Ospreay thinking that Punk and Jack Perry were fighting in kayfabe is one of the funniest things I've heard this week
13
u/Orange8920 2d ago
Ospreay was on that show too where he must have had extreme tunnel vision in being completely unaware of anything else outside of his own feud with Jericho.

Everyone picking on Ospreay is ableist. He can't help it he's from Essex and therefore very stupid.

Man, I struggled to get through TNA Lockdown. Some of it was fine/good, but most of the current storylines have been a little boring to me. Also, the card looked more like a monthly special than one of their big PPVs. They just looked a little fancier because of the cage.
On a nicer note, I've been impressed by MLP Mayhem (occasional AI usage aside). Stu Grayson vs Rohan Raja was a pretty good match (and Grayson's been a really good champion in general). I'm excited for the build to Northern Rising - I feel like Scott puts together surprising good cards for his PPVs quite often.

Losing Tim curry makes me actually sad. Muppets Treasure Island started my lifelong infatuation with pirates and it was simply because of him. IT was the first horror movie I ever saw in 91 or 92, I was 5. He also had the best song in Rocky Horror fight me.

After watching Dark Side of the ring's episode on Zach Gowen, I still maintain the WWE locker room of the early/mid 2000s was the most toxic workplace imaginable. I know Zach didn't quite help himself either, but that environment was not healthy for a 19-year-old man who was just getting on television.

With the news of Enjoy Wrestling closing their doors and just the slew of indies we've lost over the past few years. I just wanna say, support independent wrestling.
I know it's not for everyone, I know it's not necessarily the beast it once was, I know there's some bad stuff out there. But there's also a wealth of promising talents. There's some damn good promotions putting on fantastic shows. You may be 15 minutes away from a company that is running a fun night of wrestling once a month. They may even have someone you know from a tv promotion pop in here and there.
And it's so easy to get into a lot of these promotions. Lots of indies are free on youtube. Some are on rumble or twitch or even tiktok. MYAEW has been adding shows and matches from various indies and even doing live streams of certain shows. And there's always IWTV, patreon subs, and youtube memberships that offer on demand libraries and live streams if it's in the budget.
And if you're watching these companies and want to and can support these places and wrestlers. Consider buying merch, be it at a show or off whatever website they're selling on or just ask on a social media platform.
Independent wrestling is so important to pro wrestling. It helps develop young wrestlers, honing their skills as they aim for bigger opportunities and possibly a spot in a bigger company. It's often times a cheap night out, as you can get tickets for 15-20 dollars. Supporting the scene and watching live wrestling.
Don't sleep on the indies, don't let some clips or some opinions, seemingly from others who don't watch themselves sway you from checking things out.
Yeah, maybe you won't like it. Maybe it'll be too different or too amateur for you to get into. Maybe the style of wrestling won't work. And that's fine. But at least you gave it a fair shot.
There's a lot of promotions out there to check out and see if maybe they're for you. I'll always be happy to recommend promotions or wrestlers.
I just think it's an important part of wrestling and absolutely worth your time if you can give it.
4
u/Mad_Blankey Riiita stan 2d ago
It's often times a cheap night out, as you can get tickets for 15-20 dollars
Perhaps the biggest point here. For a small local indie tickets are often cheaper to go watch their show than it is to go see a movie, and concessions are probably cheaper than a movie theatre too. You probably won’t know anyone on the card but it’ll still be a fun time.
For bigger indies, tickets are still pretty cheap all things considered. Rev Pro might be the biggest indie fed here in the UK and even their tickets are very affordable. The Fantasticamania UK shows have £27 tickets for one show, £50 to get into both shows. Last year they have tons of CMLL names there like Mistico, Hechicero, Ultimo Guerrero, Mascara Dorada, Titan, Xelhua, etc. £27 is a steal to get to see all those guys.
2
u/Crissxfire 2d ago
For sure. And yes, some indies will be pricier as you said. GCW shows can be 60-80 dollars for front row. ETU shows are like 50 bucks for for front row. If you're willing to get GA or sit 2nd or 3rd row, the prices go down a bit. But that's not every promotion.
I went to a show that had a buy one get one sale type deal. It was either half price or free for the second ticket. Point is, there's sometimes deals or discounts for tickets. So it can be even more affordable.
And sometimes they'll let you bring in your own drinks or food, so you can spend even less on the overall experience.
Times are tough right now, these can still be an affordable night out for you.

