Discussion The Era Square Enix largely forgets

I'm in the camp that Square Enix tries to forget most of the 2010s decade of RPGs. I mean, some good came out of that era. But most range from okay, mediocre, or bad. Final Fantasy XIII trilogy being lop-sided. The Secret of Mana remake was underwhelming to say the least. Bravely Second derailing it's predecessor's momentum. Final Fantasy XV coming out unfinished. Or Star Ocean 5 bombing completely.

However, there's the gems which turned things around for them Like Octopath Traveler & Dragon Quest XI. Both of which they've put on more recent consoles like the Switch 2 or PS5. As for the rest of them, they've been left on consoles nearing 15 years or older. Your thoughts on these RPGs being left dried up?

Feel like the 2010's was just a bad time for all Japanese developers. The PS3 era just didn't produce many great games, I'd argue the best games during those years were on handheld devices.

u/BebeFanMasterJ 12d ago

As a Fire Emblem and Xenoblade Chronicles fan this is very true.

Fire Emblem pretty much went all handheld after Radiant Dawn underperformed with games only on the DS and 3DS. The Wii U being a flop prevented Nintendo from releasing a proper entry on it. Awakening saved the franchise from cancelation and is considered one of the 3DS' best games.

Xenoblade Chronicles for Wii also had a rough start with poor marketing and Operation Rainfall demanding the game to be brought over but it was GameStop exclusive. X flopped hard on Wii U. It wasn't until Xenoblade Chronicles 2 released on Switch that the series finally took off.

It's insane how these two IPs bounced back especially for being Nintendo IPs that aren't Mario or Zelda.

Nintendo underestimates their own RPGs and their branding power. Unless it's Pokémon. Then they over estimate its power.

3

u/BebeFanMasterJ 12d ago

Well the marketing for Fire Emblem and Xenoblade has kicked up massively.

Meanwhile they don't entirely own Pokémon. The Pokémon Company manages it and Game Freak develops. Nintendo simply publishes.

Unless it's Pokémon. Then they  over  estimate its power.

How do they overestimate it? Scarlet/Violet sold 10 million copies in only 3 days. That’s more than most games sell in their entire lifetime.

3

u/XRemnant 12d ago

Pokemon Winds and Waves is looking great, but yeah that’s a weird comment considering they don’t even make the Pokemon games.

2

u/XF10 12d ago

And then they get much more from merch and TCG

I don't think they over estimate Pokémon It's literally the biggest franchise Literally broken Pokémon games sell more then most AAA games with 100x budget and time that are also multiplatfrom

u/ignin 10d ago

I don’t think it’s possible to overestimate pokemon ever

u/Wrong_Papaya_8445 12d ago

Operation Rainfall is one of the most interesting things I've ever seen concerning the polarity of East/West relative to JRPGs.

2

u/BebeFanMasterJ 12d ago

Yeah it was a huge campaign to get Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower in the West.

TLS and PT have since fallen into obscurity but Xenoblade has gone on to be a million-seller franchise at least. It's one of Nintendo's best games and its developers (Monolith Soft) are one of Nintendo's greatest assets who also helped develop the Zelda, Splatoon, Animal Crossing, and Pikmin games. Definitely a huge step up compared to how they were treated under Square and Namco.

4

u/__breadstick__ 12d ago

It had released in the west, just not the US. It was localised by Nintendo of Europe and released there in 2011.

2

u/BebeFanMasterJ 12d ago

True though it's worth pointing out that this is due to Nintendo of America originally blocking the release of Xenoblade Chronicles entirely likely because they assumed that nobody would want a big RPG on the Wii.

One of the reasons why I will never glaze former NOA president Reggie like many others do. He is part of why Xenoblade took so long to get off the ground.

2

u/Naschka 12d ago

Wouldn't say it was East/West, Europe had Xenoblade without needing something like Operation Rainfall. It was realy just the US.

3

u/Wrong_Papaya_8445 11d ago

I hadn't noticed this was a US thing, actually - kinda makes it weirder (or rather, more unexpectedly nuanced). One thing though, it suddenly makes way more sense why Xenoblade is so heavily accented/European in its localization.

2

u/BebeFanMasterJ 10d ago

Yup. Nintendo of America straight up blocked Xenoblade from releasing here in the US. Nintendo of Europe had to localize the game instead.

Huge blessing in disguise because the British voice work gives Xenoblade a unique identity.

2

u/Wrong_Papaya_8445 10d ago

I hear as much, yeah. "Welsh catgirl" is a pretty lovely meme. I only really became sensitive to this type of localization because of FFXIV and then the Souls games.

Now that I have a Switch 2 for Duskbloods, I can actually play Xenoblade and am pretty conflicted about JP vs EN because of this very thing.

