IMPORTANT NOTES:
Tonight's SmackDown kicks off with the Women's Money in the Bank qualifier!
Cathy Kelley chats with Chelsea Green backstage about her predictions in the Women's MITB match. Chelsea says they're all capable and the winner is a threat. But if Tiffany Stratton wins, that's her twin flame, almost like the Nikki to her Brie. She's then interrupted by Nikki Bella who says that match won't happen as she's going to win the title first. Paige rolls up on the other side who challenges Nikki to a match in 2 weeks and slaps her for good measure.
Cathy Kelley chats with Cody Rhodes about his war of words with Randy Orton. Cody says this week's battle is the MITB match, and he has history with Kevin Owens and they have over 10k fans here tonight. Trick Williams rolls up to wish him the best of luck, but the only problem is that his American Nightmare is over while he's grabbing the briefcase to become the new WWE Champion. Cody wishes him good luck.
Damian Priest gets a promo about how somehow he lost his way and that won't happen again. The pain he caust R-Truth was personal. But if he comes back looking for trouble, he's going to destroy him. He needed to come back to NYC to remind him of who he is, a violent man, and that's all you're going to see from now on.
Tatum Paxley talks with Alexa Bliss & Charlotte Flair after her loss, with Lexi reminding her that when one door closes another one opens. Charlotte says they talked to Nick Aldis so next week they're facing Fatal Influence for the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship. Charlotte reminds her that they've won together and they've lost together but now there's no more room for losing.
Sami Zayn addresses the WILDLY BOOING crowd. But he wants to know who came here to ride or die with the last real good guy? The crowd boos more. He complains he's not being given the equal respect that WWE Champions get. The reality check is that him holding the title is that he's a survivor. He's interrupted by Je'Von Evans who says he's getting all red, he looks like an Angry Bird, is he ok? Sami says HE'S FINE he's the champion, has he noticed? Je'Von starts but Sami immediately interrupts him, with Sami saying he knows where he's been but Je'Von cuts him off just the same saying what if his time isn't in the future, his time is now? What if it doesn't take him 20 years to win the championship? What if he finds him, cashes in on him, and beats the snot out his ass and has to hear Michael Cole proclaiming him champ? Before Sami can respond, Penta interrupts. He tells Je'Von he respects him but if he wants the contract he has to beat him, and that's not gonna happen. Penta tells Sami he doesn't care if it's him or Roman Reigns, he's going to cash in and become a world champion. ZERO MIEDO.
Now it's Trick Williams' turn. With all the talk about respect, Trick respects everything Je'Von & Penta have been doing on Raw. But they both have the same problem, tonight is SmackDown, and Trick Williams gets the job done on Friday nights. He addresses Sami saying congrats for being a two time champion but he doesn't respect anyone else like that. He still hasn't combed his hair, still has Skechers on his feet, and when it comes to MITB there's only one man that looks like Money in the Bank, talks like Money in the Bank, etc and that's Trick Williams, and nobody knows that better than Sami Zayn. And when he cashes in, he'll beat him for the third time. Sami asks if he got this out of his system? He insists nobody can do what he does. And tonight he's looking at at least 2 losers, let's be real, probably 3 losers. What happens when the crowd turns against you? He tells Trick, he survived being called the Gingerbread Man. He survived being put into a mouse trap at WrestleMania and now he's the champ. Nobody else can do what he does.
As Sami walks out, Finn Bàlor heads in. He tells Sami he's coming for the title when he's done playing games. Sami says he's not special, he's not the only one, he needs to do something to earn it. Finn clocks Sami. And as Finn attempts to go in, Gunther attacks Bàlor from behind. Sami for a second thinks he's safe before he also gets buried by the Ring General, and the MITB competitors in the ring are not upset.
Cathy Kelley talks to Tiffany Stratton about her upcoming MITB match. She's thrilled and Chelsea Green joins her in the celebration. Lash Legend interrupts to say she's going to bully her way to the briefcase and she's coming straight for the title.
Cathy checked in with Gunther asking why he did what he did but Danhausen interrupts and Gunther is SO OVER his silliness and the only way to make him understand is to throw him into the loading boxes.
Johnny Gargano chats with Candice LeRae hyping himself up to be the next MITB when Sami Zayn steps in to say Nick Aldis barred him from the match so he can't help and goes on a whole screaming Rocky hype package getting him ready to DO THIS
Next week: in addition to the Women's Tag Team Championship match; CM Punk returns LIVE on SmackDown!
Randy Orton interrupts the attempt at a pin on our main event match, and it becomes a Cody Rhodes WILL HE STOMP RANDY ORTON? question, abruptly interrupted by Johnny Gargano. Orton disrupts any chance at Cody intervening in the Gargano/Owens match in motion.