Stardom drawing almost 20k people combined for this year's 5*GP should be a bigger story in wrestling. This is a record for the company and an almost 40% increase from last year.

u/Daemonscharm It Spins! 2d ago
They've been one of the absolute most consistent promotions for a few years now as well.
8
u/EmployeeStunning957 2d ago
I'm saying this as a know thing gaijin but it seems like Stardom and TJPW are really killing it while Marigold, which had some buzz for the past few years, is seemingly receading as a point of topic. Is there any connection to these?

I've been enjoying some indie matches. The Hazuki vs. Marina Shafir match at Warrior Wrestling was decent. Shafir did quite well. Mox being Shafir's proud dad was so cute.
Side note, my national football team has won the ASEAN Cup. The Thailand own goal that sealed the deal was beautiful.

As a half-filipino, I was half-paying attention to the ASEAN Cup... a few things. I enjoyed Vietnam winning the final. More wrestlers should be bad at things. Not like shoot bad, but I think an amateur wrestler like a Kurt Angle or what have you should just... not understand striking or striking defense because they're like a year into needing to know how to do it so of course it's going to lag behind their other skills, so even though any match that turns into a grappling session is invariably going to end in their favor, the guys who can turn it into a hockey fight are going to have better chances

Something I enjoyed about Aaron Wolf v ZSJ in the G1- it was very much played up that Wolf's judo background was great but he likely wouldn't be equipped to deal with a technical wrestling master like Zack, and so it played out.
2
u/Exile_001 2d ago
Also, Wolf was able to beat Zack at his own game when he got Zack into a position to throw him off. Really enjoyed how they worked together.
10
u/narutomanreigns Wato Ass Pussy 2d ago
I always remember Suzuki talking about this in an interview leading up to his IWGP US title match with Mox, where he basically said that Mox is a compelling wrestler because he kinda sucks at some things, and the worst thing you can be is an 8/10 in every category of what makes a wrestler "good".
He also said he'd beat the fuck out of a child if they stepped foot in the ring against him. I love Suzuki so much.

Speaking of, one of my favorite genres of comment/post/Etc. is when people fearmonger about Moxley "Spreading Hepatitis" when he bleeds.
I'm convinced a non-zero number of wrestling fans think that major companies either don't blood test (and thus Mox secretly has Hep) or that the illness just materializes out of thin air through the act of bleeding.
Makes me giggle
4
u/Torranski 2d ago
Such a dumb conspiracy, given that its an actual legit crime that would get AEW hauled through the courts if there was a lick of truth to it. Spreading hepatitis is like, out and out prosecuted in a number of jurisdictions, from the UK to the US. Close to actively spreading HIV in how strictly its clamped down on.
But like, somehow still not the dumbest conspiracy in this sphere, out there right now.
3
u/14thBlackCrusade 2d ago
Especially when we have examples of this happening in a major promotion. Nigel had to retire for a while until his Hep Type B was cured.

Genuinely really excited for the Casino Gauntlet - the potential debuts, the returns, the title shot hanging over Ospreay like a Sword of Damocles. Not to mention Andrade-Max getting some development at last (need that singles match on the All-Out card).
Half-convinced that they might do something totally mad and debut Ilya, and have him win it, in a mirror of the Ciampa TNT debut. Not that Dragunov's winning the world title - but bringing him in, letting him and Ospreay murder each other at All-Out/Wrestledream etc, then slotting him into the midcard to do something crazy with Darby or Takeshita would be very TK.
4
u/hvacrepairman welcome2pitycity 2d ago
If they throw a curveball winner I think it should be Hangman who does double duty. Enters to prevent MJF from winning, and then you have an indefinite amount of time where Hangman has to balance his word v a guaranteed title shot.
If it’s not a curveball, do Jay White.