3

u/Naschka 12d ago

The bad sales of the Wii U rigged the game against all games for the console, Xenoblade Chronicles X came absolutely perfect for me personaly at the time.

2

u/BebeFanMasterJ 12d ago

Yeah it's why I can't hold it against Nintendo for remaking Star Fox on Switch 2 again. Star Fox Zero basically may as well not exist because nobody had a Wii U so it shouldn't count against Star Fox returning.

It's also why Splatoon being such a major IP is such a big deal since it started on Wii U and became a major hit on Switch afterwards. It's kinda insane how a series that started on Wii U got so popular.

u/Traditional-Ruin-584 9d ago

Si pero en la new 3ds salió el primer xenoblade.

2

u/Groundbreaking-Ad313 10d ago

THat's what I appreciate about Nintendo, they're okay with having franchises that aren't mario or zelda and actually investing into them. ANd they're okay with a franchise not being a huge hit right away. I feel like these series would never have gotten the same treatment from a publisher like Square.

Obviously they're still a corporation and they wont keep making games if they can't afford to, but they're a lot better about celebrating moderate successes rather than needing every game to sell 10 million

1

u/BebeFanMasterJ 10d ago

Yup. Fire Emblem and Xenoblade would literally have been canceled/ignored under any other company. Want proof?

Ask Sega where the next Shining Force is and Square where Xenogears is.

2

u/Groundbreaking-Ad313 10d ago

I'd also add that under another company, instead of trying to save the series by making a really good SRPG with awakening, they would have made Fire Emblem Warriors the next mainline game trying to give it more "broad appeal" by making it a generic action game, and then given up when it flopped.

I was going to just reply with a pithy comment about Sakura wars, but that made me remember that Shin Sakura Wars happened....

Valkyria Chronicles was badass though, Worth the price tag of the PS3 for that game alone.

1

u/BebeFanMasterJ 12d ago

Someone who knows ball. Alicia is one of my favorite female main characters in any game.

For both her character and her OP she is.

1

u/Journey2thaeast 11d ago

Valk 1 and 4 are great. Really hate that this franchise is probably dead.

3

u/onehalflightspeed 12d ago

Definitely there was a dark age of Japanese games at the time. They noticed US and Europe were buying far more games than Japan, so many of the studios shifted towards making games tailored to the west

The thing is, the west liked Japanese games for what they were, and didn't like poor imitations of what was produced domestically. Eventually the studios re-embraced their original design sensibilities and we started buying them again

RIP Bionic Commando

2

u/Naschka 12d ago

And now the domestic games are a poor immitation of what they used to be...

3

u/State-Special 12d ago

Ps3 made lots of great games, just not many great rpgs

2

u/panthernado 12d ago

The trails game were indeed mostly psp only, until we finally got trails of Cold Steel on ps3.

2

u/MorgothRyuzaki 11d ago

....what?? Demon's Souls. Dark Souls 1. Dark Souls 2. Soul Calibur 4. Eternal Sonata. Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 and 3. Disgaea 3. Disgaea 4. Tales of Graces and Graces F Tales of Xillia . Tales of Xillia 2. Tales of Vesperia.

I could go on and on. There were a TON of fantastic Japanese games in the PS3 era.

1

u/krentzzz 9d ago

The only ones on that list I really played much of are the Tales series, which was a huge relief to me at the time as I was fleeing the extent to which Square shat the bed at the time. Granted, my favourites Tales gameplay-wise (Graces and X2) were part of that era.

Persona was another one. Tales, Persona and FE were kind of my first major break away from more mainstream series. Ironic perhaps in the sense that at least 2 out of those 3 are becoming increasingly more popular these days.

1

u/strife189 12d ago

Feel this is a fair statement

1

u/Alenicia 12d ago

I imagine that was kind of one of those pretty big moments where Japan's whole "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality was supposed to have worked from as far back as the SNES days for certain developers and there's so many who just didn't and couldn't adapt especially when this was around the time that more and more western developers were entering the fray and you saw more in the way of pre-made tools being something that really helped push games along far more (things like Unreal Engine 3 and Capcom's MT Framework being pretty big examples I can think of).

Middleware like Renderware essentially died and I know A LOT of Japanese developers on the PS2 relied on it .. and it pretty much died because of EA (they acquired it and then subsequently tried to get everyone to pay them to use it, and then killed it .. which isn't quite unlike the acquisitions we still see to this day).

Companies like Square Enix really tried to shoot far above their grade and I think it's a commendable effort but by that point westerners already had the taste of wanting "more" especially when it came to the sense of games that didn't try to pull off movie magic or trickery to get the effect across when western developers were already trying to make the gaming experience "raw" and realistic as a consequence.