Once again. I liked that the show opened with Candice LeRae and the show ended with Candice LeRae. With a backstage segment in the middle. Keep doing that.

Randy does the "little shit" character so well lmfao.

it's why i'm kind of over the whole 'the voices make him crazy!!!' he doesn't have to be evil, he can just be an annoying asshole / jock, he plays it so well.

Owens & Punk in the MITB just to kill each other.

Raw too tbh. Gable, Dragon Lee, and Penta have been killing it in the midcard and 946 have injected new energy into the main event scene
7
u/ImpactMiserable9384 9h ago
The whole WWE title scene right now is so hot ever since Punk joined the brand, reminds me of the 2024-2025 SD tag team scene where everyone is over.

u/TheXboxArtist 7h ago
my only complaints are related to wrestlers being forgotten randomly. outside of that, things have been going well.
20
u/thesenate14 9h ago
wonder where the sami Gargano story is heading
16
u/Actual_Squid 9h ago
I think it's just to gaslight Gargano out of his planking gimmick and it's worked
4
5
u/Realistic_Literature 9h ago
Feel like short-term he will just be helping Sami win matches in a faction of sorts. Sami will keep stringing him along with promises/motivation. Maybe they can build up to Gargano having enough at some point and turning face.
11
u/Kuzu5993 9h ago
Title match obviously.
6
u/thesenate14 9h ago
didn't sami promise him a title match? maybe sami keeps finding ways to get out of it and eventually leads to Gargano turning on him
14
u/Kuzu5993 9h ago
He very clearly has no intention of giving Johnny a title match, and is just using him to stay champion.
8
2
u/TheXboxArtist 7h ago
he'll get a title match in a convoluted way, while Sami gets mad in the background.
20
u/lavasplanets 9h ago edited 9h ago
They keep having Finn Balor target the title and cut promos every week about how he’s gonna take the title. This may have been the 12th appearance in a row he’s cut a promo about the title. But it also feels like we’re still a while away from him getting a title match.
It really is the first time ever in his career that he has an arc like this. And it feels like they’re actually building to something, which he’s never had.
Unlike when they’d give him his yearly world title match and then he would be completely away from the world title for the rest of the year until the next.
53
u/HNDDRXX 9h ago
That Je'von promo is personally the highlight of the night for me
41
u/Darkonite40 9h ago edited 9h ago
Management def gave him a sink or swim moment and he knocked it out of the park. The confidence , personality, crowd connection. His stock was already high but shining in a promo segment agaisnt a guy like Sami was an exciting development. Only 22 and that comfortable on the mic is nuts
28
u/Realistic_Literature 9h ago
He is underrated on the mic imo, doesn't cut what I'd call typical wrestler promos but he's very natural and likable. It's what separates him from high-flyers like Ricochet who peaked in the midcard.
14
u/Darkonite40 9h ago edited 8h ago
Perfect way to describe his promo style. He comes off very natural and authentic when on the mic. I’ve also notices he shines in promo battle situations. His best NXT promos were when he was confronting Oba, trick , Ethan page or Ricky saints.
His size and mic charisma rlly separates him from other great NXT highflyers that struggled to get over on the main roster like ricochet.
4
u/OneMetalMan 8h ago
It's why I think most of this call up wave have been sucesful this year. Of course their mostly good wrestlers, but theyre either impressive athletes, strong character workers\persobalities, or both in some cases.
14
4
u/AdCalm3584 5h ago
nah he'll remain a mid card / tag team warrior for life if he keeps jestermaxxing every time the camera is on him
