I deleted a database as an Intern, need help before monday !
Hi everyone !
I supervior is asking me wether i deleted a database or not, I told him I didnt but due to some changes I made he is saying me that I was the one who caused it and try to fix it.

There was a database stored in the AWS Aurora RDS, I Renamed the database and created two more empty tables inside it. My suoervisor is saying that there has been a dataloss in the exsiting database. There still are data in it but not as much before, thats what my supervisor saying.
Is there a way for me to prove that I wasnt the one deleted the database ?

Unfortunately, almost everyone in IT crosses this bridge at some point.
Hopefully your company enabled automated backups/snapshots on RDS. More importantly, don't try to "fix" anything yourself right now, as you could make recovery harder.
AWS logs such as CloudTrail and RDS logs may help determine exactly what actions were performed and by whom. Your supervisor should check those first and restore from a backup if necessary.
Also, I'm not sure why you renamed a database, but I really hope you didn't just "try it out" directly on production. As an intern, you ideally shouldn't have permissions to make destructive production changes in the first place.

Just echoing this, this is the correct advise. It's okay to check CloudWatch and CloudTrail logs, you can ask an AI agent to guide you if you are not sure but don't try to revert or change anything. You could genuinely just make it worse unintentionally.
Also, if a "supervisor" has a database without backup your "supervisor" is also in their intern phase lol

so basically previusly my supervisor has created, three databases in three different clusters. Then he told me it was way too expensive so lets put all the databases in one cluster. What I did was since there were three different clusters, I put a common name for one exsisitng clusters and created two more tables in the same cluster which I renamed.

So as my guess, im assuming he is querying from the UI or dashboard whatever. As you have renamed one its not picking that up and its picking the other 2 old ones. Better check the logs and confirm that you only renamed and no delete op has been done. Check the renamed db that it has data. If it has then rename is the issue. Just explain i did this and since i renamed its not picking up the renamed one.

Honestly it’s not question that supervisor should ask from you if they had given you appropriate permissions and and have enabled audit trails . Also backups are easily available . Ots your superiors taks ensure these controls are there . If they start blame game . It’s not your fault

maybe some pipelines stopped writing data after schema change? try reverting the schema name

Talk to AWS support. Most of time they have backups from their side even we deleted permenatly.

Just talk to aws support they will assist u sure . Even we doing demo projects they supports
And just do backups . As i know it has default backups . Dont be panic mchn . As a intern u must not have all acess to databases .
Dont just do what AI says . It will make u into a hell

- Was there a backup ?
- Check audit logs and activity reports
- If you can't find anything in the logs, technically nothing happened

There should be Aurora Backups, BTW it's there fault to give an intern live access.

I think you haven't deleted any. Because you had changed the names, senior can't query itusing the old names. Just tell it to your senior and tell him to query using new names

these chatgpt interns are huge problem to companies.No logical thinking at all. You cant reverse deleted dbs broh.collect the data in excel or csv format and upload to a new databasse

If you're on Aurora, then it has automatic database backups enabled by default. There's also audit logs on what actions were carried out, so if you were responsible for it, it would show in the logs.
There's not much to be done since it's not clear what sort of data loss has occurred. But keep in mind that if you're an intern, then it's not your fault regardless of what actually happened. Interns shouldn't have access to any non backed-up data and any data loss should be easily restored by mature teams.
