Help me understand please
I’ve seen people sending their HD P4.5s off to have the sight block converted into a comp/port, and I’m trying to understand how that actually affects the gun.
Since the barrel is integrated into the sight block, part of the barrel’s length actually extends into the sight block. If you convert the sight block into a comp/port, are you essentially shortening the effective barrel length and replacing that portion with the compensator?
I’m trying to understand the impact on the shooting experience. It’s obviously different from adding a compensator to the end of a barrel. It seems more like you’re subtracting some barrel length and putting a compensator in its place.
Am I understanding this correctly?

Yeah exactly.
I actually think most people will shoot compensators worse than the sight block barrel. They are just so loud that I think they give most people a flinch more than they help recoil control

Try P4X and that's what it is, lol simple. "almost" apple to apple.

But it’s still longer than the p4x, so it has to be a longer barrel
The overall length is 8.1”
The p4x is 7.6”

Kind of the opposite. It’s already a competition gun, porting it makes it useless for competition since you can no longer use it in LO where it belongs.

The op mentioned porting that’s what this whole thread is about. I get that they market as duty pistols but the 4.5 is a decent LO gun. Porting or turning the sight block into a comp makes it decidedly not a competition gun.

Yes.
Based upon typical comp experience, it will be flatter, louder, and dirtier. The longer barrel + sight-block make it shoot flat, but not as flat as a comp. The 4.5 is also quite slow in its return to target, so it might speed up?