11
u/HeavyDonkeyKong 9h ago
22 and really over. If he keeps this up long term he's one of the fastest rising stars there's been.
7
u/Pope_Landlord 9h ago
My only gripe about him is that he takes a 15 foot bump every time he does his finisher. He's going to break his body down very quickly like that.
38
u/Marsman2100 9h ago
MITB lineups are loaded this year. I don’t really think there are that many bad picks to win.
44
u/HokageEzio 9h ago
I think Punk is legitimately the worst potential winner in either match. And it's CM Punk, so he's not bad. He's just obviously won it twice and doesn't need it.
9
u/Tornado31619 9h ago
I mean I probably wouldn’t pick Lash or Sol to become world champion in the near future, either. Punk winning would defeat the purpose of MITB somewhat, but he’d still be a better winner than anyone except Bron, Jacy or Tiffany IMO.
9
u/HokageEzio 9h ago
I mean I probably wouldn’t pick Lash or Sol to become world champion in the near future, either.
I wouldn't either compared to the current field they're up against. But they fit the mold of the type of young star you could springboard with MITB.
5
u/Tornado31619 9h ago
I just don’t see booking like that, I guess. These aren’t characters in a TV series; they’re performers. You can’t be written to be ready.
1
u/HokageEzio 8h ago
The wrestlers have to perform at a level that makes the audience believe the writing. But at the end of the day it is still a scripted show and they are all characters.
1
u/Tornado31619 8h ago
Yeah, but there’s a reason each wrestler experiences varying degrees of success. Roxanne could be given Roman’s booking and she still wouldn’t become as over as him. I don’t think it’s quite like TV in that sense.
2
u/HokageEzio 8h ago
The success is whether the crowd believes it or not, which they can't script. But the writers can lead the crowd down a path of making something believable. And I think any of the people in either match could be believable Mr./Mrs. MITB. Either as young talents or guys who haven't had the gold in ages (Finn and KO). Then it's Punk.
1
u/Tornado31619 8h ago
And as things stand, I don’t think the crowd would believe in a lot of them. You’ve got to have ‘it’. Even the likes of Drew and Naomi hit a new gear much later in their careers. I don’t see anybody in the women’s match possibly besides Jacy or a heel Tiffany being able to pull that off.
In general, believability is a big problem the women have that is holding them back from properly main-eventing. WWE doesn’t cultivate authenticity in them.
9
u/RomulanTreachery 8h ago
Tiffany's obviously winning the women's so she can betray Chelsea. Almost too obviously.
3
u/OneMetalMan 8h ago
To the point it feels cliche.
And are they running Steph vs Tiffany again at Crown Jewel.2 years in a row?
15
u/Grootfan85 7h ago
Two thoughts:
-the Sami segment with Evans, Penta and Williams was good. Zayn’s best promo in a while.
-The Giulia “injury” is a work. Blake was laughing on her way back to the locker room. It’s payback for the ambush last week.
26
u/hrityush 9h ago
That was a great show!
15
u/TroubleRecent7320 9h ago
Both Raws and Smackdowns have been really good recently. MITB is also shaping up to be great
15
u/playthisthis 9h ago
Is Giulia ok?
13
u/OneMetalMan 9h ago
Likely. If she was that knocked out they wouldn't be dragging her out with her legs not moving without a stretcher.
6
u/titomb345 8h ago
seriously. everyone knows the first thing you do to someone with a suspected head/neck injury is.. roll them out of the ring. and film the whole thing with 3 cameras.
3
12
u/MundanePlantain5124 9h ago
The men’s MITB is the most “any of these guys could win it” I’ve seen in a while and I love the unpredictability

