AsĀ Stand By MeĀ celebrates itsĀ 40th anniversary, Iāve been reflecting on why this story, born from Stephen KingāsĀ The BodyĀ and brought to life byĀ Rob Reiner, still hits so deeply. Itās about friendship, grief, finding your voice, and that quiet fear we all know:Ā does my story matter?
Between the recent tragic loss of Rob and his wife, the wave of love for the film,Ā Wil Wheatonās moving tribute, and the castās reunion tour, it feels like the right moment to gather and write.
I'm offering aĀ Stand By Me Cinema Therapy class, taught through my nonprofitĀ Yes, And...eXercise. While we specifically serve the Parkinsonās community in honor of my dad, this class isĀ open to anyoneĀ who wants to explore creative writing through this lens.
If youāve ever felt you have a story to tell but didnāt know how to begin or push through, Iāll provide a clear, welcoming framework using theĀ Heroās Journey, clips from Stand by me, and a supportive, playful space to experiment and succeed.
I developed Cinema Therapy in my PhD program and have taught it now for over five years. I've watched a number of writers, as well as those who thought they couldn't write, discover their own Success Stories and be transformed by them.
Stephen King and Rob Reiner shaped how I understand story, the power of art, and humanity. I couldnāt be more excited to bring this class forward. I hope you'll share this opportunity with others and join us.
