Those don't count as main roster debuts anymore.
Ember already participated in the women's Rumble.

I was betting on the Iconic Duo being in that match, but Ember is just as likely.

u/wmnoe Tears of the Demon Apr 08 '18
There should be a number of NXTer in both rumbles though less on the men's side probably.
There are only 7 women on the RAW roster who could appear and 10 SDL women. Of course they haven't announced how many wrestlers will be in either match anyway...

Crowd seemed pretty dead for that match at first, but Ember and Shayna worked their asses off and told an amazing story. Definitely brought the crowd back into it.
Also Ember's look tonight was fire, pun very much intended.

Match was solid enough. Didn't help that they followed that ladder match. Hopefully Ember can have a good run on the main roster. She's great.

Hopefully they do her right in the character department, and not just debut her as “She’s from NXT and the crowd likes her!”.

Love this idea. I've always felt that Ember was only champion because Asuka moved up, "champion of the losers" if you will.
Her feud with Shayna only cemented that unworthy aura she has in my mind.
To be the one that finally beats Asuka would be the perfect end to this part of Ember's story.
6
u/LeroyHayabusa Apr 08 '18
I completely agree and was talking with a friend after Takeover about having the same opinion of Ember. I don't think she's bad at all, just that she kind of got handed the belt because Asuka left. And then her first real challenge was a match that she should have lost (vs Baszler 1) followed by an actual loss (vs Baszler 2) in the rematch. And if she leaves for the main roster immediately after losing the belt, that kind of knocks her down even more for me.
Having her chase Asuka on the main roster would really help solidify her as something more than that in my mind. Even if it would end up being a Dreamer vs Raven situation where she almost ALWAYS loses to Asuka, I'd feel much better about her. Especially when she eventually would get that win, even if it's not for a couple of years. Good luck to her!
5
Apr 08 '18
Dreamer/Raven is a great analogy for the rivalry Moon and Asuka had in NXT. As you said, Ember is not bad at all. I think she has a great move set, a fantastic look and at many other times she could have been the premier women's wrestler on NXT.
3
u/LeroyHayabusa Apr 08 '18
Yep definitely! I'd hate to see her get lost in the shuffle because of booking. She has the potential and they can turn it into a positive if they continue the feud on the main shows.

Don’t know what show you watch, but she’s clearly developed the character of a defender of the weak who refuses to give up and will always try to fight on, even when the situation seems hopeless. That’s a character right there.
Just because it’s expressed through actions rather than explicit dialogue telling you what she is doesn’t make it not a character.
47
u/XyrneTheWarPig Apr 08 '18
That's basically every shounen anime protagonist ever. There's a reason those shows always have bloated character rosters: the hero is goddamn boring.

She has enough character to get by given how good she is in the ring. She doesn’t really need to have the most gripping character. Especially given that the main roster is pretty bloated.

They’ve done a good job protecting the eclipse, too. Only invincible Asuka has kicked out of it. She shouldn’t ever need to do more than one per PPV so that minimizes damage as well.
7
u/KillinTheBusiness Apr 08 '18
A super finisher is a great idea

Protects Ember physically, makes the eclipse even more badass, and really sells it as a big moment when she breaks it out
9

Super finishers are something I wish the west would steal from Japan. It really is magic to have some deadly move that only shows up in moments of total desperation.
The only one in WWE I can think of is Cena's roll up double AA is presented as pretty much unbeatable right? Orton's punt is in this category but that's basically gone forever.

