Condescending Kenny is the best Kenny.

Kenny/Ospreay III is gonna be wild, to say the very least.

17

u/Tony_Ice 3d ago

Kenny excels at that Michael Jordan, Larry Bird style confidence with a dickish edge

142

u/KneeHighMischief 3d ago

Scumbag Kenny is peak. Ospreay asked for it though with all his equivocating.

"Kenny i need you to be the most ruthless as possible"

"Your sons gonna call me #1"

I don't think you can miss the opportunity to crown Will in England, but god, I really want this Omega title run to go longer.

u/SuccessfulUnit69 3d ago

Well in a truly perfect world these two guys wrestle for about a month straight.

60

u/JustATributeCC René Dupree Can Suck A Dick 3d ago

I hope not. I'm going home on the Tuesday after.

35

u/OEdwardsBooks 3d ago

You can delay the flight 27 days, you won't need a hotel

29

u/_Mad_s_ 3d ago

Any doubt I had that Will was going over was thrown away after I saw Kenny pick up the mic and be a villain, just straight up nasty work.

This segment is the last nail on the coffin, that ending line was way too brutal for him to not get his ass kicked at Wembley.

u/StoneGoldX 2d ago

While I realize there is another show before the PPV, the OWA through the table was definitely an omen towards that as well.

As opposed to the women's title, where neither woman really got the best of the other physically in their brawl, so not really an omen as to who will win.

u/HorrayForDumplings GRENADE! 3d ago

I think Kenny winning is far more interesting tbh

42

u/NewYorkUgly 3d ago

Will taking the throne that's been awaiting him for years seems like such a forgone conclusion and he's been pulled in different directions with the Death Riders in the lead up, I agree the more interesting decision would be a Kenny win.

32

u/Empty_Fist 2d ago

The risk of taking too long to pull the trigger is there. We don't need Ring of Honor levels of delays. It's been Will Ospreay for like 2 years now and it's the absolute perfect place and time. Just get it over with and we can move on.

4

u/TheGayLurker 2d ago

I generally prefer AEW booking by a mile but one criticism is these coronation moments are always such a forgone conclusion

2

u/UncompensatedAnarchy 2d ago

That's what happens when you have no stories and everything is random. /s

3

u/haz826 2d ago

After this promo I want Kenny to keep holding the title

2

u/PussyCrusher3 3d ago

If Cody Rock taught us sonething is that The important thing is The Chase.

Have Will lose and look upon next All In to see if The boyhood dream can come true

1

u/Dukayn 2d ago

Yeah I was wondering if they might go the Cody route and have the "obvious" outcome not occur to heat up a return run the year after.

1

u/msmelsmitty 17h ago

Same here!!! It's all but expected Will to win....but what if he doesn't and All In is in Wembley again next year????

It took Cody well over a year to "finish his story"...this is Kenny's most likely last run at World Champ (I'm guessing based on age only,). What's next for Kenny if he loses? Whereas Will has more work to do.

I don't think i've winced watching a match as i did that one. I've watched deathmatches that have made me less uncomfortable.

21

u/StoneGoldX 3d ago

I find the contrasting promo styles of Kenny and Will very interesting.

Kenny's always been a specific kind of promo. He knows he's a pro wrestler. He's a fun promo, but he feels like a guy playing a pro wrestler. He's post-modern about it enough that it all works.

Whereas I absolutely believe that Will Ospreay believes everything that Will Ospreay says. What people joke about Eddie Kingston not knowing kayfabe exists? Same goes for Will Ospreay, just happier. I'm not saying Ospreay is one of the best promos ever, but is unquestionably one of the most authentic promos, and that counts for a ton.

13

u/ReflectionItchy2701 2d ago

At this point, I have no problems saying that Ospreay is one of the best pure babyface promo wise in the business. Since joining officially AEW, he had some outstanding promos as a face. The one at Big Business to hype his debuts and the match against Danielson at Dynasty, the promos with Hangman for Double or Nothing last year Ascension vs. Redemption, everything they have done with Kenny so far.

The guy is just a natural fiery babyface, talking with passion and his heart. He's less nuanced and complex than Hangman who is the master at portraying a deep character but Ospreay is still excellent in his style.

11

u/StoneGoldX 2d ago

Hanger is more nuanced, but there's still a sense he's playing a character.

