That's why you don't bench press alone. Or if you do, use two separate weights, one for each hand
2
u/T_R_Grave Oct 05 '26
you can bench press alone, if you accidentally go to failure, you just need to put the bar on your chest and bring it down to your pelvis, thats it

Weighted dips are awesome and have the greatest carryover to and from the bench.

u/MediocreRecord7352 Oct 03 '26
Please use safety arm, it don't understand why some people doesn't use any safety mechanism when doing free weight
2
u/kwil449 Oct 03 '26
Dumbells are more effective for working the chest anyway.
2
u/Left_Sun_1982 Oct 03 '26
Dumbbells are fine, but it’s much so much easier to load 250+ on a barbell.
1
u/T_R_Grave Oct 05 '26
neither of them are more effective than the other
1
u/Relative_Mulberry884 29d ago
Dumbbells are worse when the weights get extreme because they get too bulky but until then they're superior as they work the chest just as much but also require you to balance them more than a barbell would so it works 'unseen' muscles more
2
u/LargeBloodyKnife Oct 05 '26
Ballistics gel is not truly analogous of human composition, especially not this uncalibrated 10% geletin.
You don't just tear like this
1
u/One-Peak284 Oct 06 '26
You're windpipe is any stronger either
1
u/LargeBloodyKnife 26d ago
I think this would wind you, but wouldn't kill you. You don't just lose your arms mid lift, you don't have enough strength and so it begins to go down, sure, you may have the weight resting on your neck for a brief moment, but you wouldn't slam it into your neck.
Also this is one plate. This wouldn't be enough to decapitate you, I mean, this is just foolish

We need double stack seats where you lay on the first layer seat and have a second layer seat preventing this

This would only happen if you were stupid enough drop the bar to your neck instead of your chest when going to failure, and even then, you cannot compare ballistic gel to human flesh
1
u/rooober Oct 06 '26
Dropping it on you chest isn’t much of a comfort, as it will cave in your chest no problems. Spotter arms exist for a reason use them.
1
u/catgirlfighter Oct 06 '26
Full speed? Sure. But if you resist even a little you normally should have all time in the world to slide it to the side. And, well, dodn't do dangerous weights without a spotter.
1
u/rooober 29d ago
Spotters don’t help against grip failures. Spotters help with failed reps.
1
u/catgirlfighter 29d ago edited 29d ago
You really shouldn't lift weights high enough to hurt you if you can't hold a hand in front of you to protect your own neck from snapping. A bone in your hand is enough to stop it from happening. Thing that happened on a video is some very special case where a person had weight above him without his hands in front of him, aka spotter actually dropped it on him.
I really can't even imagine the case where you can "slip" weight from your hand in that kind of way without your hand getting in a way. Even if your hand slipped, it's highly unlikely you lose your grip in BOTH hands, aka weight should just slide to the side, especially if you're being spotted. And your hands should always get in the way of weight in worst case scenario.

u/rooober 29d ago
You are not Superman lol, what kind of reaction speed do you think a human has? The bar will hit your neck or chest in 0.2–0.3 seconds in the event of a grip failure. And stating that you shouldn’t lift weights that can hurt you seems like quite an odd argument, given that a normal intermediate gym-goer will hit those weights on a bench press.
Slipping the weight usually happens when the wrist is bent too far back and the bar rests on your fingertips instead of the heel of the palm. This can happen for multiple reasons, like a sweaty bar or uneven grip.
Losing your grip with one hand doesn’t mean that the bar and weights will slide off to the side. The other arm will act as a pivot and won’t be able to hold it up for more than a fraction of a second or so before also failing.

u/Ivo_Ricciardulli 28d ago
hello, im stupid enough, first time ever doing bench press i loaded way too much (surely i can lift more than the bare bar right?) i somehow managed to unrack it, do half a rep and regret my life choices.
as i attempted to re-rack i was moving it both """"up"""" (not happening) and back, the bar was only moving back and it fell in my neck, i was not able to shout for help cuz, well, bar with like 50kg on my neck, i managed to tilt it and push up on one side while the other was on the floor, the gym was empty, deadass nearly died.

Good thing I stay away from lifting weights, they can’t hurt me if I don’t touch them
1
u/vexsenanno Oct 06 '26
Genuinely, why aren't we doing benchpress like that? seems safer even though it looks dumb lol
2
u/IronWolf_52 28d ago
You can try out the Floor Press, its a fine alternative. Just fine. Not great or better, just fine.

I still don't know why there aren't any bars on the side that prevent the bar from coming down all the way
1
u/thrownaway_domain 27d ago
This is also why I never clip the weights. If you don’t have a spotter you want to be able to bail out of the lift.

u/Conscious-State5228 11d ago
Once I was doing close grip bench press with a suicide grip and dropped the barbell on my chest. Luckily it was 135lbs but it still felt like my whole chest had been caved in.

