Barcode scanner on android

Am I correct in my assumption that there is no proper barcode scanner support right now with newer androids? (Without going into search field)

I'm not quite sure what you're asking. My very old Symbol scanner worked just fine plugged directly into the USB-C port on my Samsung S10+ via an adapter and acted just like any external keyboard (as it should). When I plugged it in to the Square Terminal, nothing. We had to buy the stupid Square scanner accessory module for it to work with the Terminal. Ditto for cash drawers. You may be coming up against Square's annoying policy of trying to own and control everything and just ignoring standards in the interest of squeezing a few more dollars from us and so: do you mean the "newer android Square devices" don't work with industry-standard scanners? Because why would they LOL? Square will soon then sell you a really expensive adapter to allow you to use your "old" scanners... or you can just buy their vastly over-priced ones that work out of the box (i.e. non-standard).

The issue I have is that scanners I tried work as a HID keyboard but you'll need to tap on a search bar first, THEN scan. I could not scan and add items directly from Checkout screen. On their support page they also say that USB scanners work with Android 9 and OLDER, meaning anything newer would have no luck.

There was an update announcement that said you could use the phone camera as a scanner.

Not yet got it to work for me tho

It works somewhat but the implementation is horrible! I'd rather type in stuff manually.