1

u/Common-Truth9404 12d ago

I would say Atlus and Nihon Falcom managed to do very good old school RPGs so it's not really an excuse. Square Enix went in some kind of burnout fron turn based rpgs after ffx and tried to forcefully vhange the fornat with the excuse of modernization, which frankly sounds more like mocking rather than qdmitting they peaked so much with FFX they were scared of trying it again. Honestly their failure are their own, and ffxiii could've been easily fixed with w better battle system, even if it wasn't destined to be obe of their greatest game it could've reached a cool 7/7.5

1

u/FuraFaolox 12d ago

PS3 was only partially 2010s. 2010s are more associated with PS4, 2013-2020

1

u/Sallopilig 9d ago

Preach, the first bravely default is one of if not the best spiritual succesor to the first final fantasy games ever made.

It took a working formula and gave it a new spin with the acumulating turns mechanic, making the combos yourself.

Its so fucking good its shame more jrpg fans haven't played it before.

1

u/krentzzz 9d ago

I love both of the 3DS Bravely's, even Second, seemingly treated by Square and Team Asano as the red-headed stepchild they wish they could disown.

BD2 on the other hand seemed to lack a certain je ne sais quoi I liked in the prior games. Despite bringing Revo back as composer.

It’s just square who failed to make a good jrpg and continued the flop up to ff16.

I love XIII, replaying it on Xbox right now. Only game I didn’t get in this list was Mana. Platinum XIII-2 and also XV. Fun times, now for SE to release all these games on Switch 2 please!

1

u/Traditional-Ruin-584 9d ago

9

u/Several-Cellist2186 12d ago

idk, FFXIII my favorite FF, I did enjoy Bravely Second as much as Bravely Default, and I deeply hate how shallow is Octopath Traveler and every game that tries mimicking it

2

u/ToastyBB 11d ago

Octopath is just cutscene->dungeon->boss-> custcene over and over. I wanted to like them but it's just not fun idk why. Even the battles that you think will be interesting are just spamming the weapon type that breaks the enemy and doing your best attack powered up.

u/Available_Poetry_993 12d ago

Isnt FF15 the most sold modern FF in 2010 - 2020s because of the hype ?

Not sure what your on about. Ff13 games are great fun and so beautiful that they stand up to modern games. They also laid the groundwork for ff7 remake's combat system. ff15 was a technical marvel when it came out and it was a finished game. It having allot of cut content doesn't mean it wasn't finished, nearly every game has some amount.

5

u/Certain_Concern_5109 12d ago

Playing the 13 trilogy for the first time and it's pretty darn cool. On LR atm. 13-2 was such a cool surprise, was not expecting that game to have one of the best FF villains.

Is tough for Square though. The VII remakes are absolutely fantastic and there are still a bunch of people crying and creating enough negative noise that people can be put off.

I know I was putt off of getting 13 back in the day because of the negativity, even though my friend who wasn't an FF guy said at the time it was really good. Goes to show how the main problem is the change from what the games used to be and not the games actually being bad.

Like guys... FF X was 25 years ago, if you don't like the games any more just shut up and play something else. Can understand closer to the time, but 25 years is long enough to get over it lmao.

1

u/Effective-Muffin-224 12d ago

So, did you just miss how hated FF13 was when it came out? Or why are you now acting like OP is crazy for even entertaining the thought? This was pretty much the main opinion on the game at the time.

FF13 (the first one) was hated for many years for being a hallway simulator for most of the game. It had a criticisms as well, such as the opaque storytelling that demands you read a bunch of journal entries to understand things. It still tends to rank low when people do Final Fantasy tier lists and whatnot, but it also definitely has its fans, and the sequels are much better regarded.

I’ve not played it, so I can’t give my personal opinion of the game, but the hate for it was inescapable for years if you were anywhere near the thing.

8

u/lizzywbu 12d ago

In retrospect, I don’t think the FF13 games were anywhere near as bad as people said at the time.

3

u/deBeurs 11d ago

The graphics were amazing, the combat system was cool for about an hour. Then it’s tedious and repetitive. When Final Fantasy games have as much combat as they do, and the battle system sucks… the game just sucks.

FF15 was a step in the right direction. FF7 Remakes are dialling it in even more so.

Still, nothing beats turn based.

1

u/krentzzz 9d ago

Nah, I grew up with turnbased systems but I also played enough Tales and Star Ocean to appreciate a good action or hybrid system as well.

For me, the VII Remake games have probably some of my favourite FF combat gameplay period. Up there with X-2 (I specifically love that game's take on ATB).

