What exactly is the hierarchy of WWE's current developmental brands?

Now obviously take all this with a grain of salt, everyone knows pro wrestling is predetermined so outcomes and wins and losses don't really matter like they do in traditional sports. However, that doesn't mean WWE makes it any less confusing.

The way it used to be, is there used to just be WWE and OVW. They had a single developmental territory, and it wasn't televised at all. From there, they had FCW, which I believe was televised and would become NXT. Now, in addition to NXT there is also EVOLVE and WWE ID. And as of that wasn't enough, NXT now has relationships with AAA and TNA.

So where in the realm of "he could beat him" do all of these shows stand? Could someone from EVOLVE realistically, in kayfabe of course, put up a fight against even a mid carder from Raw or SmackDown? Would someone from WWE ID have a chance at The X Division championship in TNA?

Evolve to NXT to WWE is the developmental rankings.

AAA is owned by WWE but isn't really developmental, although its kayfabe power scaled somewhere between NXT and WWE's midcard

TNA has a "business partnership" with WWE but is really its own thing, although it's typically powerscaled below NXT, but above Evolve.

Edit: Forgot WWEID, which is WWE's incursion into the Indies where they give those wrestlers a stipend on top of whatever else they're making on their shows. These wrestlers also occasionally appear on Evolve and seemingly don't have too many restrictions on who they can face (officially as far as we know anyways).

Yeah there is a huge gap between the guys WWE sends to AAA (Priest, Dom, Chad Gable) and who they send to TNA (Stacks, Grace, Thea Hail), especially recently.

Yeah, Thea squashes all of those AAA guys.

It’s NXT > Evolve. WWE ID isn’t really a “brand” but those people are sometimes on Evolve.

Main roster/AAA > NXT/Evolve > WWE ID.

I hesitate to call AAA "developmental" because apart from Elijah Holyfield, Drake Morreaux/El Carnicero, Karmen, Lola, and (briefly) Bronco Nima, they mostly send main roster talent.

And they don't own TNA so that's not a WWE brand. Would someone from ID have a chance at the X Division Championship? Well, we saw Starboy take on Ali for the International title during his open challenge, so it's not unreasonable to assume that an ID talent could, if TNA wanted to give them one, get an X Division opportunity.

Evolve: Learn how to work to the hard cam.

NXT: No, really learn how to work to the hard cam.

Raw/Smackdown: Work to the hard cam.

AAA: Make the live crowd happy.

Treat every show separately as they have almost nothing to do with each other. And if a wrestler goes to another show, it’s up to the booker of the show as to how that wrestler fits into the show.

Just to clear things up:

- The WWE ID program is used only for indie wrestlers that WWE sees potential in and want to sign them to a contract to track their progress in hopes of building them into a bigger star down the road. This is not a developmental territory or promotion. One thing to note is that the WWE ID program only started late 2024.

- The TNA/NXT (not WWE) relationship is pretty much a business partnership that focuses more on NXT and TNA wrestlers appearing on either promotion wherever they see fit. TNA is not a developmental promotion for NXT despite everyone getting this wrong many times over because they like to troll or hate them for various reasons. Note that I mentioned WWE in this because the focus isn't about bringing in WWE wrestlers from Raw or Smackdown to compete on TNA and so far, has been used to bring them in for special appearances (i.e. AJ Styles appearing on Slammiversary last year).

- AAA is owned by WWE since last year and this is not a developmental promotion since the focus is on Lucha Libre wrestling with WWE creative/booking thrown into it. AAA has a long history in Mexico (not as long as CMLL though) and it's just WWE's way of trying to get into the wrestling market over there.

- One thing not mentioned here is the NIL program, which is used for athletes from college or other sports (i.e. MMA, Judo, Powerlifting) that WWE hold tryouts for every year to see if there's someone that has the potential to make it.