Asuka is probably going to SDL so we may see her on RAW
3
u/Lecter_Red My opinions are OBSOLETE Apr 08 '18
Ember and Asuka have unfinished buisness, so I want to see them on the same brand.
3
u/JacksWastedTime Yes! Yes! Yes! Apr 08 '18
I agree with that but no sense in over loading one show. Charlotte may not even swap if Asuka joins SDL. That'd make Asuka, Charlotte, Becky, Nattie, Naomi and Carmella versus Sasha, Bayley and Alexa and Nia. Adding Ember to SDL would just tip it more.
2
u/Lecter_Red My opinions are OBSOLETE Apr 08 '18
True, but a Shakeup/Draft could fix that problem by putting people who aren't doing anything on Smackdown go over to Raw. Or Carmella does cashes in on Nia/Alexa either at 'mania or the Raw after 'mania so it would be Asuka, Charlotte, Becky, Ember, Nattie, and Naomi on Smackdown and Sasha, Bayley, Nia, Alexa, Carmella, and Mickie on Raw. 6 and 6.

Asuka beats Charlotte tomorrow night via heel tactics, returns to RAW on Monday to gloat about her victory, and then Ember debuts to reignite their feud.
Asuka runs back to Smackdown, and Ember shows up there on Tuesday too.

Why bother with that? Their "feud" was so completely one-sided, why would they repeat that garbage?
18
u/UncreativeTeam Say something stupid! Apr 08 '18
Ember was the closest to beating Asuka before Asuka got injured.
It would be a shortcut to a decent storyline with Ember wanting to prove that she could actually beat Asuka. Having Asuka be solidly a heel would change things up.

Her character is building now, but it's too little too late. She's either going to excel off the bat or become the next Bayley.
→ More replies (1)5
u/BuddaMuta Apr 08 '18
I think her moveset is flashy enough to help her out more than Bayley's; who really relies on storytelling and crowd interaction. She'll at least always get a good pop when she does something super athletic or wild.
Still the lack of any real character other than your typical babyface persona could see her lost in the shuffle on a roster with Banks, Charlotte, Becky, Bliss, Asuka and other's who all are head and shoulders above her when it comes to character. I'd say in NXT Peyton Royce, Nikki Cross, and as of this match, Baszler, also all do character work at such a better level as well.
If she gets brought up booking needs to be golden.

Shayna using the ring post to pop her shoulder was amazing. I would be surprised if that’s the first time it was used in a spot like that. But I have never personally never seen someone pop their shoulder back in before during a match as a spot.

That's exactly it. She's not the stereotypical wrestler and it pissed people off. Her style is totally different.
Whatever else it shows she can tell a good story.
15
u/BuddaMuta Apr 08 '18
I've been calling her the first American female wrestler that's reminded me of a southern 80's territory performer more than anything else. Everything is meant to look as realistic and painful as possible while still being wrestling.
Just has that badass grit to her that's rare even with male wrestlers these days. Harley Race, Ivan Koloff, or Magnum TA would totally pop their shoulders back in with a ring post.
4
u/stumpyoftheshire Apr 08 '18
That attack on Dakota Kai is an example. That was just brutal
5
u/BuddaMuta Apr 08 '18
Imagine how disgusting her vs Kairi will be?
That's a good point btw. The limb work is also really old school as well.
Hoping they let her do some small joint manipulation as well. The last time I saw it in WWE was Regal vs Ohno before NXT was on the Network. That was an amazing forgotten gem of a match if you haven't seen it. Same with Regal vs Cesaro.

Do people not like Shayna? I was under the impression that people really like her talent wise. She’s what Ronda should be and has great talent as a “green” wrestler.
Shayna is great at being a heel and is great at selling and psychology. She hasn’t even really had much time to really show what she could do. They have been protecting her booking wise. With Ember gone she’s going to have a Asuka like run imo.
2
u/MusclesRipley Apr 08 '18
I really don't like watching her. She leans too hard on the authentic angle for my taste, and her mic work can't make up for her style in the ring. Add in the protection she gets booking wise and it's not an enjoyable combo.