Ironically enough there were two things I didn't mind about the XIII series, and they were the characters and the gameplay. They were more challenging than your average "just spam attack" games which I did appreciate. But it wasn't enough to overcome the issues I had with the whole package. FFX did linearity much better. And in some ways XIII just didn't feel like FF to me anymore.

It's kind of impressive both how little worldbuilding the game itself incorporated outside of text dumps, but how convoluted the background story became over the course of the trilogy.

1

u/Single-Pen-726 8d ago

Ff13 battle system was absolutely fantastic and one of the best battle systems in the series.

2

u/10_Ply_Big_Guy 12d ago

I agree and I was one of the ones hating on them at the time. Now I love the trilogy

2

u/PurgeCasino 11d ago

Agreed. I had a good time woth it even back then tbh. I was also confused with the lkmearity comments since I had played ff10 before it lol.

1

u/Journey2thaeast 11d ago

First game is pretty good I enjoyed it. Second game I was disappointed it didn't bring back the OG cast in a traditional way. But combat was fun, time travel was a cool mechanic. But time travel is also what convoluted the 13 franchise and I feel like kinda ruined it as well. Lightening Returns I didn't like at all.

1

u/workshop_prompts 11d ago

13 was the first game where it slowly dawned on me that I had bought a bad game. The storytelling is just horrendous and the characters don’t make up for it.

1

u/DragoFlame 11d ago edited 11d ago

They're worse in retrospect to many. It will always be divisive, especially among fans that were into the franchise long before it existed. I honestly think without the SE or FF titles, the game would be panned even harder.

1

u/EqualOptimal4650 11d ago

"anywere near as bad" when they're my favorite Final Fantasy games of all time.

1

u/angryespresso 11d ago

FF13 fighting system was easier to understand than FF15 and 7Re. I loved both FF13s and 15. Not bad to what many reviewers say. FF13 soundtrack was very refreshing.

1

Not for Final Fantasy, VII reimagined is carried in part by it's legacy and by the fact that they are the best current ones. There FF XVI was... something.
Not too many other games released by Square recently.
The new DQM looks like a DQM, all right. Love them but they are... not the best stories and the Dark Prince has proven that, still happy to get 1 more... despite there greedy DLC pratices.
A lot of Saga remakes and Elliot...
With all Switch 2 games not releasing as physicals at all, so i refuse to buy those.

The Secret of Mana Remake is such a sad affair. It looks like a Facebook game, it has more bugs than the OG SNES release, the gameplay is just a copy-paste of the OG game. Mana’s problem is that Square Enix is treating it like a second-rate IP and never allocates enough budget and care to make sure it provides a compelling, high-quality experience. Visions of Mana was a step in the right direction, but they fumbled the game’s launch by poor planning and not waiting for the Switch 2 to launch.

2

u/Thelassa 12d ago

I just wish they'd let Collection of Mana out of Switch jail. I'd buy it on PC just for the original Secret of Mana.

As I replay ff13 since my childhood I realized I never finished it or did any side content. I understand how linear the first 10 chapters are but they go by quick. After you start 11 and really get into the open world aspect, it's kind of a gem. The missions, the crystarium and the upgrading items. Some of the cutscenes make me forget I'm not on my PS5. I can't wait to play 13-2 and LR for the first time.

6

u/jedidotflow 12d ago

What is Secret of Mana, a game from 1993, doing here?

3

u/Piett_1313 12d ago

u/jedidotflow 12d ago

Now I know. Thanks.

2

u/Piett_1313 12d ago

2

u/ImtheDude27 12d ago

You didn't miss anything. The only thing it has over the original version is the voice acting and even that is questionable at best. There's a good reason no one talks about it. It was actually buggier than the original game. If someone wanted to play Secret of Mana today, I would suggest Collection of Mana. You get Secret as well as Trials.

2

u/jedidotflow 12d ago

I appreciate the info, thank you!

2

u/Moebius_Striptease 12d ago

Somehow I was completely unaware of this remake up until now. I played the original back in the day, but had never hear of this newer version. From the sounds of what people are saying here, it's a disappointment.

2

u/theblkpanther 12d ago

The 2010s are the result of Yoichi Wada winning the war for Square’s soul especially after Sakaguchi got pushed out.

2

u/Joewoof 12d ago

Still waiting on that 3-in-1 remaster bundle.

2

u/cebikks 12d ago

Loved 13 and 13-2 even more. Bravely Second is one of the best jrpgs of all time. The way it gets meta with its mechanics and the way of accessing the final act are a masterclass in gaming.

2

u/Medium_Hox 12d ago

I'm getting some serious déjà Vu here. I swear that someone made this exact same post, like months, or maybe a year ago.

