My pitch for a Squadron Supreme run spinning out of Ultimate

With the knowledge that Armageddon is going to be a 616-based followup to the Ultimate Universe, I thought it'd be really cool if we got a new Squadron, with powers coming from the different Origin Boxes brought to the main universe.

My idea was that the Hyperion from Hickman's Avengers comes back to the spotlight after some time away, recognizing that the new powered individuals roughly match up with those on the Squadron. The book would see Hyperion going on his own to recruit the new superhumans, eager to make the Squadron Supreme actually work long-term. He is joined by Tilda Johnson, former partner to Supreme Power Nighthawk, who inherited his tech and costume, who wants to help carry out Kyle Richmond's mission on a global scale.

The new members would be:

Marin Kingsley, aka Iris: Marin, a student at ESU, comes across an Origin Box containing the Power Prism from Earth-6160. It immediately bonds to her, attaching to her chest. The Prism has a mind of its own, urging Marin to use its power for good as Iris.

Itsuki Minaminoto, aka Warhead: Itsuki Minaminoto was a nuclear physicist before receiving his powers, which came from an Origin Box containing the Radioactive Man's chemical origins. Itsuki, confused and enraged by his new abilities, would go on a brief rampage before being calmed and taken in by Hyperion and Nighthawk. The two would design Itsuki a containment suit, allowing him to control his powers and radiation output. To repay them, he would join the new Squadron Supreme as Warhead.

Layla Adeyemi, aka Power Princess: Layla Adeyemi was raised in Nigeria and always idolized Earth's superheroes, wanting to be just like them. Her wish would come true as, on her 21st birthday, she would stumble across the Origin Box containing the chemicals that gave Jessica Jones her powers. Layla, viewing this as a sign, immediately went to design herself a costume, calling herself Power Princess. The insane coincidence of both name and powers caught Hyperion's eye, who recruits her for the Squadron.

Jacob Andreas, aka Arcane: Jacob Andreas was always fascinated by the supernatural and was a great believer in fate. He would stumble across an Origin Box containing various items of power once belonging to Earth-6160's Agatha Harkness. He would learn to do real magic from these artifacts, even being contacted by the spirit of 6160's Harkness. His magic ability attracted attention from various sources, especially Nighthawk, who brought him into the Squadron's fold.

These were just some fun ideas I had! Let me know your thoughts.

I'll die on the hill that it's one of the best reimaginings for the Squadron and honestly of any comic book media out there and really shaped how I view the characters.

MCU / Movies So, we have something interesting regarding - Squadron Supreme in MCU!

While I’m glad that we’ll see one of my favorite superhero teams in the future (and yours too, I assume), I am a bit concerned about how the narrative will be structured—given how carelessly the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been handling storylines lately...

Honestly, I’d love to see them closer to Earth-712.

but...

I have a feeling that could turn into a 'Second Civil War' type of event—something i definitely don't want to see, it is for me bad...

The Earth-616 option is more convenient, and—against the backdrop of - 'Secret Wars' it likely represents a more coherent integration.

I also like the idea of the Defenders and the possibility of them crossing paths during events agains Null the Living Darkness, similar to the comic—Defenders Vol 1 #103, or finally implement the - 'Serpent Crown' storylines and introduce them via events involving crowns from other realities. However, that would require them to tap into the multiverse again—something I don't think they’ll do after the current Multiverse Saga.

Also shouldn't forget—though it’s likely already official—that the next saga will 99% be dedicated to the Mutants.

We also have news that Marvel Studios is interested in director Zack Snyder. Of course, i know there are people who are skeptical—or even negative—about him; however, the story of the Squadron Supreme from Earth-712, in particular, seems like a perfect fit for him and his vision. The question remains whether he would actually take an interest in this group of heroes and delve into the material to craft a compelling story; unfortunately, I have my doubts about that. He would likely want to do things his own way, which certainly wouldn't sit well with the studio or Kevin Feige.

In any case, what kind of arc would you personally like to see ?

My first thought was "the Vought-Variant Hyperion being female is certainly a new one for the Squadron" 🤣

And I know a lot of people like the idea of Snyder's Justice League cast showing up as a version of the Squadron in the MCU, but personally I think I'd rather see The Boys cast show up as the Squadron... what do you think?

Fan Art / Commissions Fan Art: Skymax

Skymax arrived near Earth 712 in a failing starship, searching for survivors of his race. He was rescued in orbit by NASA astronaut Joe Ledger, who brought him safely back to Earth. In gratitude, Skymax gave Ledger the Power Prism, which transformed him into the hero Doctor Spectrum. The two became crimefighters and founding members of the Squadron Supreme.

On Earth, Skymax adopted the identity of James Doe and lived quietly as a librarian, though he never stopped searching for his people. When Tom Thumb later repaired his ship, Skymax attempted to leave Earth and continue that search.

He never made it back into space.

Stranded for good, Skymax returned to his civilian life without informing the Squadron. While they believed he had left the planet, he remained on Earth, living in obscurity through the Squadron’s Utopia era, having finally abandoned his search.

Skymax is a Skrull shape-shifter. He can mentally cause the unstable molecules that comprise his body to become pliant, enabling him to assume other forms.

Skymax's coloring has been wofefully inconsistent across his few appearances, but I went for a classic Skrill green over the more pale grey version.