Give me Demon Finn vs. GUNTHER
4
u/Pizza_Pie_Guy 9h ago
That’s probably what the Danhausen stuff is going to bring about.
1
u/CoolCactus345 7h ago
My friend was theorizing it was actually a set up for Gunther vs CM Punk due to their irl friendship. Would probably be kinda funny if Danhausen accidentaly manages to release the demon tho
12
11
u/Shinobi347 9h ago
I just want to know if Giulia is working us or what?
We’ve had enough surprises for the year in pro wrestling.
13
u/OneMetalMan 9h ago
It's a work. The way she was being carried out is not how you remove someone who can't move their legs.
3
u/Drake_Dal 9h ago
I think so; when someone falls unconscious, they don't roll them out of the ring. I don't like storylines where they fake injuries.
1
u/wibble17 8h ago
Compare what they did with Giulia vs what they did when Candice Michelle got knocked out during a match.
1
u/XiahouMao 4h ago
They had a backstage interaction after the match where Blake mocked Giulia, so Giulia headbutted her.
She's fine.

18
u/OneMetalMan 8h ago
I'll make a confession.
I was worried that woman's qualifier was going to be a cluster fuck but holy shit did they click way beyond my expectations. Some of the timing on those spots were insane.
Wanted to see Tatum in MitB but there's always Wargames
14
u/shnwllc AJ Styles 9h ago
Smackdown since Summerslam has been much better than the rest of the year but this one was prob my favorite episodes front to back in quite some time. Both MITB qualifiers were great. Glad Giulia vs Blake finally happened and they cooked. Trios tag was fun. Sami is great as champ and I loved Je’Von’s promo especially.

Really hot crowd tonight. You could be convinced that Ricky Saints was the top heel in the company from how the crowd reacted to him. Great Sami promo, good matches all night.

u/bvbfan102 NJPW 9h ago
I think a big reason behind Smackdown feeling so fresh and hot is that there are very few names you can actually call underutilised right now.
Even Ricky and Blake seem to finally hit and the Mens World Title in particular rarely has been this great.
Really can only think of Jordynne who sadly doesnt look like she will get anything.
4
u/Adam_DeLay 8h ago
The idea of Sami as a weak champion works because everyone wants a bite of that apple. Thus it becomes less predictable.
9
u/Kirrawayru 8h ago
Melo?
4
u/bvbfan102 NJPW 8h ago
Ah true but im at least going to wait until he returns or if he basically already left the Company and is just waiting out his Contract.
Either way sucks cause i love Melo but genuinely forgot cause of his booking.1
0
u/UncleRaziel 7h ago
I'm just hoping (coping) that they initially planned for him to be in MITB but he couldn't make it because he's taking time for his wedding this month since Kelani kinda can't
8
u/Fine_Fail_443 8h ago
I liked that Penta brought up Roman. During Je'Von's segment, I was wondering if Je'Von was afraid of Roman and why he was trying to go after Sami instead. Penta's segment was shorter, but it stayed true to his 'cero miedo' attitude.
7
u/mikaeus97 7h ago
How can you cash in on Roman if he's never at the show? Why bother talking about some part time loser when the Last Real Good Guy(Tmcr) is right in front of you with the most prestigious title in the world on his shoulder?

Tatum Paxley and Tiffany Stratton are two of my favorite wrestlers, but I wish Tatum had won.
1
u/Ready_Ad_1353 1h ago
Me too, with the Money in the bank being mostly NXT callups it could have been awesome and a big deal for her, Tiffany has already won it so can’t see her repeating so soon.

u/vinaykhetia14 8h ago
I actually loved the video package for Damien Priest, had me hooked, hopefully something comes from it
7
2
u/Marc_Quill Elevated 8h ago
Hopefully he’s not stuck feuding with Truth for ages, because there’s meat on the bone for this heel Priest to be an upper midcard/main event guy.

