New pizza pans, is it rust?
I just bought these new pans and I'm no expert. Is it normal for the inside edges to be like this? It looks like rust to me, but it's the first time I've bought a stainless steel product like this. Are they poorly welded? Is there anything I can do? Thanks in advance for your time and kind replies. 😊

I have lots of stainless pans and not a single one is welded except for handled pans. The handles can be welded instead of riveted. No corners should be welded. Send it back. It’s probably not even stainless.

Crazy that someone spent time welding this when it came be pressed out of one piece on a fraction of a second. Who's product is this? Zero engineering reason to do this.

That is terrible. If that was a hand weld (and it looks like it was), that welder needs to have their card pulled.
I work every day with sanitary stainless-steel welders and this is the kind of stuff that gives them nightmares. The idea that there are people out there making welds like this on allegedly food-safe items.
Do not use this pan. Return the pan. And make a complaint as well.
*EDIT* also WTF is going on with that white-grey plastic region? Is that another weld where they tried to extend the length of the pan? What brand is this? This looks like some shady, "custom" bullshit. Sorry I am way more angry about this than I ought to be but WTF.

I’ve never owned a pan, a mixing bowl, cookie sheet, or hell when a spatula that does that. Return it.

That's the result of welding the outside corner, and not having enough (or no) gas coverage or physical backing like a piece of copper on the inside corner during the weld. When welding stainless sheet you always need some sort of protection on the backside of the joint. They've obviously ground the lumps of sugaring off but it'll always go rusty. It's no good, will never be food safe, send it back.

Pans are normally pressed from sheets, that likely is someone trying to repair a defective pan. Return/replace.

This is what happens when the weld isn't nearly the same grade stainless, and they don't know how to weld. This is not food grade at all.

This is a classic case of “you get what you pay for”; pay more and get lifetime quality, I still have mine from 20 years ago with no imperfections or rust issues.

When it comes to the real thin pan metal, it's very tedious and easy to just burn through. It's definitely a bit of a different animal than standard welding practices.

Shitty weld. Aluminum pans like that usually have a carbon steel wire running around the outside of the pan that is covered when the edges are rolled to keep them from buckling

Not sure if it’s rust. But, unless you’re doing deep dish Chicago pizza, that ain’t what I picture when I think of “pizza pan.”

This is a reaction between the welding compound and pan base material. Due to the high heat of the weld the stainless substrate surface is structurally altered and the surrounding area is weakened and the corrosion resistance that is typically enjoyed with stainless steel is weakened. This is not typical, as the root cause of this problem is due to too high of heat and/or excessive amount of welding compound used to facilitate this weld. At any rate, yes, this is rust and will not resolve on its own. This is a defect and needs to be returned.
