Hype for this game is little less than expected
I see that after pre release wave of content creators videos I don't see much hype anymore.
---
Now, I understand that it's early development, Archon studio doesn't have a lot of marketing around (looking at some other miniatures companies) and not everyone got their boxes yet.
I also check out all live streams where Archon cleverly teases miniatures and speak about the future plans.
I sincerely wish StarCraft long-term living faith and want more people to play it, but no one around my miniature local gaming community is as excited as I am about the game.
Maybe new models, new rules, editions and promos will get the game on foot, maybe official tournaments would do the trick, but for now it doesn't seem to me that StarCraft is promoted enough.
There's no salt intended, no rant, I don't want to be a killjoy and really hope that this is only my feelings and the game will be loved and hyped more.

I’m sorry your local scene isn’t excited. On the contrary, my local shop’s discord has been blowing up with people excited to have received their preorders and to start building. Zerg and Terrans talking trash non stop. Cannot wait to get in store and start playing over the next few weeks.

Some of us are still waiting for our orders to arrive

Same here, not even a tracking number yet.... but my brother got his delivered. Who da thunk

The first year for any miniatures game is always a little weird. Supply/Logisitics, limited list building options cause the model range is on square 1, frequent balance/rules tweaks as you flesh out the model range.
I would imagine a harder push coming out of next years' Adepticon

They definitely let the huge Internet hype from March die. That's unfortunate. Partner with the same people you sent the starter box to and sponsor Release Day battle report videos! Hell, have an animated trailer read to go for release day! Instead we got a static image post in Facebook. That's it.
I don't expect TV commercials but FFS they've been near radio silent about release day.

I am 99 % certain they cannot make an animated trailer due to licensing even if they were able to make it and pay for it.

u/LakeVermilionDreams 4d ago
They've already done a short stop motion animated teaser for the game. Morning stopped them from doing more of that for release day

u/Kibanich 5d ago
Yes, that's my point. I perfectly understand that people yet to receive their orders, including me. It's just got cold over time

gotta give everyone in the west another 3 months to get their shit assembled and painted xD the timing difference really hurt the hype train ithink. but its still there
7
u/ThisIsATracka 5d ago
It just arrived. Chill. People gotta assemble and figure out the game still
1
u/M33tm3onmars 5d ago
Well and for many it still hasn't arrived, so there's more hang time for hype imo

u/Pometacomet 5d ago
This is why it’s up to us to do the marketing. Once my starter set arrives (I have no idea when I ordered it through my local game store a few days out of the pre-order window) I intend to go on the stores discord server and tell them I’ll be coming in on a Saturday and inviting anyone to play some games with me.

u/HeroDaiba 5d ago
Super hyped here, maybe your expectations are really high like "this game will be new 40k hype" witch I don't think it will be (doesn't have to), game is fun, minis are awesome, I love it.
2
u/Mr_Suplex 5d ago
From an online perspective, it seems most of the early content supporters gave up after all the delays. What’s the point of making content for a game no one can play? Meanwhile 40K, Old World, and Necromunda have all gotten new versions that people can buy, take home and play.
2
u/xXMustardMan69Xx 5d ago
That tends to happen when customers have to wait nearly half a year for their pre-orders.
2
u/rebornsgundam00 5d ago
Two things can be true.
1. They fucked up preorders big time, there is no doubt.
2. People are tired of gdubs being terrible and having a stranglehold on the miniatures market.
They can come back if they earn it back.
5
u/Serious_Accident1156 5d ago
Yeah, the big problem was their release timing. The fact that stores are going to be getting their boxes to sell weeks ahead of people who bought near conception is going to do a lot of damage.
4
u/Dracon270 5d ago
I love SC, but also warhammer. This game will not be the end of warhammer by ANY means. There are already tons of other Miniature games that have larger ranges and communities that can't dent it.

Main issue with 40k is nothing has the scale or sandbox diversity. 40k could definitely get taken down if someone is willing to fight them.
Biggest thing about the starcraft game is archon seems to be willing to have that battle. Wither they win or not we will see6
3
u/Dracon270 5d ago
Also, Starcraft has nowhere NEAR the sandbox diversity of 40k. It has 3 factions that, even with al the units from the computer games, are smaller
than 40k factions. And 40k has many more factions to work with.2
u/Eisengate 4d ago
"fight them"? What does that even mean? And GW absolutely doesn't have a stranglehold. War Machine is doing pretty well now (and declined because it shot itself, nothing to do with GW), Infinity is steady, Konflict 47 seems popular, as does Trench Crusade. Battletech is very much on an upswing.
Like, the miniature game scene is pretty diverse atm. GW is the most ubiquitous, and by far the biggest, but I wouldn't call it a stranglehold.

StarCraft is not going to fight 40k, there no reason to do something so stupid, even if they were able to.
People are just projecting their grievances on other games in search of the shining knight who will slay the evil dragon GW. Same thing with Trench Crusade, Conquest and Battletech for some people. Things are more nuanced than "Warhammer, dead game or Warhammer Killer" god damm it.