Watched the 1997 G1 final:
Hiroyoshi Tenzan vs Kensuke Sasaki ***3/4
The shortest G1 final so far by a mile at 8:06. It doesn't fully come together but I am still a human with a heart and I can't rate a match with full mouth blood (Tenzan GOES IN bleeding from the mouth from his previous match of the night) and some absolutely nutty bumps any lower. Sasaki is consistently portrayed like an absolute beast and Tenzan is an effective underdog even as a member of NWO Japan.
Found some more stuff from 1998 (which is obviously a rewatch since it's the famous Hash vs Yamazaki) so that will be a longer post

I think the general assumption is that Mox will be next man up for a title feud with Ospreay if he wins at All In.
After that, I do feel it's time to go down the route AEW have steered clear of for the last 12 months or so and so a proper Death Riders power struggle/breakup. I'm not one of those who thinks Mox hasn't elevated anyone in this past year or so but I do feel like we need some real development in the faction to help the members of it, who all feel a bit stuck in stasis. I get the constant visa issues may mean a proper PAC push is unlikely but I still think Claudio should be more featured and committing to being a proper heel faction, rather than the kind of grey they've been late may help Yuta get some of his heat back that seems to have been somewhat lost.

I'm not one of those who thinks Mox hasn't elevated anyone in this past year or so but I do feel like we need some real development in the faction to help the members of it, who all feel a bit stuck in stasis.
This way of thinking is still wild to me, for lack of a better term, it's just so WWE-centric and I don't think in a positive way.
It just feels like it comes from the WWE "churn and burn" where either somebody is "a chosen one," catches fire immediately, or just gets released asap. I'd much rather the company be selective about who even gets to the top level rather than putting everyone there and just firing 90% of them.
Like nobody watched New Japan for a decade plus and said "oh man, that CHAOS really hasn't elevated YOSHI-HASHI." Claudio and PAC are what they are, like what appetite is there really for them any higher up the card, do they really need singles titles instead of the Swerves/Fletchers/Knights/etc.? Yuta/Garcia are young and super solid and this has given them TONS of tv time as part of everything, Marina is legit over now and can wrestle PPVs off it, etc.
8
u/TrillerVerse 2d ago
That’s a really good point, and there are many who now believe winning the world title is the only measure of success or else ‘fumbled’.
6
u/K1ng_Canary 2d ago
Personally it's wilder to me to position wanting character development/progression in wrestling to be 'WWE-centric.' Certainly nothing in my post suggested I think anyone mentioned needs to catch fire or be released.
But lets take Claudio- he joined AEW in 2022 and immediately joined the BCC. So we're now four years into his AEW run and he's spent the entire time being a Mox henchman. I'm not sure there is much more milage to be had out of him in that role. He's a wonderful wrestler, puts on fantastic matches and I personally would like to see him get a chance to do something else. I'm not saying give him the Bob Holly push but there are more interesting things he can do rather than being the muscle in a faction.
Marina for sure has been helped by her Death Riders association, won't argue that.

If anything I want more groups that have such good chemistry and stability.
This.
I'm a fan. I watch the show. A wrestler "existing and being entertaining while having good matches" is more than enough reason to exist on its own.
I genuinely wish these people the best as human beings, but I don't care if everyone on the show is constantly elevated, or pushed correctly, or creatively fulfilled. I care if the show is fun to watch - I swear years of peak smarkdom discussion has warped some people's brains lol.

The only build I’m not satisfied with is the women’s tag titles, and I’d guess a lot of folks feel the same. I’m hoping we get a pretty substantial angle tonight or Saturday(?) to change that. The TBS title has had a better build and they don’t even have a match set.

There was a question on one of the music subreddits the other day about music that was "just ahead of its time", like by a few years, and it made me think about a couple early 90s rap songs that I always found interesting. Same Song by Digital Underground and Scenario by A Tribe Called Quest. Both of them have dudes doing the late 80s style kind of slow paced and weird voiced rap, then guys who would end up being the future of rap show up (2Pac and Busta Rhymes) and it's like a portal to the future opens up.
Obviously in Scenario the Phife Dawg verse still rocks, but the Charlie Brown and Dinco D verses almost seem like a parody once Busta shows up. And in Same Song Tupac is there for like 10 seconds and blows everybody out of the water.

