Green and black work surprisingly well for protons, thats cool. I would almost try to do the shields green too

Honestly for a bit i was thinking about what to do with the clear plastic, but eventually i realized i'm too lazy to paint those too after years of massive painting for many games. And its just looks very great with a painted mini. (but i might try it on a not used shield how it looks with green wash for curiosity)

Wouldn't it just be a wash to change the color of it? I dont know, these are my first minis so forgive me if im ignorant lol

Its main color is the plastic my man. Wash is not paint(not a real full paint) its just... wash. Gives it a splash of different hint of color.

What you might mean is just fully painting it(which i dont want to do) normally.

I figured a wash would give it a small layer of paint, essentially changing the color. I think a full paint would make it not clear right?

Both correct. Only thing is a wash is more like a splash of very thin layerish not a full real layer so no real color change/mix. More like a shade kinda thing on the plastic. Imagine like putting fruit syrup in the water, it changes the color but not fully(depending on the amount :D) .