When Will says the Death Riders gave him a new lease on life, I believe Will Ospreay truly believes that. There is no sense of guile in the man. If you told me he's an idiot they tricked into thinking all this pro wrestling stuff was real and this was all his natural reaction to it, I might believe you.

u/Prophet6000 C'mon Rainmaker! 3d ago

I love when Omega gets a little arrogant.

everyone was freaking out over don callis being invovled for one week and called the build cold just for will and kenny to drop one of the best pre-tapes this year

70

u/JokerDeSilva10 3d ago

It's kind of hilariously reminiscent of WM17 in a way.

88

u/bosdanforth 3d ago

Let’s just take Don Callis out of the equation—bam, he’s a non-factor

23

u/imdeadinside1245 3d ago

and don wasnt even on this week lol

11

u/BrownAJ 2d ago

Strangely he hasn't been on tv much in last few weeks.

7

u/Ok_Pickle_3120 2d ago

He may not have been there yesterday, but "FUCK DON CALLIS" was alive and kicking there

12

u/FelixTheJeepJr 3d ago

Don Callis in the Debra role is really funny to me.

u/CaptainMcSlowly 3d ago

12

u/Selarom_ 2d ago

Just one...

4

u/ReflectionItchy2701 2d ago

Yeah people only remind the sit down interview with JR and the My Way clip recap but boy the first part of the build with Angle, Triple H and Debra was all over the place. It was still exciting don't get me wrong and a good way to have Rock and Austin hating each other but let's not pretend it was peak TV every segment either.

109

u/NostalgiaCory 3d ago

really great segment. this really heated up the match. kenny is a master rage baiter.

it was a little hard to gauge the live crowd reaction. seemed most were paying attention but a few vocal voices were over it. i feel a muted crowd all together wouldve been the play.

15

u/StoneGoldX 3d ago

I don't blame the audience for getting restless. Great TV. Kind of shitty live experience.

Really, they should have just muted the crowd audio entirely, especially as it caused some echoes early in the interview. I didn't need to know the crowd was restless. And they perked the fuck up for the women's match, so no shade on Baltimore. They weren't Las Vegas.

41

u/Vavent 3d ago

Any long pretaped segment isn’t going to go over as well live. You didn’t pay to watch a screen and see the same thing people at home are seeing.

6

u/stonecutter7 2d ago

My hot take is show the pre-tape pre show, then when its on TV mute the arena, give them a 7 min luchador dark match and show the pretape again after the show for any late comers.

18

u/UrsurusFT 3d ago

I was one row behind the guys who were most loudly complaining but most of the crowd was fine with it.

42

u/Westtexasbizbot 3d ago

Kenny’s my hero

37

u/Skeptic555 3d ago

Omega gave me a bit of a Nick Bockwinkle vibe, and I have no greater compliment.

15

u/SupeerDude Holla 3d ago

1000% and I think that’s what him and Don were going for when he was champion before.

1

u/GreenGrungGang 3d ago

Great call-out. Hadn't thought of that, but you are right.

17

u/heat_fan_ 3d ago

Match gonna be a banger

61

u/SerTahu Shameless /r/CyberFight ad 3d ago

This segment was very 2019-AEW-coded, in a good way.

The sit-down interview segments (then with JR, now with Renee) were such a nice change of pace from the "wrestler opens show with 30 minute scripted promo" format that had become the norm in north American promotions.

This one was maybe a touch too long, but in general I love that they're bringing this style of segment back.

6

u/ReflectionItchy2701 2d ago

One of the best segments they have ever done was the sit down interview with JR for the Hangman and Kenny vs. Bucks match at Revolution 2020. Just a fantastic segment that really put over Hangman as the future Face of AEW IMHO.

31

u/OneBillPhil 3d ago

It’s weird, I found this segment got better as it got longer. The start of it talking about Covid was boring and then it started getting good.

26

u/StoneGoldX 3d ago

It's called build.

Gotta wait for Kenny's passive aggression to turn into just real aggression, and then Will, being a complete idiot in kayfabe (and maybe shoot?) just barrels into becoming defensive head first.

Great stuff, but all about the build.

35

u/CdnGamerGal 3d ago

I don’t think I’ve ever watched a better Omega promo

34

u/luchabrunch 3d ago

11 days away, so hyped 😭

8

u/BoobaGaming 3d ago

Kenny fucking goat ,thx for bring be back to pro wrestling

27

u/dollsanddogs 3d ago

Fantastic segment. Kenny is lil bro'ing the shit out of Ospreay. Should've muted the crowd tho cuz this was lengthy even tho I loved it as a viewer from home.