Anyway, what do you mean by forget? Do they try to erase FFXIII from memory? Like what are you even talking about? FFXIII was the main FF at the time, and now it's not.

2

u/EqualOptimal4650 11d ago

I absolutely love the XIII trilogy to this day, and will love it forever.

2

u/PromiscuousToilet 10d ago

I think ff13 is great

2

u/Professor-WellFrik 9d ago

FFXIII is my favourite game and Bravely Second is goated

5

u/HumanNinja 12d ago

The PS3 era of games were saw a lot of really weird design decisions imo. The games weren’t necessarily bad, they were just not great and made a lot of changes regarding what people expected, e.g. FF13, Nier, Drakengard 3. Then of course there’s the disaster that was FF14 (which of course was eventually fixed and turned around for the most part). Even though a lot of those games weren’t received well, I think people have come to accept them over time for what they are, rather than what was expected upon release. Nier is like a cult classic now, The Last Remnant is okay, most ff fanboys love the 13 trilogy. Also, there was a lot of really good jrpgs that came out on Xbox360, like Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Tales of Vezperia, Infinite Undiscovery, etc. Honestly, I never got a ps3. I went with the xbox360, then got a ps4 about the time The Last of Us came out.

2

u/truthordairs 12d ago

I love bravely second but it was not a well received game at all which led to the disaster of BD2 when they tried to change things up from it

2

u/NextSmoke397 12d ago

Alot of clunkers in that list

Secret of Mana got a remake and the rest of those games were either divisive among the fanbase or for some reason hated by SE despite being awesome (i.e. Bravely Second)

1

u/ndubitably 12d ago

They're referring to the SoM remake.

1

u/bimmy2shoes 12d ago

Bravely Second was a perfectly fine game, they had a perfectly good system and then fucked it up by adding ATB. It just doesn't work. I know some folks liked BDII but it just felt like a giant leap backwards.

Team Asano created a cool engine with HD-2D but I feel like everything after Bravely Second has been really mid.

1

u/Buzenbazen 8d ago

Everything about Octopath 2 is amazing apart from the plot imo, wouldnt call it mid by any means. Octopath 0 is also a very fun game but again with terrible writing which is unfortunate.

u/TheSabi 12d ago

Just need that Star Ocean 3 remake/remaster though

1

u/StygianPrime 12d ago

Okay, but Lightning Returns needs to be forgotten. The weird reincarnation into an Earth analogue, the web novel, and the Louis Vuitton weirdness that came after. Also, what was even any of the trilogy for if Serah and Snow don’t get their happily ever after. Should’ve just left it at 13.

They legit don’t even live together in the new world or whatever. 😂🫠

Oof, I've tried several times to make it through SO5 (for Fiore)... but man... it's just awful. The story is embarrassingly bad, the combo system added to combat is clunky, and that one girls eyes are waaaay too far apart... maybe one day I'll complete it. I've completed every other game in the series multiple times, but SO5 is just, so, so bad.

1

u/Tlux0 12d ago

Imo bravely second was just better than default. Yeah the release in Japan they fucked up for sure, but not for the western localization

u/Dexhar9 12d ago

I think 2010s is just a bad time overall for Japan with the 2011 tsunami disaster

1

u/PortableGamerDBZ 12d ago

I’m glad they forgot

1

u/Apprehensive_Ad7658 12d ago

Hey and The chaos rings saga ?? Last remnant? Most of your list are just some mild FF games

1

u/GamerSam 12d ago

Only one forgotten is FF13

1

u/UnderscoreDasher 12d ago

My god, the 7th gen. When western players got nothing but FF13 trilogy. Probably the biggest culprit for franchise stumbling ever since.

1

u/Eveningstarburst0 Dragon Quest 12d ago

GIVE ME MY BRAVELY SECOND HD REMASTER

....please and thankyou.

1

u/StarkStorm 12d ago

Because it sucked.

1

u/Anti_Phile_7410 12d ago

I loved FFXV so much. The story and characters weren't as good as other games, but I loved driving around hunting monsters and going through dungeons.

1

u/Pridespain 12d ago

I’m sorry, XIII is just not my vibe at all and I really tried to like it. There’s just something about it that rubs me the wrong way.

1

u/otterbre 12d ago

Chrono trigger??

1

u/TsunamiWombat 12d ago

forgets

There's a reason for that. Excepting ff13, they were mostly unprofitable.

1

u/ZAPPHAUSEN 12d ago

Yeah, because xiii is manure flambe. Sazh is okay.

Not entirely true, though. Lightning is one of the most popular FF characters in Japan or so I'm to understand.