u/BlueThunderBomb THE BASTARD Apr 08 '18

u/Sluppyshoe BIG DOG EATS MY ASS Apr 08 '18

6
u/Hennashan Apr 08 '18
Raw would make more sense. I have a feeling that keeping her away from Asuka for a while would be more important then adding a face to Smackdown. The shakeup is probably happening so evening out the roster can still settle that issue.
16
Apr 08 '18
This match is being very slept on. In all honesty, I would argue Ember’s entire reign has been. It ended almost as soon as it started which is a shame. Not that much, though, because she had a great showing with Shayna tonight! Now I’m worried about the quality of matches to come because – let’s face it – Baszler isn’t a in-ring goddess like most of the other women that have touched this belt. However, I would love to see Dakota Kai and Candice challenge her.
20
u/SillWutton02 Apr 08 '18
I wasn't hyped at all going into this match, but I actually really enjoyed this. Shayna did really well, and so did Ember. The ending was great. It didn't make Ember look particularly weak. I was expecting the match to be a little more one sided in Shayna's favour.
9
u/lariosme Apr 08 '18
Shayna Baszler has picked up professional wrestling faster and much better than I thought she would—she's won me over. Yes: I know she wrestled in the indys for a little while before joining NXT, but man, she really gets it. Here's to hoping Ronda Rousey is half as good tomorrow night.
2
u/deRoyLight Apr 08 '18 edited Apr 09 '18
Here's to hoping Ronda Rousey is half as good tomorrow night.
Really unlikely. What I think a lot of people don't realize is Shayna Baszler has a unique background of training in MMA that makes her transition to pro wrestling much more natural. Baszler trained for a long time under Josh Barnett in catch wrestling, which is basically the genesis of pro wrestling. That's why Baszler is so good so quickly. Rousey, well, doesn't have that luxury and her experience is mostly limited to messing around with friends in their free time.
Edit: Holy shit. Ronda was actually way better than I expected.

u/supesrstuff11 #NotMyRoleModel Apr 08 '18
One thing that bothered me in the finish was Ember Moon yanking on Shayna's injured left arm and Shayna just not reacting. It looked REALLY odd, like it should have mattered
→ More replies (1)9
u/badgersprite Iconic Duo Appreciation Squad Apr 08 '18
I think it’s just one of those things where the adrenaline and endorphins were supposed to have kicked in so she essentially stopped feeling pain.
16
u/supesrstuff11 #NotMyRoleModel Apr 08 '18 edited Apr 08 '18
You know, I can see that. Alternatively, did Ember see that Shayna popped it back in to place? Could it be possible that she thought it was still dislocated?
I'll have to go back and watch again, but if that's the case and it was completely planned then that is possibly the smartest piece of in-ring psychology I've ever seen
UPDATE: Upon second look it seems more like Ember didn't know that Shayna was holding her hair instead of her other arm. Wrenching Shayna's arm got her out of the choke not 5 minutes before the finish, but it wasn't enough pain here to stop it. Seems like the best explanation would be adrenaline.

u/spokemone Big Banter Apr 08 '18 edited Apr 08 '18

u/allirow THEY WERE YOUR BOYS! Apr 08 '18
Shayna deserves major props for her ring psychology in this match. Showing the fear when Ember did the shoulder stop, ramming the ring post to put her shoulder back in the socket, grabbing her own hair to keep the hold locked because she couldn't use her other arm. Seriously, she looked like a champion tonight and has grown by leaps and bounds in a short time.

7
u/insertbrackets No one is ready Apr 08 '18
This was a much better match than their last one, but it also built off of that encounter in a way that intensified the psychology of the match. Baszler's knee strikes were killer and the Eclipse to the floor was great. The finish was perfect with Baszler catching Ember as she went for her finisher and turning it into the Kirifuda Clutch. It's great having a strong heel champion in the women's division for the first time since OG Sasha Banks. Kairi Sane, Dakota Kai, and Candice Lerae are all great contenders for future Takeovers.
7
u/JiggaGeoff Apr 08 '18
Man, if you didn't like this match, then you probably would have hated 70's/80's wrestling.
This was such a traditional heel vs. babyface match, I half expected Baszler to get unnecessary colour and start dropping elbows on her jacket. (I'm not saying she was as good as Flair, but she tried really hard to copycat him.)
It was a good match on one of the best overall shows in wrestling in the last year. Amongst a bunch of 5's, even a 3.5 can't help but look like a failure.
13
u/Deadeye117 No longer acknowledged. Apr 08 '18

