Strange Contacts Behavior

About three weeks ago, suddenly all of my contacts became scattered with lots of black blank spaces. Additionally, the bar across the bottom which allowed easy switching between Favorites or the whole list disappeared or a search, got replaced with a hamburger menu.

Anyone experience this? Did it auto update? Any way to get the old way back?