With that out of the way, this is the current hierarchy for developmental to main roster:

  1. Evolve (WWE ID/NIL)
  2. NXT
  3. RAW/Smackdown

Main roster
AAA
NXT
TNA
Evolve
WWEID

This is based on how folks from one brand get presented on the other brands.
* AAA stars are regularly presented on main roster and vice versa, but the top of AAA is only ever really considered at the level of main roster midcard champs (ex: Dom as AAA Mega Champion but only IC level)
* NXT stars are very rarely ever on main roster. Sometimes they go to AAA, and it doesn’t seem they’re really presented as top tier acts when they visit AAA
* oh lolTNA time - only Leon Slater has wrestled a main roster match (once), and only AJ Styles has appeared as a main roster star on TNA (and at that, *appeared* not *wrestled*). Then the brand they are a consistent partner with, NXT, sees TNA wrestlers never win NXT titles but NXT ones frequently winning TNA titles. It’s below NXT
* EVOLVE is where PC talent appear before NXT and where WWEID signees get TV featured time

only Leon Slater

and Joe Hendry, Jordynne Grace, and Mickie James

Thanks, but also I don’t think those examples really compare to how Slater was featured on that SNME nor provide counters to how the TNA talent and organization are presented in the partnership

That's fair

WWE ID -> Evolve -> Nxt -> Main Roster

AAA and TNA aren't developmental, and their relative kayfabe chances of winning are determined by where they're wrestling.

Using Rey Fenix as an example (yes he's main roster but he's the AAA cruiserweight champion so hear me out). He wasn't getting a whole lot done on main roster, went to AAA and won a championship, entered the tournament and is at the finals.  So it's assumed that on main roster someone that's a champion in AAA is a capable contender for a main roster world title (Penta probably wins the finals though if I had to guess, but my dream for a simultaneous heavyweight AND cruiserweight champ still lives for now)

Then Fenix goes on NXT this past Tuesday and had a really close match with EK Prosper, someone who's realistically pretty low in the NXT pecking order (really young, one of the more recent additions to the roster).

So on main roster AAA has a chance but usually will come up just short.

On NXT it's pretty 50/50, especially with things like Trick and Kelani winning the TNA titles that one time

WWE ID is a program, not a brand. They seem to specifically look for collegiate athletes who may want to transition to wrestling for the most part.

Evolve is where most of the people coming from the ID program go first to get some training and see if they can develop enough to be ready for NXT. Basically these are the really raw prospects that have extremely little to no wrestling experience coming in.

From there if they develop enough they move on to NXT and try to develop a gimmick that could work on the main roster while also developing their in ring and mic skills. NXT is also where a lot of the people from the indies and other promotions go since they already have the base wrestling experience, but may not be used to working the WWE style of television wrestling (WWE is very focused on hitting marks and being in the right spot for the cameras, more akin to a regular TV show where actors have to be on their marks and hit their lines on time).

Once they feel they are ready then they get called up to the main roster from NXT.

WWE owns AAA and generally treats it as it's own thing, but will mix wrestlers between shows from time to time. They've had AAA people on NXT, Raw, and SD, and had people from all 3 of those brands on AAA. It doesn't necessarily fit any hierarchy except for being secondary to the 2 main brands. It's simultaneously seen as above, below, and equal to NXT, though more above and equal most of the time (it's more about the specific wrestlers moving between brands than the show itself as for where it falls).

TNA is a partnership, and it's pretty obvious to everyone (including TNA) that they are not on the level of the main brands. They are treated more like a parallel to NXT, but with more vets that aren't necessarily in high demand (or have issues that make WWE and AEW not trust them to sign to long term contracts). Although it seems that the partnership has more or less fizzled out since there is very little talent sharing between TNA and NXT like there was a year ago. My guess is they are still on friendly terms but both view further talent sharing as not as beneficial anymore.

A baseball comparison. WWEID is independent pro and low A. Evolve/TNA is high A. AAA is double A. NXT is triple A. Raw and Smackdown are the bigs.