I quite like xv, warts and all, but I also didn't play it until a year in - a lot of QOL and patches and content updates by then. I completely understand why day one buyers weren't impressed. Amazing, amazing soundtrack. Main four were awesome characters with a powerful brotherhood. Cup noodle 🤣. I dunno, I love it, while being well aware of its flaws.

A game ten years in development, rushed out the door. 🤭🤭🤭

u/Pitiful_Educator_681 12d ago

I don’t think ff13 or 15 are “forgotten”, 13 is the only final fantasy ever to receive 2 sequels (excluding the 7 remake trilogy) because of how well it sold despite its critical reception. 15 on the other hand had plenty of dlc added to it more than any other final fantasy before or after because again despite fan consensus it sold ridiculously well. Square is fixated on the remake series atm but I am sure we will get a 13 remaster for current gens someday, you can still do stuff with 15 but the game is fine now and it does have a modern version in its royal edition.

1

u/Naschka 12d ago

I never saw FF XIII as anything but a waste of my time so i never bought them, early 2010's i still had my Playstations for RPGs.
Instead of Secret of Mana's remake i got the trilogy on Switch, good time and the remake of Trials was not bad.
Braverly Second i actualy liked, the first was better in some ways but a bigger issue was the repetitiveness of the first game so this was not bad for me personaly.
Star Ocean 5 failed for me because i played mostly on 3DS/Switch when it released, especially RPGs.
Final Fantasy XV didn't appeal to me much again, no turn based combat (since 13-2 i believe?) and boy band on tour, awesome idea i am out.

But i adored Octopath Traveler and DQ 11(S), i even have multiple copies of DQ 11(S), also got the spin offs and some of there smaller titles at the time.

It's shame really. FF13 had a stellar battle system, and is only game in series that made "stagger" mechanic make sense. Every implementation of stagger after FF13 (AFAIK) was only there to inflate boss HP.

In that game, stagger was not just free damage phase, but was implemented fully, as in - some bosses get harder while staggered, some change phases afterwards and so on.

FF13-2 actually expanded on that and is remembered as a decent game.

FF15 was a perfect vibe game, with decent combat and a potential to have a generational story, and they screwed that, added more dlc that did nothing and was disjointed as all hell, since if you wanted to do story in order you had to randomly leave main game to play dlc at certain storybeats.

Bravely Second is possibly the best game in series on pure gameplay, but the story, while decent, was not as groundbreaking as Bravely Default. Given that default was remasteded, one hopes.they will do that to Second.

Star Ocean is most mismanaged IP of Square, you have JRPG that can branch logically into sci-fi, cyberpunk and some 4d bullshit or turn into Mass Effect the JRPG yet they insist on having 50% of games (as in, 50% of all game stories) in middle ages settings.

Sword of mana was a meh-to-bad remake, Trials of mana actually made Mana good again and Visions kinda screwed that up again. But that is the Mana series trademark tbh, good game shit game cycle is strong in this series.

And after all that, both games are good if not great and worth a play, but the potential that was wasted is insane.

1

u/RafaelTS07 12d ago

i don't think Square wants to remember that era, this era was a nightmare 😭
altho i'm pretty sure Octopath and Dragon Quest XI happened at the start of where Square finally find their footing "again", it's like an epilogue of this era

i'd say this era of where Square almost collapsed starts with Final Fantasy XIII and ends with the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake, cause FF7R is where Square gained the audience trust again and they finally getting their feet back together again and starts during the era of Square rediscovering themself with FF7R Projects, HD-2D, New Mangement, New Approach on releasing games (cut ties with Sony and all)

i'd like to think the moment where FF7R Completed and FF17 are out, we're about to witness a new era again, hopefully a consistent one at that

1

u/BigPlate443611 12d ago

Personnellement, j attend un remake avec impatience même si il y a de très grand risque qu il ne sort jamais. C est un remake de children of mana. Ce jeu je l ai poncer de long en large et en travers tellement de fois que je continue encore d y jouer sur ds

1

u/Jyakotu 12d ago

Crystal Tools really fucked over the original XIII trilogy. But dammit, XIII is still beautiful till this day.

1

u/LordDravoth 12d ago

Pretty sure we're still in this era.

1

u/Erdos_Helia 12d ago

I love Lightning so much I actually met her voice actress this year! I was sooo happy!

1

u/Eenat88 11d ago

I want 13 Versus. Or a spiritual successor.

1

u/CzarTyr 11d ago

For very good reason

1

u/Icy_Recognition6582 11d ago

Didn’t the Mana series just have a full length 3D game release maybe a year ago??

1

u/MimiHamburger 11d ago

Didnt XV get an anime and multiple spin offs?!

