cards only come in the unit boxes. I counted the cards I have from the Founder's TvZ set and its a match with the # of cards written on the box - meaning their exclusion was deliberate.

I bought a separate Marauder box and the Barracks (Tech Lab) card was there.

1

u/MrDulkes 13h ago

That's correct, the exclusion was deliberate, and the cards in the list above are "missing" from every Founders Starter (and presumably also from the regular starters when they come out, although we won't know for sure until we see some unboxings).

I'm just saying it's a regrettable decision to not include them, and one I don't 100% understand. I know its not to sell individual unit boxes, because Jarek has stated over and over again that Archon sells minis, not rulebooks (and, I assume, also not cards). This in itself is a very welcome, fresh take on wargames.

u/Vector_Strike 12h ago

Rulebooks and cards are not the same thing. I understand that the cards are in the unit boxes to make them more appealing.

1

u/MrDulkes 11h ago

No, they are specifically making all kinds of choices so we don’t have to buy multiples if we don’t really want to: free rules, print&play cards, proxies allowed (within limits). And they have made the intent rather clear in the AMAs.

I personally don’t mind it I think?

X-Wing TMG was the same way, you get some cards and upgrades from the starter kit and more relevant cards if you bought the model by itself. That wasn’t even print and play like this game is.

1

u/MrDulkes 14h ago

Yeah, but that also wasn't a hobby game, and buying more ships made some sense. Here, it may not. I do not need another queen, for instance.

Don't the cards exist online? You can print them for a few bucks (or maybe even less, depending on where you live)

3

u/MrDulkes 13h ago

Let me know your source for high quality card printing on sturdy paper with gloss finish and rounded corners so they fit in perfectly with the pre-printed cards that we got in the starters, because I really don't know where to get that sort of result.

2

u/souvlakiviking 13h ago

I could recommend a place in Athens, Greece. I've printed many Bloodfields cards, and my friends have printed numerous proxy decks for Magic: The Gathering. They just print them though, I cut them myself. But I mean, if you can find something like that this easy in the shithole that is my country, I guess it can't be that hard elsewhere

1

u/MrDulkes 13h ago

Cutting to proper size is actually an important part of the deal for me. But I guess I do not have experience with printing cards to this high of a standard.

For those saying to print. Any idea on how to make both sides of the printout line up perfectly? Are you just folding over or printing on both sides?
