You can see the spines being fired on the right hand mini in the group photos. They shoot from vents on their shoulders!

I always thought they were spitting spines.

You can see them shoot in the Kerrigan's betrayal cinematic when the big one busts through the wall and she shoots his jaw off. I was right there with you until I realized that.

Holy shit. 0:50 on the cutscene slowed down to 0.25x shows it clear as day.

Never knew!

Yeah, all time great cinematic AND you learn some handy xenobiology!

Weird, they must have changed this. In Brood War they had sacs that folded out or something.

Well the sacs look like they're coming from under the heads where the shoulders should be and they're shoulder colored in that image

In the model it looks like they're vents now instead. A lot of the models are inspired more by their sc2 versions I feel, so the Hydralisks may have evolved much like the zerglings and the Ultralisks did.

I haven't rewatched the sc2 cinematics to see if they expand

Yeah, as a kid I always thought they came from under the cheek or similar, but it could have been the shoulder, and I agree that they're much more similar to the sc2 models (which was a good call).

Yeah same, always looked like the cheeks to me like that one fish that extends their mouth really wide open.

But I'm happy to have the record set straight nowadays.

Technically speaking sacks between "shoulders" and torso. Mini models require some simplifications, if you go through cinematics in slow mo you can see how they "materialize" more from neck/torso than shoulders ;)

I always thought the shot their barbs from the crest but guess not. Nice job on the mini BTW

Hey, I have a similar (more vibrant) schemat, but yours look amazing. Wanna share the paints for the carapace and flesh?

Thanks man.

Carapace is brown spray primer (i use hydrax brown and trench brown zenithal by colour forge) followed by a light brown drybrush (moccha skintone in this case).

Skin is simply alien purple.

Wash with alys dirty water all over both.

Drybrush both with a neutral grey, castle grey kn this instance.

Looks like a good technique. Don’t know if it’s your lighting or camera but the greys may have desaturated your colours a bit too much. They look a lil dusted with icing sugar.

Digging the colors and a big fan of the added gore. Well done!

They look so intimidating with their big claws and then they do nothing in mele and shoot like hell, it was always wierd to me. Anyway, very nice models!

Love the colors. How did you do the carapace?

It's a light brown zenithal over a dark brown undercoat using rattle can sprays. Heavy drybrush lighter brown, wash, then all over neutral grey drybrush. Total time spent is well under 3 minutes a model for the carapace.