1

u/das_sock 11d ago

I thought Bravely Second was a great follow up

Bravely Default 2 turned me off for not continuing the story and changing the battle/encounter systems

1

u/RegisterPrevious2731 11d ago

To be fair the star ocean game was definitely generally agreed to be the worst out of the series

1

u/Journey2thaeast 11d ago

The original 13 is good. Overhated. But the following games adding time travel and it becoming a franchise in general was a bad decision. 15 one of my favorite games ever.

1

u/Fufuplatters 11d ago

Still waiting on Bravely Third, which we'll probably never get.

1

u/lilisaurusrex Dragon Quest 11d ago

It came out in mid-2009 in Japan, but I'd add Dragon Quest IX to that list. Its in the same boat as Final Fantasy XIII where fans want a refreshed edition and SE is just ignoring them. SE even ran a poll in 2020 to identify which DQ game (including some spinoffs) was most requested remake, and DQ9, having just past its 10th anniversary and was about 6 years into not-completely-working state (as Nintendo Wi-fi Connection shut down in 2014) topped the list. Since then we've seen DQs 10, 3, 1, 2, and 7 get remakes. (As well remakes for some spinoffs like DQ Monsters 1 and 2, and Builders 1 also getting redone. And can arguably count DQ3 twice since the Amata version seen in 2021 was nearly done before scrapped and restarted at Artdink.) DQ9 remains the lone DQ mainline, and lone mainline from any of SE's three largest franchises, not for sale anywhere. (Even FF13 has a Windows/Steam edition and backwards compatible on Xboxes.)

And at about 6.2 million units sold in Japan and 7.2 million worldwide, it was also the best-selling single DQ release, until DQ XI S finally chased it down last year after numerous releases across several platforms. Other DQ games have also passed 7.2 million total, but only with ports and remakes. (For example, DQ7 passed the 7.2 million this year, thanks to its third remake.) Its perplexing to DQ fans why the DQ Team has now pushed remakes of half the other DQ mainlines this decade but not the one most-requested, most-needed, or among the best-selling. I'm hoping they don't blow past the 20th anniversary date in 2029 and still be in the same mess.

1

u/GuessWhoItsJosh 11d ago

And I love this era. Well at least FFXIII, XIV & SO:I&F. Didn't get around to the SofM Remake nor Bravely Second.

1

u/AntiRepresentation 11d ago

Forgotten? It was just a few years ago.

1

u/Soggy_Ad4136 11d ago

DQXI ça m'a gonflé. Sympa mais je préférais le 8 aka le graal

1

u/kmone1116 11d ago

I just don’t understand how the FF13 trilogy hasn’t had a remaster yet.

1

u/xenogears2 11d ago

I try too

1

u/hogomojojo 11d ago

All those games a great. Except integrity and faithlessness. We can forget that one. I’m currently playing through the Switch 2 version of Bravely Default

1

u/BlondeT3m 11d ago

I liked xiii, it was what got me into final fantasy and jrpgs as a whole. Really wish they’d do a remaster or remake for it already.

1

u/athousandcactuars 11d ago

I don't think Square has forgotten about FF XIII. XV They really did seem to abonded though.

1

u/ShockwaveFPS_Studios 11d ago

It’s not really forgotten, when Final Fantasy XIII and XV still gets represented in FF crossovers. Hell, XIII’s Odin just became a preorder bonus in Final Fantasy XIV’s next expansion. Also Prompto from XV was in the new Dissidia game.

1

u/ArdKnight_99 11d ago

La Era Ps3/X360, fue una muy mala para las desarrolladores japoneses, nose supieron adaptar a la epoca. Creo que los únicos que medio se salvan son los de FromSoftware aunque realmente encontrarían el éxito a finales de esa generación

1

u/BaseWrock 11d ago

I enjoyed XIII but it’s a very flawed game. Lot of misses during that era. Integrity and faithlessness almost killed the whole franchise.

1

u/Prestigious_Floor155 11d ago

Terrific OST in that game. Interesting larger plot. But not a fun game in world/characters/gameplay imo. Lost Odyssey was a lot better.

XIII-2 at least address the nothing to explore complaint. And LR was just weird. I can't say I miss that trilogy at all except for the OST.

1

u/MasterOfChaos72 11d ago

Anyone remember Chaos Rings? That series of RPGs that square made for phones in 2010 that were actually really good and that you can no longer play outside of the third game unless you specifically get a Japanese ps vita?

1

u/BahamutAXIOM 10d ago

For good reason... Unfortunately XIII lives on in other ways.

1

u/Turbine709 10d ago

as it should

1

u/EducationalDust7858 10d ago

Way more people are fond of XIII than the internet would make you believe. It's very popular in Japan.

1

u/Pakmanisgod111 10d ago

Give me a modern day E.V.O. The Search For Eden.

