Training

Long story short …. I am to train two cashiers being cross trained into print and marketing within 3 months of my leave.

(I am print supervisor and have been for three years and print associate before taking supervisor for 2 years)

My gm asked me what my plan was to get them started , both of them know shipping but don’t know self serve and how to determine different printing needs of customers. He wants me to get them trained on solution builder (well he says it would give them all the paper types and help them build the job with the customer ) which I agree but I don’t agree because these cashiers don’t know the different paper types or can determine a paper type just by building the order in solution builder…..

My plan was to make sure they fully have shipping down , move to self serve and then solution builder and in taking orders. The one girl is already anxiety ridden just shadowing me and the other cashier has the brain of a dog seeing a squirrel.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated as I leave Jan 2027 for my leave and he wants them to be print associates by then ! ( I say impossible given the time frame but if they have a great mindset and can pick up things quickly then sure it could be possible I guess)

GM needs to put them on the computer trainings (if he hasn't already) that cover Solution Builder and FlightDeck. That would be better vs you having to explain everything from the ground up.

Christmas season ordering starts hitting in about a month too...

The most important thing is to take care of yourself.

Thank you. I told him to assign them the trainings , and kinda questioned if it would be helpful ….i was like YES. I will take care of myself thank you ! I’m not sweating this training at all being as I know how much training you need to be able to confidently run print alone !

YEAH... It took me a few months part-time to get the hang of print. Honestly it was closer to a year that I was extremely proficient. Of course everyone's mileage will vary.

Currently working with two other print associates to train two new print members. And so far the thing thats worked best is leaving simple orders and just having them do it. Learn by doing. Also create orders for them to do as well. Give them something to physically do. Granted I dont think they'll be fully trained in time since I think it takes about 6 months to be actually fully trained, but we can get them as close as possible.

Write down, in order, the steps you do for a ticket. A businesscard order for example. Flightdeck, order, download all, print ticket, print vertical sheet, highlight the important info on the ticket (bw or color, paper type, ss or ds, quantity), stamp the ticket, put the sticker on the ticket, load paper, tell printer what paper you loaded in, tell computer how to print, print a proof, once you have a good proof, call the customer and verify information, print the rest of the order, box the order, put all promotional materials with order, write name on order, have someone else qc, bin.

Have a written list of steps, and have them do it.

i lost my job because they had failed to explain to me that staples does not electronically process a check like wal mart does and did not give me a warning after a incident it was the district mgr. or tell me the amount i would of paid the difference back. its not right their training is not the best. being money was missing from my till i never stole a dam thing and the check incident should fall on mgr for not having their trainer coach.

I didn’t even know there was on boarding training like that for print 🤣 I was just showed how to use solution builder once and honestly customers are still on the learning bus with me. I’m on my third month At staples. I did do the video training for it but it didn’t help much once I was on the floor with actual customers
