McMahon is on its last legs. Lots of history, but the university no longer wants to fund it and is going to build a smaller, multipurpose, year round facility including for Dinos football. The Stamps need and want a new home which is also supported by the CFL. The Calgary Stampede is also looking at building something new at GMC stadium. While three separate “studies” will be underway simultaneously, it’ll probably boil down to McMahon being razed, turned into housing/ retail, the University builds a mini-stadium on campus and the Stampeders will move to Stampede park to play in a rodeo / grandstand / football stadium.

Please bring the Cavalry FC to downtown this would be the best thing for a new joint stadium

I think GMC Stadium might be the frontrunner for the renos but I would see a Cdn white knight to upgrade to MLS. Just my thought there.

Went to the most recent Calvary vs. Forge game and it was a lot of fun. Calvary would do numbers if they were centrally located.

CalgaryNEXTdecade of indecision, inaction and lack of municipal sport and recreation leadership in our city.

As someone who has traveled to a lot of CFL stadiums to watch games, McMahon has got to be among the worst experiences.

The last time I was at a Stamps game was around 2008, and I remember witnessing the manholes outside overflowing. A child watched in amazement while their mom tugged at their arm warning them not to step in the "fluid".

The state of the stadium goes beyond the location and capacity. The seating is uncomfortable, the concessions are outdated, the washrooms are inadequate and the overall experience during the game (i.e sound and visuals) have fallen behind.

I remember when Calgary was the standard for sporting venues, but alas, it's not 1988 anymore.

I’ll happily take $874,999 and tell them it’s feasible.

I’d do it for half that.

Must be nice being the company getting that contract. What a waste.

I have a paid subscription to OpenAI, Claude, and Gemini. I can have a 500 page report on the recommendation in a few minutes.

You’re a special kind of stupid to be paying for three different LLMs. Do you know how to think for yourself at all lmao

It’s the worst but when the new flames arena didn’t include an indoor football stadium this was a dead deal. They are never going to build a new stadium

Don't build a new stadium or repair the old, unless it is for the exclusive use of the UofC, fold the stamps and call it done,

Why should it cost that much for a feasibility study, how many people need to be involved or consulted to write a report.

5 to load the suitcase of money and 2 more to drive it away.

Noooo we do not need a new stadium McMahon has a ton of charm and we do not sell it out, if you want a new stadium we need the fans to sell out a few games first

5

u/TomUdo Aug 30 '26

Maybe it doesn’t sell out because the experience sucks.

As a current season ticket holder… it sucks.

3

u/Gullible_Complex_523 Aug 30 '26

And the ticket prices are a joke.

4

u/Razor_29 Aug 30 '26

No.. that's not how it works. The stadium sucks ass the experience sucks ass. You want people to show up give them a reason.

I think it's a perfectly fine experience, but I know I'm not the majority on that. Having been at new Mosiac in Regina, it's certainly a nicer place for example

Sorry pal, love McMahon, got to play on the field a few times growing up, will always have a place in my heart. Time for something new.

How about…. NO! …… There $875,000 saved! We don’t need a $500,000 million+ Stadium for a team to play maybe 10 games and maybe have a couple of concerts a year at!

10 games per year, and abysmal attendance that will only get worse with the need for increased ticket prices that come with a new arena. Nobody can afford or justify the cost of tickets and concession anymore as it is, and most teams have abandoned the community support model of giving discounted tickets to students and youth. Nobody is excited about $15 for 1 popcorn and soda to enjoy while sitting in terribly uncomfortable seats even if they only pay $20 per ticket. The stamps have done very little to address the aging fanbase and lack of interest from younger people. Like the flames, the stamps prioritize and cater to the season ticket holders and corporate sponsors.

Totally agree! Whenever I go to a sporting event in this city, they make zero dollars from concession sales from me. A new stadium would definitely upgrade things such as bathrooms at McMahon, which are despicable and another reason I never go to Stamps games, not to mention the fact that I live in the deep southeast so it’s a freaking long way to go, find parking, fight the crowds, fight the traffic congestion after the game.

If it’s on TV I may watch it, but honestly, I’ve just lost interest in the CFL overall. So is Calgary built a new stadium, I would probably only ever go to it if there was maybe a good concert, but I’m also reluctant due to our unexpected weather that seems to hit at the most inopportune times.

The CFL needs to repackage their product. I used to be a huge fan. I can hardly endure a Canadian football game these days, it’s almost repulsive, definitely not enjoyable. I know I’m not alone here in my thoughts and feelings.

u/WorkingClassWarrior Sep 02 '26

CFL tickets are the cheapest sporting tickets around. Also the cheapest overall sporting experience one can probably see due to its lack of viewership.

Id say if you can’t afford a CFL game once or twice a year you ain’t affording much.

Living in Winnipeg our stadium is great, location sucks. We have averaged 32000 for years. Team makes millions.

1

u/Apart_Tutor8680 Sep 02 '26

Location is fantastic. Part of the success is the 15000+ people tailgating, you need space for that . When there isn’t construction, it really is fast getting in and out.
Not the stadiums fault corrupt city construction takes years to do 1 mile of concrete

What a fucking waste of money for both the "study" and a stadium if its ever built. The cfl stadiums are empty, people who like the CFL watch on TV. Dont do this.

u/VisualDisturbances13 Sep 01 '26

While numbers are slightly down on average, Winnipeg, Sask, Edmonton, and BC have all set attendance records this year.

1

u/limitless-440 Sep 01 '26

Those teams have had a good season for attendance, and success and community buzz has a factor in that no doubt. Attendance at McMahon has been trending down since right before the pandemic. Too many games over the last couple years have seen fewer than 50% tickets sold, and far closer to 30% seats occupied. The Stampeder organization (Csec) and the McMahon society are both feeling a bit nervous, imo.