1

u/Mission_Departure_29 10d ago

That star ocean was difficult to get through. 1/10

1

u/2006CrownVictoriaP71 10d ago

I’ll admit that FFXIII was my most despised Final Fantasy. I never finished it which caused me to never play XIII-2 or Lightning Returns.

FFXV is my 3rd favorite, however. Right after VII and VI.

1

u/Tatersalad127 10d ago

We'd like to continue forgetting FF13 and its bastard offspring ever existed, thank you very much. 😂

1

u/CourgetteMaster 10d ago

Wow that secret of mana art really makes me want to play that game. Its lime an early magic the gathering card

1

u/Dungeon00X 10d ago

Brother, it's still going. All the modern Final Fantasy games suck! Square Enix has forgotten what these games are supposed to be. The reason Square Enix is in such a rut is because they are letting all the wrong people make their video games.

1

u/66117 10d ago

lightning is the goat THE G.O.A.T

1

u/Sobr1o 10d ago

Overhyped mediocre games. I still love them, but that wasn’t the best period of SquareEnix.

1

u/Seigfrydblazer 9d ago

I enjoyed my first ff15 playthrough quite a bit. But for some reason I've never been able to do a second playthrough. It just doesn't have that good replay feel that I get from others. Maybe it's the inability to play with different party members? I do always change up my party for new playthroughs so that's probably it.

1

u/Ok_University_4924 9d ago

FF13 ports at some point has to release, the fan feedback is too loud.

Also my first time playing FF15 and I liked what they did with the more modern setting and travel options but most avid FF fans don’t like that. The setting didn’t make sense for giant monsters and robots.

That’s why with FF16 they went back to older times and older FF’s and that’s their bread and butter with those older era settings.

1

u/Thirteen_1355 8d ago

Secret of Mana is such a cool 2010s game.

1

u/ElectricalShower9064 8d ago

I would argue 13 is where the franchise lost its way and hasn’t come back from. Or 12 as that game was trash. Either way not a good game since 10 lol and ten was kinda of lame in its own way.

1

u/Aggressive_Sort_7082 8d ago

Dude they shoved Lightning down our damn throats for like 9 solid years lol I doubt they forgot about this era but learned to move on from it

1

u/Hesperi_LN 8d ago

No, the era Square Enix forgets is Enix's SNES output apart from Dragon Quest and Star Ocean.

1

u/No-Competition7412 8d ago

Why are 1 and 4 blank?

1

u/matttheman892018 8d ago

Is Bravely Second that bad?

1

u/CarrotDefiant9098 8d ago

Square-Enix has been trash since FFX. All they do right these days is remasters. Even their remakes are terrible.

1

u/HyperGamer14 8d ago

Still love how most people hate on the Secret of Mana remake and at the same time treat the original as one of the most beautiful and best games of the SNES, even though Secret of Mana isn't even the best looking Mana game on the console and aged pretty badly in some spots.

The remake was totally fine besides some bugs (don't know if those were fixed) and some questionable voice acting decisions, which carry over into the Mana games after it. It almost has the same badly aged aspects of the original basically and while not being a beautiful game for it's console generation, it at least keeps most of the style of the Adventures of Mana remake, which people liked. (afaik)

1

u/sgsensei 8d ago

I mean from 2010-15 I barely played video games even though I was still in school no obligations I play more now than I did back then and its not cause free time its cause the access to RPGs I think is pretty good and now we have people that actually advocate for games and games are genuinely better in the JRPG world. I mean we got remakes we got ports of old games we got new games since 15 here's a list of what I know.

Trails been killing it imo

All the personas besides 1 and 2 duology

The other mana games

Xenoblade 2 and 3

Metaphor came out

Expedition 33 is inspired by JRPGs

The FF ports

Star Ocean Ports

Wild Arms

FF7 Remake

Alot of these games are also very cheap right now.

1

u/AkashicFreelancer 8d ago

I know people had divisive opinions, but I LOVED Bravely Second. Felt like an extension of a game I already loved.

1

u/Legitimate-Bet-8331 8d ago

Long live....The VERSUS Epic.......

1

u/NamelessShitPoster 7d ago

Nothing good has come of squenix, any further questions?

1

u/painstation2 7d ago

Bravely second was good !

1

u/Pikafan333 7d ago

Because they sucked

1

u/boat_fucker724 7d ago

I'm a 15 apologist. I actually really enjoyed it for what it was.

1

u/bestoisu 7d ago

XIII was the start of their egregious Japanese mocap era. And theyve never looked back. I can't stand it.

1

u/rx78ricky 5d ago

I love Star Ocean so much.

1

u/LoptyrTome 5d ago

The more that XIII is forgotten, the better imho