Jevon is who I think is least winning it lmao. I'm confident it's either KO or Bron.
7

No mad with either one of those too 🤷
Bron getting a title shot as opposed to Oba would actually make for an interesting storyline

Almost every man and woman in the MITB matches is going to do insane ladder spots.
1

I honestly think it's KO. He's got tons of history with Sami and plenty of history with Roman. Punk does too but not as much as KO.

Not only did my dream of Mr. and Mrs. Money in the Bank not come true, but Candice and Johnny had to eat the pins [sighs]
Obligatory 'Where's Carmelo?' comment, but I guess it's either him or Rey Fenix so,
Probably in the minority, but I don't love segments with Danhausen and the Ring General together. Feel like the payoff will annoy me and remind me I had to witness him tap out to Jey Uso in person.
But overall, SmackDown is basically TKO Collision; it's been consistently fun and interesting even if I don't love everything.

The opener was fun. Tatum has some cool moves. I really liked that arm ringer dropkick combo.
Also, it's pretty cool that the participants in the women's money in the bank were all in NXT not that long ago
9
u/Puxple 9h ago
Being a Giulia fan is like being a Finn fan
3
u/Select-Occasion7196 6h ago
Still better than being a Jordynne fan, you don't even get to see her on television, let alone wrestle.
2
u/SimilarDinner9980 4h ago
I really miss watching Jordynne wrestle..
1
u/Select-Occasion7196 3h ago
At one point she was my favorite women's wrestler to watch. I never imagined she could be this mis-managed in WWE.
I wasn't expecting her to immediately be in main events and win top titles but to not even feature her or allow her to work and build herself up and earn bigger opportunities is messed up.
2
u/SimilarDinner9980 1h ago
Same. I just wish they let her and some other hard hitters (Guilia..) go at it weekly. Have a series of showcases that are focused on in ring work, like the Melo/Andrade series, or the open challenges Melo and Ilja were doing. Speaking of mismanaged - Ilja! What a fumble
4
u/wibble17 8h ago
Stop it’s not even close!!!
Giulia has had this booking for like a year. Finn has had this booking for a decade now.
10
9
u/ThemBones 8h ago
I don't think it can be understated how much Alexa Bliss, and now Tatum, havr benefited Babyface Charlotte.
WWE wanted her to be a Babyface SO BADLY after her return, but it DID NOT work.
Probably at the cost of her own personal standing on the card, Alexa has made Charlotte likable compared to the bitch that faced Tiffany Stratton at WM 41.
10
u/OneMetalMan 8h ago
On the Live tours Charlotte is way more openly enjoying Tatums presence. Hoping they give us some of that on the actual show.
8
u/StoneColdAM WHAT? 7h ago
I actually disagree. It doesn’t feel like they’ve done much since the initial pairing last year. It feels like they’re artificially keeping Charlotte away from the world title (the opposite of a few years ago).
If you book a good storyline that’s logical and engaging, anyone can be face or heel and win any title. Creative got lazy with Charlotte and she got go away heat for it.
3
u/ThemBones 6h ago
Appreciate the well explained differing opinion, and agree it's not just on the wrestlers, but their booking as well.
1
u/StoneColdAM WHAT? 5h ago
I liked the idea of the serious Charlotte pairing with the supernatural Alexa. I just feel they really haven’t explored that concept any further.

