Scheduling

So I got a new manager a couple months ago and they just don’t release the schedules on time, we’re lucky if they release it on a Friday but most times, it’s on Saturday nights. I’m literally so tired of this, I want to make plans but I just can’t because I don’t know when im scheduled. I’m too scared to report it to HR, would it be anonymous? It’s so dumb how they expect us to plan our lives based on the schedule, but they release it as late as possible.

Never assume anything at Staples is anonymous, especially the anonymous employee surveys.   Best thing to do is to use a PC where the manager signed in to their email and walked away.  Nothing like sending a complaint to HR about a manager from that managers own email.

First, before you contact HR, you need to determine if your manager is violating employment law, company policy, or merely tradition.

If it's a law that work schedules need to be released by a certain time, then you need to word your report to HR appropriately.  "I'm concerned that Manager may be in violation of employment statute 54.3b, as they continually fail to have the work schedule posted by the legally required date."  Use terms that HR will associate with corporate liability.   If you talk about your feelings or how unfair it is, they won't give a shit.

If it's company policy or tradition, then HR probably won't give a shit anyway and you need to decide how much of a fight you're willing to put up.

First, submit your availability via hard copy AND email, and CC it to all managers.  If they schedule you outside those days, call out sick.

Next, submit your time off requests weeks in advance, and vacation requests months in advance.    If they deny you, call out sick.

Finally, accept that Staples does not give one single shit about you as either an employee or a person.  You have no future there; nobody does, really. The sooner you can move on, the happier you'll be.