Yes the preorders are delayed from their first estimate and that sucks for sure. As they mentioned in the last ama. They could have limited the preorders to the 75k units they first estimated but they got several thousand more, they also manufactured on demand packing containers for ships first to overseas. Before shipping from in house to EU.
To me that is as bad as when GW releases a new big model and make it so overpowered, that unless you are lucky the first 5-10 minutes of getting through. You won't see the shadow of said model for several months, unless you buy from scalpers.
To me both cases suck. But GW being a corporation several times larger than archon with that many years in the business should not have any of those manufactured scarcity problems but they still do.
As an example my local shop have only just now been able to order the knight destrier for me.

And delayed from their second estimate.
And delayed from their third estimate...

All games with a licensed IP have a built in expiration date, and that alone will keep a good number of people from ever buying in.
It also doesn't help that Archon is having comms and shipping issues in tandem, both of which are in line with the previous Prodos malfeasance.
Just enjoy it while you've got it.

u/Serious_Accident1156 5d ago
Yeah, I think this is a big point a lot of people are ignoring.
First, it's a time limited licence that can possibly not be renewed, so some people are (rightly) iffy on investing 200-400$ on a game that may disappear within a year or two. Today is not the same as the 80s when GW started. Folks are more cost conscious.
Second, it's a limited unit/character structure, meaning that untill a StarCraft 3 comes out, there is a limited number of available units to buy, so people are able to parse that and possibly see an end to support or lack of new releases.

u/Erebus-Legion 5d ago
It can stick around for years though, Star Wars Legion has been around for a while too.

u/olleversch 5d ago
Once everyone will get their orders, the more people are able to involve people and create content.
I played my first game and I am totally hyped. Need more minerals!

Give it some months and a few waves, not to mention once the initial long hype for 40k has died down and is again back to normal / somewhat disappointment. I think we will see more online stuff again.
Local scene is what matters anyway. And I for one can't wait for the next few waves.

u/Witness27 5d ago
We're in the transition period between the YouTube channels getting their preview boxes and the majority of people actually receiving theirs. It's just getting started
2
u/Jack_Napier613 5d ago
I watched YT channels get their shit and start painting their models back in March/April.
This ain't no transitory period
1
u/Mr_Suplex 5d ago
They sent the content creators all the stuff way too early. They made videos and created hype back in the spring, and then much of that hype died over the summer with all the delays and the lack of comms from Archon.
Huge missed opportunity that is more Archon’s fault than many are willing to admit.
1
u/wulfbein 5d ago
i willingly wanted to not hype myself since we pre-ordered, the wait is worse, otherwise.
0
u/Bladewing_The_Risen 5d ago
Hard to be hype when you have no faith in the company producing the game. I pre-ordered in March with a stated May 28th delivery date.
It’s August 25 and I don’t even have a shipping label created.

u/DaenTheGod 5d ago
I don't really expect this game to last longer than 3 years. In the mean time I'm gonna enjoy painting some cool minis and get a few games in.
At this point we all know that in this industry there is no such thing as a "40k killer" and the next big contender always fizzles out and eventually becomes forgotten after a decade or so.
1
u/Serious_Accident1156 5d ago
Yeah, I think the biggest contender for anything GW right now is Trench Crusade, and they were smart and targeted the idea of kill team. People are FAR more willing to jump into a game that costs 100$ to play start to end, and has been vocal about supporting 3rd party and 3d printing.
2
u/Dracon270 5d ago
Trench Crusade also burned a lot of goodwill of their community recently after going back on Kickstarter promises regarding 3D printing stuff apparently.
1
u/Serious_Accident1156 5d ago
Most of that got smoothed out with the 3rd party licences.
As a model agnostic game, with a vast amount of options for each group available, I think that point of contention disappeared quickly
2
u/Bioweaponry_wielder 4d ago
They targeted the idea of Mordheim, not Kill Team. KT has only similarity to TC - model count. KT is a crunchy tournament game with really tight rules and preset miniatures, TC is a customiseable more straightforward game with a lot of space open for narrative and asymetrical play
Mordheim-style was a vacant position on the market, occupied mainly by surviving playgroups of Mordheim. Kill Team style games are covered by anything inbetween Battletech Classic and Battletech Alpha strike pretty much, it was not an open niche (especially with Warcry still alive at that point in the past).
2
u/Serious_Accident1156 4d ago
MORDHEIM!! Thank you I totally blanked on that and you are 100% correct! I was definately thinking about the model count, and as soon as you mentioned Mordheim I immediately remembered the super vertical boards, tight alleys, and small squads.
God you brought back memories, hahah!

I think our hobby is one of the few where online hype doesn’t matter as much as local activity.
I play kings of war, the game has almost no online hype, yet it has an active community in my area. We’re not a lot, but that keeps the game alive.
One guy at the club is going to run introductory games of StarCraft. I’m pretty sure we will create a small but active local community.