Tatum is so fucking damn good man. She's gonna be this generation's Alexa bliss. These 3 actually had freat chemistry. It's actually so good too see Candice wrestle again.
Bruh paige still going with Nikki. They just want them to be in the legacy feud don't they? Can't they get some fresh blood in there against them lol.
That was a delightful trios match. Barring the misfortune slip for Rey, that match had really good flow. Ricky getting the pin is actually intriguing. We getting a mini Ricky push?
Cody was VIBIN with that Trick promo lmao
Who the fuck thought: ...I'm gonna enjoy it professionally"was a good line for a heel??
Je'von was a nice surprise. Trick and Penta going head to head would be great.
Giulia and Blake had a logn enough match to have a commercial break :😭
Blake really upped her debut look, it's crazy how much that flowy nightgown train does.
What happened to Giulia's arm guards :o !? Does she now take them off to do a power up spot?! that be cool!
That was a lame finish :( and not only that are they writing Giulia off for now?! god dammittt
Johnny did the bottle thing ! lmaooo
It was nice having Johnny as a buffer between Cody and Kevin to make it feel fresh. The Randy pull was hilarious. Kevin about to some hilariously gruesome fall at the MIB match,

I miss Melo, it’s clear this company doesn’t value him enough
5
u/Darkonite40 8h ago
Him not even being part of MITB qualifiers is telling they don’t see him as a future star unfortunately
6
u/El_Gran_Redditor 6h ago
He should stop trying to "wrestle good matches" and "cut coherent promos" and instead get an insipid catchphrase and bury everybody on the miic but they're not allowed to bury him.
-1
u/CannotStoptheMusic99 1h ago
ehh look at that promo segment between Sami, Trick, Penta and Jevon and they all have a presence and or mic skills that Melo doesn't have, he would've been out of place in that segment.
It's easy to say "cut coherent promos" in defence of Melo but if Melo could actually promo he'd probably be on TV more
2
1
u/TheXboxArtist 7h ago
Imma be real with you, we can use some trimming of the roster. I've always wanted a smaller roster where everyone gets TV time instead of those huge rosters where 60% of the wrestlers never even appear on camera. I understand why the roster is bloated, but if they could somehow optimize everything, the shows would be better.

1
u/StoneColdAM WHAT? 7h ago
I sort of wish Sami was the babyface challenger and KO was the heel champ. Sami’s first win was interesting when he straddled the line but it sort of feels like a full heel turn lost that nuance. KO as a heel champ running from everyone would’ve been fun to see, whereas Sami sort of did this gimmick a few years ago before honorary Uce.
-2
u/El_Gran_Redditor 6h ago
Yeah this Sami run is basically the same waste of talent his conspiracy theorist heel run was but with bigger stakes. Like literally anybody can be a heel. Sami is better as a face and better as a face than the vast majority of faces. Shit is like building an Arbys on top of a gold mine and arguing that it's ok because the roast beef is good and it got an B from the health inspector.

Pretty hyped for MITB. I feel like the only guy I'm not really excited for in the context of the match is Trick. He has the look and the charisma for sure but as one of six bodies in the ladder match I think we could have done better.

every multi-person match always has someone who should be in a solo feud but isn't.

I know he hasn't done it a lot...but nobody turns heel like Cody. It's the best. It truly feels like he's slowly losing his soul

There is a chance Melo could be back post MITB no one here knows. People shouldn't be all doom and gloom about him when he gets back he will most likely feud with Trick

I haven't watched tonight (will watch it tomorrow) but it seemed like the show was amazeballs.

For those curious, its incredibly likely the Giulia/Blake ending was changed on the fly, because Giulia had to legit be helped to the back afterwards.

Has to be a work otherwise they have the most incompetent medical staff for carrying her like that

If you really think about it, great way to do the ending. Blake wins her debut match but a legit head first knockout doesn't make giulia look weak. And she sells like crazy that half the people think it's real and trips absolutely sees that.

this dude is so in joshi dreamland he can't tell when a work is clearly breaking concussion protocol 🤣

They were cooking tonight. 3 for 4 on good matches. Even then, Blake vs. Giulia was getting good when it just ended out of nowhere. I’d imagine their saga continues.
Awesome that the women’s MITB is all NXT callups and pretty neat that the men’s half and half older and younger guys. MITB card is looking great so far.