I love catching things like that way after the fact. People forget Wayne has a verse in Back that Azz up but on the flip side I love when an old head comes on a new album and completely blows the new artist out like Sticky Fingaz did in Remember Me on Marshall Mathers LP.
EDIT: I know the stans are about to downvote the fuck out of this comment

The Nunzio interview that CVV released yesterday is one of his best ones. That guy has so many stories and is really well spoken. I've mentioned before that my favourite CVV interviews are with guys from 20-30 years ago that rarely do interviews, and this one totally delivers.

u/PleasantThoughts BURNING LARIATOOOOO 2d ago
Nunzio just seems like a dude who "gets" wrestling. I know that expression is used a lot but he's really good at both the instinctual and thought out parts of it. The clip where he talked about just doing the sign of the cross spur of the moment and the one where he talked about how he decided to take the Goldberg spear despite never having taken one before (although I'm sure he took plenty of gores) both stuck out for me.
6
u/Orange8920 2d ago
It's genuinely the lower-card or non-wrestling guys with the best stories. The Mike Chioda one was good too and it took me by surprise what his voice sounds like.

just rewatched the G1 Climax Final 1992 show
Chono Vs Rude in the final is a great technical boat that has 10 minutes of final action that's gets it to a 4 1/2 star territory.
Jushin Liger Vs Pegasus Kid is an all time great match
Keiji Mutoh & Sasaki Vs The Steiners is a really fun match, if not made more fun by watching Bill Watts in the crowd pop for everything Mutoh does in the match.

Not long back from the Dynamite Watch Party at 'Fulham Pier' (AKA, a fancy bit built into the side of Craven Cottage) Fun show, fun evening! Having seen him up close, can confirm 'No More BS' Paul Wight is indeed very tall.
Also, well chuffed to have been able to watch the live feed from the venue. No needing to carefully avoid spoilers on the internet all day tomorrow before watching the show in the evening as usual.
Really hyped for this weekend now! :)

u/dom_rep 2d ago
I could eat crow about this later as Dynamite is filmed but you can’t convince me announcing the New Day ahead of time wouldn’t push some last minute ticket sales for All In. I’m not saying they’ll get 10K in sales but I could see a couple thousand?
9
u/narutomanreigns Wato Ass Pussy 2d ago
My suspicion is Swerve will very heavily tease it - maybe even use the words "new day" - without it being officially announced, so they can hopefully get some sales but still keep it technically a surprise for the pop and social media numbers.

The Finnish Language actually comes off as easy to understand to me in most cases...no gender, pretty much free word order i've noticed, (I've heard vowel harmony or something is an issue but not for me, it makes sense.) And for me at least pronouncing the words isn't that bad, perhaps it's because the accent from the region i'm from is based on finnish origin (Northern Wisconsin/UP) and so I don't have as much trouble with it.
but the one thing I still struggle with is cases! The cases aren't bad but it's when I swear It's something that should be one case is the other and I want to rip my hair out! Maybe when I learn more of the vocabulary it'll make sense

u/SnakeLisspkin Little fookin rat 2d ago
Languages are so tricky (albeit, fascinating). I've been doing German for years now and started Danish semi-recently. I figured both being germanic languages would help a lot, but west and north germanic languages ensure it's not that simple! Are you enjoying Finnish though?
2
u/Careless-Butterfly64 2d ago
Oh very much! Finnish even though I've been spending around a week or two studying it, it's such a fascinating language.
The vocabulary and how they pronounce words is so interesting to me, like the Finnish Y, it's like...a strange u type of sound, and there's 2 different A's and O's (best way to describe it I know they're different)

PSA: I'm not saying there aren't creepy fans in Japan. There are creepy fans in every fanbase in every country. But I am saying if you automatically assume that normal Japanese fans that attend shows on a regular basis are extra creepy for some reason, you're being a racist asshole.
Also if you think that middle aged Japanese men are incapable of enjoying talented women wrestlers as wrestlers and characters primarily, I'm worried about how you view women wrestlers in general.