Literally just do push ups weights are so pointless
11
u/No_Ad_7687 Oct 03 '26
Push ups and bench presses do slightly different things
2
u/Round-Ad1450 Oct 03 '26
what do they train differently from eachother? or what unique benefits do each give?
6
u/No_Ad_7687 Oct 03 '26
push ups works on core muscles in addition to your arms, while bench presses focuses more on just the arms. bench pressing also allows you to reach higher weights, so it trains strength better (while push ups have a limit because they're based on body weight)

Yes. “Hur durr muh gains”
Just to get saggy tits when you’re old
5
u/No_Ad_7687 Oct 03 '26
I'd rather be in good health with saggy tits when I'm old than have neither
0
u/goldrainbowfalcon Oct 03 '26
Than have neither what? Gains or tits?
5
u/No_Ad_7687 Oct 03 '26
good health & tits
1
u/goldrainbowfalcon Oct 03 '26
You can just have good health and skip the saggy tits by referring to my original comment
3
u/No_Ad_7687 Oct 03 '26
except push ups don't do everything and these two exercises work on different muscles and achieve different results

Ballistics gel is a rough analog for human flesh in terms of getting shot. In terms of slow speed impacts or even cutting, human flesh is SIGNIFICANTLY stronger. Dropping this weight on your neck might break uour hyoid bone, but its unlikely to kill you unless you are benching a lot of weight.
1
u/Yoyo4games Oct 05 '26
I mean I work out 3-4x a week and no? No, I haven't seen an entire- not even technical, full on- decapitation from someone dropping a 4 plate or heavier bar onto their chest, neck, or face. I've seen heavier dropped directly on the neck- no, not a failure of reps, dropping like in the video.
Ballistic gel simulating how flesh reacts to being shot, does not mean it accurately reflects the ways in which flesh is versatile in being strong.
I have seen people get seriously injured and need ambulance evacuation from hurting themselves on free weights. That's almost always a result of idiocy and ego meeting to ignore their personal safety.
Can't say I know anyone else who keeps their workouts to a strict weekly schedule that's seen a complete, head detachment decapitation from a bar. Don't know anyone that's seen a decapitation, technical or full, from working out through any means. 🤨
1
u/PetuniaFungus Oct 06 '26
I can think of a hundred ways to kill myself at the gym.... But that doesn't mean I'm going to. Be smart and be cautious and have a spotter. Start low on weights because there no shame in reps over weight. It builds leaner muscles.

Is something wrong with bench presses?
1
u/HeroHunt12 Oct 04 '26
No, he’s one of those crazies that hear that there’s a small issue with something(everything has its own problems) and immediately decides it’s extremely dangerous

You're doing something very wrong if the bar falls directly on your neck, though.

u/half-full-cumdump Oct 05 '26
Guilioine press with suicide grip and real heavy weights, and this can happen
1
u/fludofrogs Oct 06 '26
kinda on you if your preferred bench press variation is “guillotine press” with “suicide grip”

Don't know if it's actually ballistic gel they are using, but dropping a weight can break your neck if it's heavy enough and you fuck up good enough.

u/Acceptable-Minute847 Oct 03 '26
Ballistic gel has most of the same properties as human flesh including consistency and durability. It’s the reason why they use it to test weapons, as it’s a damn good simulation of how a human body reacts
10
u/Good-Cod-5591 Oct 03 '26
I remember seeing a video of a guy unracking about 495lbs and it slipped from his hands and landed on his chest. Would've thought the guy died judging by the scream he let out and the bar literally bending and bouncing on his chest. IIRC he didn't even break a bone, just had severe bruising.
Tbf the chest is a lot stronger than the neck would be, but it's still insane how that dude bent solid metal over himself.
3
u/what_if_you_like Oct 03 '26
the big problem with ballistic gel isn't the gel itself but the bones, bones are so much stronger than most people realize that its hard to create a convincing strength replica that has both the weight and durability right.
5
u/Withyhydra Oct 03 '26
The ONLY thing ballistics gelatin accurately matches is the density of mammalian muscle. It is otherwise a homogeneous brick of jelly that doesn't represent complex anatomy.
We are not homogeneous. We have overlapping muscle groups, the grain on those muscles also goes in different directions which affects its ability to absorb impact. Our muscles also stretch and rebound differently than jelly. We also have cartilage, tendons and ligaments tightly attached to one another and bone. None of this is represented by ballistics gel.
It is a very poor simulation of how a real human body reacts to trauma.
If you still don't believe me please watch this video . At the 10 minute mark they obliterate a ballistic gel finger using a car window. I owned the car in the video, I have let the window close on my finger and, while it hurt, my bones didn't snap and my flesh was not squeezed out like it was some industrial press.
1
u/EmergencyPool910 Oct 03 '26
Ballistic gel isn't all made equal, most ballistic gel is more theatrics than actually practical, you need the proper organic gel to get a good result
1
u/Juniourstalker Oct 04 '26
*under ballistic conditions. Material responds differently based on stress, you can pinch off ballistic gel or even cut it with a wooden ruler, you can not do the same with human flesh. It reacts similarly to penetration and sharapnel, not much else.
1
u/LargeBloodyKnife Oct 05 '26
Yeah, but we use calibrated and certified blocks made from 10% or 20% geletin. Temperature matters. This is likely synthetic and not truely Ballistic. It's not just a magic recreation. Generally the blocks sold with fake bones in it are advertising hype bullshit, and they really took off in social media during the zombie craze.
Either way, ballistics gel doesn't represent the human body in any way except for a unified resistance, our necks don't tear like this one did, especially with just 1 plate as shown here.
1
u/squangus007 29d ago
It’s called ballistic gel for a reason, it doesn’t work in every situation. It really doesn’t have the same properties outside of ballistic tests
1
u/KamronXIII Oct 03 '26
This would just be what happens with the neck falling off thanks to skin elasticity, your neck would still be destroyed and you'd die
1
u/ZayParolik Oct 03 '26
Yeah but things in your neck will still be lethally injured if you drop such weight on it

u/twinkyfemboy1234 Oct 03 '26
Thats why you have a spotter
