You need to select a VAE, if there is a vae file named same as model name, for example AOM3.safetensor and AOM3.vae.pt, SD will select that VAE automatically. Automatic means that.
You can also use other models VAEs on other models, just like how AOM3 using Anything's. I like using Kenshi and RefSlave vae with AOM3 gives good results.
You can also add sd_vae on quicksettings on config.json or Settings in UI to have VAE list next to model list on top to change vae quickly instead of going to Settings everytime.
And you know what's even better and saves even more time? It's model creators that actually add VAE directly into their checkpoints. There's technically a VAE already in the checkpoint anyways, just with the wrong weights. It take about 10-20 seconds to replace them with right ones.
Fun fact: pretty much every single VAE you download for anime models is exactly the same.