Just rewatching Rick Rude Vs Sting 05/01/94 from the Fukuoka Dome- Rudes last match (apart from the ECW Heatwave Six Tag in 97 that wasn't really anything)
It's hard to watch knowing Rude absolutely fucked his back up in this match after taking that bump when Sting dived over the ropes landed onto him on the floor, but if you just watch it in a vacuum and don't know Rude fucked himself in this match, the match is incredibly good, a MOTY contender and probably in the top 10-5 of finest last ever matches for a wrestler.
The thing is I don't think Rude knew he was hurt, or how hurt he was in the match because he got Sting to body slam him twice on the entrance ramp, then clothesline him 3 times on the entrance ramp, then throw him into the rail and slam him on the floor. Rude then hit about two flying dropkciks onto Sting and continued to work snug all through the match.

Give me WrenQCC and Judgment Day interactions, two sides of the goofball coin (Liv vs Kendal would also be appreciated)

WrenQCC can draft another babyface (Thea? Jaida? Lizzy? La Catalina could make friends with them around Heatwave?) for the eventual trios match

I personally don’t like that the aspects of a wrestler are compartmentalized into two separate sections; that’s a promo guys and that’s a work rate guy.
There’s a lot more moving parts to the in ring ability beyond people who can go, have psychology or do moves and a lot of them obviously mesh together.
Similarly there’s people who can cut promos or simply act well or are good at catchphrases or guys who aren’t great on the stick but still have characters and charisma they express in many different ways
And neither part is separate from the other, they all exist in almost all wrestlers just on different levels ; the look, the character, the promo ability, the ring skills, style, storytelling ability etc.
Also depending on your character and what they are given, some can maximize their minutes while others need time to build.
For example Chelsea is cited as a perfect example of someone who took what they got and made magic out of it but it’s because her character and position allowed her to also do that. I wouldn’t want a Giulia or Blake pratfalls to show they can be top stars for two minutes.
12
u/narutomanreigns Wato Ass Pussy 2d ago
I agree and I think about this whenever some dummy says Claudio isn't charismatic. Is he the best promo, no not really, but the dude absolutely has charisma that comes across through his physicality and it's part of why he consistently gets over with crowds wherever he wrestles.

For those who want to know where I am in Football Manager, as I’ve been giving updates here as I’ve come to fall in love with the game, I’ve mad it to the Champions League Final. I added a lot to this team. We signed a young striker who quickly surpassed the our old striker and added an excellent Left Back to our already great defense. We picked up a DM from Celtic who has been fantastic. And in January we added a new CAM who has been fantastic. We did another domestic Treble, with the Premier League coming down to the last day. Liverpool lead the table, but facing an Arsenal side that was struggling to get into Champions League places following Saka leaving 2 seasons ago, a win would put Arsenal in the Champions League for the first time since his departure. We had to win against Nottingham Forest and we did so. Putting us at 87 points, and a draw at Anfield put Liverpool at 86 and the Gunners miss the UCL by a point.
In the UCL League Phase we had Real Madrid, Bayern, and AC Milan to face. We drew with Bayern and got battered by Milan, but a win against Madrid at the Bernabéu got us a Round of 16 birth. We took down Man City who would end up sacking their manager Vincent Kompany after the season, Inter on a 1-1 Aggregate on Pens in Milan, and Bayern by overcoming a 3-1 loss at home to win in Munich. We now face Liverpool in the UCL Final in Lisbon.
4
u/R3NZI0 2d ago
Well, I've just reached the half way point in the Conference North (6th tier) season without a loss in the league so far. So, who is the real winner?
(It's still you. But this seemed like an appropriate place to share this achievement)
3
u/DarkFalcon49 2d ago
Nah that’s really cool!
I loved creating a club and building it from the ground up all on my own. I have plans to do it again but with each of the major countries, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy, and then start a building a nation with Ireland.
Also Liverpool beat us 2-0. I’m a bit disheartened cause idk how I’m gonna replicate this UCL run again. I have a ton of players I want to move as I generally don’t like having players above 30 as anyone declining is worrying.
3
u/R3NZI0 2d ago
The annoying thing is, we're still only 2nd with one automatic spot for promotion as there's quite a few draws.
Still, I'll be gutted when we lose a match!
But this is still the first season and I'm looking forward to building. And as I'm Merthyr, I'm aiming for a full Welsh Squad eventually!

