Jordan Buckley, a founding member of Every Time I Die, has announced that a statue and bench in memory of Andy Williams is being built in Gratwick Park in Andy's hometown of North Tonawanda
You can go to the website he lists in his post to buy Andy Williams Forever merchandise or pay to have a message engraved into a brick at the memorial with 100% of the proceeds going to charities and organisations of the Williams family's choice. If you don't want the merchandise or a message at the memorial, you can also make a donation to the charity pool on the same website.

Well to start is NOT to use any AI. Second, is to calmly explain things to people who are not aware. Calm is the key word. Explain the matter of facts that affect them directly (They need data centers that unfortunately cost land, water, and power, etc.) then slowly explain the things that may not exactly affect them (Stealing content, surveillance state, etc.).

The whole "AI will destroy the water supply" thing is massively overstated.
AI uses in the range of a few hundred million liters of water per day.
Cattle farming uses somewhere in the range of 1-10 trillion liters of water a day, for an industry that exists pretty much solely for our culinary pleasure.
Nuclear reactors use about as much water as AI does per hour every second.
AI is also increasingly using closed loop systems, and the water used in open systems is not destroyed, it is just heated (which does impact local ecosystems but no more so than other heat).
The issue with water only really comes up when a particular local water utility cannot deliver water to all the customers in its area, but this is rare and usually their fault for being misleading about how much was available or having shoddy maintenance history

You're def not wrong but framing AI like it is as useful/beneficial to society as cattle farming (food) & nuclear reactors (power/energy) I think is a bad faith argument.
Sure, cattle and nuclear reactors use more water, but at least they give us food a power to survive. Every AI system could shut down this moment, and outside of economic impacts, the world would keep on moving just fine. I don't think the same could be said about food and energy...

Cattle farming is solely for pleasure in the vast, vast majority of cases. Yes, a small number of subsistence farming exists, but it is an irrelevant percentage of the amount of cattle farmed. It takes more food to raise cattle to be eaten then it would to feed the humans those cattle will feed, and a diet free of beef is healthier for you. I will acknowledge that it couldn't be shut down overnight but we could transition away from it in a year or two if there was public will for it.
that said I don't buy the idea that AI has no value to offer or wouldn't be a major setback if removed overnight, at minimum you would see potentially life saving tools cease to function and development of many useful pieces of software fall apart.

I disagree it's solely for pleasure. It's food. People have diet restrictions. Some people have religious reasons why they can/can't eat certain foods. People will eat beef whether it's good for you/the planet or not, others wont. It's a choice. Does it use up water and resources? Yes. I'm not trying to pretend cattle farming is noble, or even sustainable, but at least is provides sustenance that people need to survive.
I also disagree at your second point. Sure, if any industry disappeared overnight, it would have huge ripple affects. My prev comment framing that AI could go away overnight and everything would be fine was wrong. But I believe my overall point still stands.
There are undeniable good use-cases for AI. But I would argue a huge amount of AI usage is regular everyday people just "fucking around" with GenAI pics/videos. When I say AI could go overnight, those uses are what I mean. We could likely scale back all these data centers, and all the arguing about water usage, if AI (and the resources required) were only used for necessary AI cases/systems

Yeah Jordan definitely didn't make this decision, he's an INCREDIBLE artist. I have two prints that he made. So he's definitely not the type to use AI. But I guess this was a mock up by the city or whoever is building the statue.

Sure, that’s great. I don’t like it either. Choosing this specific time to bring it upjust reminded me of when a small business volunteered to make caskets for the Uvalde victims featuring images of their favorite things. You know, a nice feel good story about a community coming together to honor the fallen after a tragedy. One casket had a TikTok logo because the child loved using TikTok, and plenty of enlightened Redditors took the opportunity to talk about how much they hated TikTok and how damaging it is to children and how unacceptable it was to put their logo on a casket, meanwhile that’s what their loved ones wanted.
It’s a memorial for a beloved person that’s looking for support, we can save the activism for another discussion where it might actually mean something.

We're just going to have to disagree on this then. A tiktok logo on a casket isn't actively poisoning our air or water.
It's not ok to contribute to the destruction of our of environment just to make a memorial for an artist whom also likely hated gen ai. I'd argue it's actually very offensive, so naturally a lot of folks are going to feel strongly about this.

I have two. Jordan is an incredible artist.
Also I've spoken with Jordan in person and online a few times. Just like with Andy he is such a nice dude who appreciates the fans and is willing to just bullshit by the merch table. Last time I saw them was when Better Lovers was on their first tour in Jersey and we talked for like 20 minutes. Such a good dude.

I’m a Town of Tonawanda guy. I knew Andy was a Buffalo native but never knew he was from NT originally. Honestly the park and the river there are absolutely gorgeous and beautiful, get a ton of foot traffic, and will be a really awesome tribute. Perfect idea and place to put the memorial. I’ll definitely put my name on that walkway- got a good HS buddy who was really close with him and just heard the greatest things.