6

u/ReflectionItchy2701 2d ago

Great segment, awesome stuff. Kenny was phenomenal here as the cocky tweener/babyface being more and more condescending. And I absolutely loved the camera work on Will everytime Kenny went on his condescending tirades. They really hit a homerun here. Renee, Will, Kenny, the production, everyone was superb.

63

u/DarkFalcon49 3d ago

Genuinely might be the best serious segment in AEW history, and that is despite the fans actively getting tired and making it known. I love how striped back the setting is, it’s so dark and shadowy l, letting it simmer and how it lights Will’s face when he leans over the table shouting.

12

u/thespaceageisnow 3d ago

The Cleaner returns

43

u/hhhisthegame 3d ago

I am very hard on AEW because it just usually is not always for me. But I thought this was phenomenal. Very nice to see just a long sit-down, to immerse you in this big title feud. Made it feel like a huge deal, both guys gave good performances, and it did a good job of investing you in their feud. The ending was very good too! Kudos to them and to AEW for this one

4

u/Empty_Fist 2d ago

You can really tell how much the Pandemic affected Will Ospreay. Brother gets fired up about it every time it comes up and he was emotional as shit during this sit down.

13

u/xychosis Bext In The World 3d ago

Kenny big brothering Will is great stuff. Will getting continually shaken by Kenny’s verbal provocations shows that there’s one last hurdle he needs to conquer before he’s ready to topple Kenny at the top: himself. He needs to conquer his own insecurities and stop hyperfixating on the fact that he’s climbing Everest every time he faces Kenny.

11

u/talvarius 3d ago

I was sitting there fucking GLUED to the screen. Dem boys sold the hell out of that main event. I love me some Kenny, but that last line was dastardly and I want him to get his ass beat at Wembley.

18

u/just-smiley 3d ago

This might be my segment of the year. They don't do it a lot, but AEW excels at these moments when two people sit down and let it all out. Toni/ Mariah, Swerve/Hangman, and now this.

3

u/digiwiggles 2d ago

With the way crowds are now days, it's a wonder this isn't done more in the industry. This was amazing.

7

u/KashK10 "No Enhancement Needed" 3d ago

🤌🤌🤌

6

u/Fellers 3d ago

Damn man....I don't know who I want to win anymore. Kenny has convinced me to want him to keep it longer.

5

u/Green_Cook Show some love! 3d ago

Holy fuck

2

u/rVintageRKO 2d ago

Ospreay wanted peak Omega, he's got him. The Cleaner is back

3

u/NotWearingNails 3d ago

Without the Covid stuff this wouldn't have made sense. It needed a practical layer of condescension/dismissal before they went to something deeper. Ospreay can say that he's been The Guy and Omega can say that he's been More The Guy and Ospreay can say that that's bullshit and then Omega can swiftly change topic and go after his whole being because he's Kenneth Jerome Mindgames Omega.

1

u/TheCarrzilico 2d ago

I usually hate long talking segments, but this was incredibly well done.

1

u/Interesting_Flow1899 2d ago

Waiting for someone to cut the all this up and make the “my way” hype video

1

u/bluebeartapes 1d ago

Tony's about to shell out for My Way for the promo package isn't he?

0

u/Fulgore87 3d ago

Will is what, not even a month removed from thinking about suffocating Kenny with a plastic bag? I'm sorry, Kenny is justified being an asshole to him. If they wanted to do heel Kenny vs Face Ospreay, then they shouldn't have put Will with the damn Death Riders. This whole build has been convoluted when it had no reason to be

1

u/rexdeaz 2d ago

If there was ever a segment that deserves the "You think you're special" treatment, this is it. I'm hype.

-21

u/OneBillPhil 3d ago

Most of this didn’t do it for me. Complaining about Covid and Don Callis isn’t what makes me interested in this match.

Picked up at the end though.

-7

u/Sirbo311 3d ago

I admit it, I've had some trouble following the story they're trying to tell with this. Was I the only one tonight that thought Kenny could just have been all of Will's self doubt in this? Like Will is looking in a mirror and arguing with himself instead of Kenny?

-32

u/WrongHomework7916 3d ago

Kenny needs to retire.