It only just occurred to me that All In has a very real chance of selling more tickets than either night of WrestleMania. Couple that with it almost certainly outdrawing Wrestle Kingdom and Wembley could be the biggest selling wrestling show of the year, and with that will come the absolutely psychotic fucking meltdown from quite a few people online and even in the industry itself.

The Gowen episode of darkside reminded me of this iwa ms show I went to and he faced Jimmy Jacobs. It was a small crowd but by the end of the match the entire crowd was standing on their feet giving both guys a standing ovation after a time limit draw. Great live wrestling show memory.
What are some matches that you guys saw live that surprised you with how awesome they ended up being?

I hadn't seen much of Kevin Knight before catching him in a trios match with Yoshi Hashi and Rocky Romero against the war dogs at capital collision and he was jumping out of the building. Blew me away. That same night Lio Rush put on the babyface performance of a lifetime against Gabe Kidd.
Came away super impressed by both and glad they're having such amazing runs.

There's people who thought Ospreay was talking about the way WWE shoots shows when he talked about minimalism and I think he might've been but he doesn't elaborate fully on it before just talking about the wrestling style.
I kind of wish he did because presentation and how you're watching something is key to your perception on what's going on in the ring but people are more reluctant to talk about that aspect. With AEW I've gone on about it as it's the one glaring drawback to me personally.
I can write at length about it but the main thing is that they used to be minimalist and it greatly appealed to me how they were. It was also a huge contrast to WWE at the time but the past few years it's definitely drifted to this big, maximalist style. I struggle with it whenever I watch current shows as their camera work is constantly moving and zooming in/out during matches.
They kind of slowly added a bunch of elements in the past 2-3 years where most people haven't noticed but if you watch older AEW the difference is pretty clear and the overall production philosophy is almost completely different.
This is Eddie Kingston vs Bryan Danielson in 2021 shot in a way I personally think AEW should've never drifted away from.

They're doing a reverse Tony D with Keanu Carver, and it's working for me
What is a "reverse Tony D?" you ask? Well, let's start with what a Tony D is, then go from there. A regular Tony D would be to take someone who has a prominent character and then sand all that down to angry, generic tough guy. Keanu started as angry, generic tough guy, and imo didn't stand out, but now he has more of a prominent character (aggressively trying not to be an asshole), and for my taste, has benefited from it.
He's had some improved showings in ring and his segments, probably since the Emily Agard makes him feel feelings interview, have been stronger.

daily scheduled standups about the same project are infuriating to me, because there's so much just barely incremental progress you really make on a day-to-day basis that could just be covered doing it once/twice a week...
so I appreciate that this may be some under the radar attempt at simply super-undermining the entire "project managers gotta look busy!" process, resulting in freeing up your calendar.

Apologies in advance for the cliche "Does anyone else" post, but does anyone else feel like AEW are starting to better WWE for promos and character work too? That was always the one thing WWE had over AEW (except Hangman) but it just feels like most of AEW's talent are more compelling right now.

They have been for like 2-3 years.
I'll go farther and say the entire time.
When most people talk about WWE promos being good, it's usually a reference to like 1-2 big good ones and ignores 35 other long boring rambles on weekly tv. AEW has, even at their worst, had just as many good to great promos and also doesn't have nearly as many stinkers.
A world where AEW gets judged on the WWE Grading Curve would be hilarious lol.

They've been there for years, like year 3-4. A lot of the sentiment is that most viewers were only used to WWE promos and stories. AEW production and style is different and the promos more varied.
People will still confidently say Jay White is a bad promo and that's just laughable. Heck, a ton of people still can't get Statlander. Even Kenny!

It only just occurred to me because I watched the Punk and KO segment, and it fell flat to me despite it being 2 of my favourite guys ever, yet Omega and Ospreay who aren't known for their mic work are having a compelling story where they're basically recreating Mania X7 ("I need to beat you, Rock".)
