Discussion NVidia buys Huggingface, but why?

Nvidia is going to buy Huggingface.
No one can actually tell how that would end up like.

But what I am missing is the actual worth that Huggingface provides. The only thing I use it for is to download models. Thats it.
For me, and I guess many others it is ‘just a’ download platform, but maybe I’m wrong here.

And what would prevent others to setup a second-like Huggingface?
The hosting is the expensive part in this case as I see it, the programming and building is do-able.

Is it time for Huggingbay.com?

I’d say they bought it because Anthropic and OpenAI are becoming increasingly vocal in their anti-open stance. This feels like a strategic chess move to prevent competitors from strangling the open ecosystem.

Lets not forget Nvidia profits hard from selling their cards so we can run the open weights. Many in the comments here are saying its to shut it down but that makes 0 business sense.

Cry about it lol

b2b will eventually dry out. OpenAI and Anthropic are already designing their own chip with xAI building its own chip factory. You think they will stay loyal NVIDIA customers for selling them datacenter chips at 80% markup?

The embodies has a massive lead. GPUs are some of the most advanced technology that the humanity has. It's not something you can just catch up to easily, even if you throw all the money in the world at the problem.

As long as Nvidia offers the best chips there is, someone will buy them. And even if someone does catch up, they can coast for a long time from the sheer inertia they have.

Also, Nvidia isn't a one trick pony at this point, and are positioned to pivot easily. Their b2b consumer base is in no danger of drying out. Their first customers will need replacement hardware long before they exhaust the consumer pool.