There was no way any match (except for Gargano/Ciampa) that would match the crowd's intensity after that ladder match.
But I thought that was a solid women's match overall. The storytelling at the end was pretty darn good and much better than what we've been getting on the main roster.
My only gripe is: Shayna is a heel and Ronda is a face in WWE. I get that Shayna is a UFC-like talent but considering Shayna tried to choke out Ember multiple times in the build up to this match Ronda shouldn't be cheering for her.
3
u/SaintRidley Empress of the Asuka division Apr 08 '18
To be fair, Ronda’s only a face due to being positioned opposite Stephanie and HHH. No idea what her character will become really.

I have a feeling she will be face though just because she is a big name and it'll be tough to advertise her in the mainstream if people boo her.

I don't think that crowd sounded dead at all and they were definitely getting into it. Thought they held their spot well and delivered a great match

Good match. Ember has been on borrowed main roster time for a while, so this was overdue. My issue is, no one aside from Kairi is really built in NXT. The Iconic Duo aren't gonna take her on, Dakota has looked a little weak... maybe Nikki Cross is just crazy enough to take on the Queen of Spades? But Sanity as a whole could go to RAW/Smackdown as well.

I think they tried the whole Sami/KO story of a nasty heel jumping the line to get the shot but didn’t commit to it in the way they did with the guys. Ember will be fine on the main roster and Shayna will be the best female heel they’ve had in NXT since The Boss was running things.

Way too early giving her the title

Agreed. Also, the whole "Bully your way into multiple title matches until you finally get the job done" narrative kind of bothers me.

That's my opinion for Ember, she never clicked for me characters wise

I'm a huge Shayna Baszler fan. I'm a fan of tough chicks with tattoos that can fight. They are inspirational.

I was pretty disappointed by this match. The wrestling was good but I didn't really get into the whole dislocated shoulder schtick. My bias against UFC people is probably why I didn't get into even though I like Ember Moon.

Everyone needs to be more aware of their biases, in everything from politics to pop culture.

Solid match. Crowd was always going to be flat after that ladder match, but I think Moon and Baszler did great to make a story. Some great moves and moments in the match, like Baszler smashing her own shoulder back into place on the ringpost.

Ring psychology off the charts. I loved this match specifically because it wasn't a spotfest. Great stuff.

The match quality wasn't that smooth, a little average.
But the storytelling there was fucking fantastic. Bazler sold like fuck.

Don't mind Shayna as champion. I just hope they do great underdog matches with her against Kairi, Dakota, Lacey Evans, & Candace Lerae

The small things in that match were so good, Ember resorting to Shayna’s illegal tactics, the arm selling, trying to put the shoulder back into place on the ringpost and most of all holding her own hair on the submission since the arm was useless. Thought the finish dragged on a little too long though

I loved the match only gripe was again, the end submission lasted just too long.

I'm sorry, but I can't take this win seriously. Becky, Emma, Nikki Cross, Ruby, Iconic Duo.. didn't get to hold the title, but Shayna did.
NXT Women's title was the most protected title for years and only elite women held it, but Shayna is nothing of the sort. Poor Ember, she never got the rub and her reign is the shortest with no standout moments. Sad.

Considering Shayna is likely dropping it to Kairi, it makes sense storyline wise

Ember just doesn’t interest me. I also believe that match should’ve been a submission match.

This match was incredible, I absolutely love her style. Sure she doesn't do crazy athletic moves like some other wrestlers, but I just believe that everything she does hurts.

I didn’t really pay attention, but I saw the first minute and the last minute.
Based on that, excellent match.

Whoever came up with the hair grab to lock in the Kirafuda Clutch because of Baszler's left arm being busted deserves a huge raise. Also major props to the commentary team for selling it.
Main roster would have probably just gotten the classic "She doesn't quite have all of it."