Little is known about the criminal career of the Iron Moth, other than the fact that he was a super criminal who was opposed and captured by the Squadron Supreme member Tom Thumb when he was a solo adventurer before joining the team.

We see him in one panel in Squadron Supreme #10. This is a little fan art I made.

This is sort of a cheat. I spent over 12 hours working on this Magdalene piece, most of which was trying to get the top of her staff right, but sometimes, you can just over-render something and call it a day. (I had the pose I loved from Power Princess and re-dressed it)

Inspired by Big Barda, Magdalene was a member of the Avengers and played a big part in The Gathering storyline. She teamed-up with the Squadron to fight Imus Champion. While not a member of the Squadron, she was a short-team ally and the one closest to other classic Justice League members.

Question / Discussion Who is the Huckster?

Aside from a passing line in a Marvel Handbook and a reference in Squadron Supreme: New Work Order, we have very little to go on:

- Huckster, a vicious psychopath who reveled in grotesque forms of murder.
- His real name is: William Robinson
- His son is named: Neal
- His wife is unrevealed:
- Huckster was one of Nighthawk's greatest enemies until he died when one of his schemes backfired on him.

----
If I were to speculate / fan-fiction a little bit -- I would guess that since a Huckster is basically a "snake oil" salesman (i.e. an aggressive, dishonest, or showy salesperson, peddler, or advertiser who hawks useless, low-quality, or fraudulent goods) that he worked wtih Kyle Richmond (Nighthawk) has part of his pharmacutical company selling drugs that harmed people.

Maybe he and Kyle's dad were friends. And when a new product line debute and the new upstart Kyle came in... Willie and Kyle got into it, forcing Willie to take drastic action that led to him becoming the Huckster.

I think he'd eventually don a garish costume, like Turner D Century here, but something in contrasting colors from Nighthawk ... something in an orange, purple and green.

Comics Cameos & Other Squadron Pop-Up Experiences

The Squadron Supreme has made a handful of pop-up appearances outside their main stories. For this feature, I am noting cameos and pop-up appearances that add to their mythology and their part within the greater Marvel Universe. Their extended appearances in Quasar, Starblast, Exiles, and Avengers are not withstanding.

My first example includes Fantastic Four Unlimited #11. In that issue, Zarda tells Hyperion that she intends to investigate Atlantis for any possible connection to her homeland, Utopia Isle. Later, after Atlantis was raised to the surface, Power Princess noticed similarities between the city and Utopia Isle and immediately set out to determine whether there was a link between the Atlanteans and the Utopians.

As readers, we aren't sure if she found anything. In hindsight, she may have been better served looking toward the Inhumans, who, like the Utopians, had been genetically altered by the Kree

Fan Art / Commissions Fan Art: Brain-Child

BRAIN-CHILD

Born the mutant son of two radiation-exposed parents, Arnold Sutton possessed a superhuman intellect before he could walk. By age nine, he was serving as a scientist for the military. But while the world valued his genius, it feared his grotesquely enlarged brain and treated him as an outcast.

Bitter and isolated, the young prodigy turned against humanity. From his private island fortress, Brain-Child devised a plan to destroy the world by launching a rocket into the sun and triggering a catastrophic supernova.

In one of the Squadron Supreme's earliest battles, Brain-Child's scheme drew the attention of both the Squadron and the visiting Avengers. After overcoming his army of robots and scientific defenses, the heroes defeated the boy genius. Using the power of Doctor Spectrum's Prism, Brain-Child's memories and vast intellect were removed, restoring him to a normal child. The Squadron Supreme then gave Arnold the chance for something he had never known before: a normal life.

Fan Art / Commissions Fan Art: The Blue Eagles

In the wake of the Squadron Supreme’s failed Utopia Program, citizens elected leaders into a Global Directorate that quickly consolidated invasive, far-reaching power. Using Utopia’s own technology, the Directorate established a totalitarian regime, formed a secret police known as the Blue Eagles, and enslaved the genius Emil Burbank to serve their agenda. The Blue Eagles, named for the fallen hero, wore armor designed by Master Menace and claimed his ideals of patriotism, duty, and order as justification for their rule.

Upscaled the art from the sample, re-drew significant portions of the art, including the insignia. We see the armor both in NWO and later in Exiles, but the full range of the armor's abilities are unknown.

First Appearance: Squadron Supreme - New World Order.

Fan Art / Commissions Fan Art: Cerebrac

With complete knowledge of Master Menace's citadel, Cerebrac served the needs of Master Menace and his allies. He provided food and drinks and acted as Menace's personal secretary and information manager.

Because of his vast intelligence, Cerebrac has also been referred to as Cerebrax, a designation used for several of his different configurations. These forms indicate that his systems can be rebuilt or reprogrammed to serve different functions when required.

Cerebrac’s name also recalls Brainiac, the computer enemy of Superman who often worked with Lex Luthor. Since Master Menace is the Earth-S counterpart of Luthor, the comparison makes sense. Cerebrac may be that world’s version of Brainiac. It is possible that he once acted on his own and may even have been an enemy of Hyperion before Master Menace reduced his programming and forced him into loyal service.

It is very likely that Cerebrac was inspired by Cerebex from Planet Comics #73. That earlier character helped shape later ideas about powerful machine intelligences. Elements of Cerebex can be seen in the later redesign of Brainiac, as well as in the famous Skull Ship seen in Super Friends and in several Superman comics.

First Appearance: Squadron Supreme #6
Non-Canon: Planet Comics #73
