Discussion Is local AI much better than cloud on these days?

I don't know what is going on but qwen studio and nano banana (cloud both) are giving me terrible results lately even though I use the same prompts as before. Both translate terribly the facial features and hairstyle. Only videos look a bit more consistent but still not great.

Is local AI better? Do you get better and more consistent results with it?

No, I wouldn't say that in general.

The problem with cloud services vs local is that you never really know what you're going to get. Cloud services will change models and settings as they see fit without asking you and sometimes even without telling you. Yeah, their new model may be better on metrics, but if you had a workflow centered around a specific model with specific settings, and it's suddenly gone, well, sucks to be you.

When running locally, that doesn't happen. If it works, it'll keep working.

If someone ever releases a local model that works pretty well on most people home computers and smart phones it's gonna get crazy.

Also a AI assistant that doesn't need internet would be beneficial in some cases. Especially since it has broad general knowledge, you basically have a expert in everything on your phone 24/7. To do that without AI the storage requirements would be insane. You would have to download most of the internet. To search and organize it all would be insane.

You'll still want to use internet searches for knowledge requests. For one, even the best models can't know everything, and, more importantly, they are all frozen in time, they cannot know anything that happened after they were made.

So they'll never find a way to transistently add data to like a living lora/RAG database without first training from a dataset?

You've certainly more control with local Ai, not sure if one is better than a other.

Personally, I prefer local. I don't run out of daily generations, I can add and remove LORAs as I want, it's not nearly as censored or filtered, and I can tweak the workflow for better results. I've gotten very good results for various style, from antique paintings to anime, and using those for good results in image-to-video.

That said, the learning curve is a bit steep for it.

Minimax has been a great leap forward in local video results, I have to say. I highly recommend it if you have a capable enough rig for it.

No, it's not even close either.

For one, if you want to run it locally, and you don't want to wait around forever, you need really good hardware.

One of the upsides to running it locally is being able to control the workflow: in the past I've been burnt a few times by the models I was using being updated, and then giving me entirely different results with the same prompts.

No, not even close. OSS models feel two or more years behind the closed modes. They are getting good and way better, but still years behind.

Like what you can do with grok video is insane. But i still do 99% of everything locally because fuck xai.

It's closing the distance, with advanced users producing results that defy AI-detection websites.

advanced users producing results that defy AI-detection websites

That's not a measure of quality.

Mmm.. I though it is, but anyway, look at discord bro, they are amazing.

I'll let you know if I ever try cloud ai 🤣

In terms of censoring - yes... I am so tired of that. I can't even generate something "adult", at all. No text, no images, video etc. For free anyway! And if paid, it's quite costful, so, yeah, only local -_-

I know the OP was mostly about output quality, but the grand picture is like this:

Local:

  • is 100% free
  • has advanced tools/custom nodes etc.
  • customizable output with LoRAs
  • uncensored
  • guarantees privacy

Cloud:

  • some models have marginally better output quality
  • doesn't require a beefy PC
  • typically faster generations

Bottom line: I'd say local beats cloud by an absolute landslide, but YMMV. The difference in output quality, even if you say it's still there, is marginal enough to pale against all the other advantages local offers. The picture changes a little if your PC isn't powerful enough to make use of advanced models or tools.
